Octavia Spencer Wins Best Supporting Actress Oscar

Octavia Spencer Oscar

LYNN ELBER   02/26/12 10:42 PM ET  AP

LOS ANGELES — Octavia Spencer inspired her formidable character in "The Help," but the actress turned into a softy Sunday as she accepted an Oscar for the role.

"Oh, thank you," a tearful Spencer said as many in the audience rose to their feet. She expressed gratitude to her family, her colleagues from "The Help" and her native "state of Alabama" as she received the best supporting actress trophy.

The actress played tart-tongued maid Minny Jackson in the movie, which depicted Southern life as the 1960s civil rights movement unfolded. The film is based on Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel "The Help," and the author drew on her friendship with Spencer in creating Minny.

The two were introduced by a mutual pal, "The Help" writer-director Tate Taylor.

After playing a nurse in the film "A Time to Kill," Spencer was cast as a nurse in several different TV series including "City of Angels" and "Chicago Hope," and played the same medical role in films including "Halloween II" and "Seven Pounds."

Spencer, 39, who was favored to win the Oscar, was composed enough to enjoy the company of Christian Bale, who presented the award to her.

"Thank you, academy, for putting me with the hottest guy in the room," she said.

She also thanked Steven Spielberg for "changing my life." Spielberg's DreamWorks is the studio behind "The Help."

Spencer is one of just a half-dozen black actresses to have won an Oscar in the awards' 84-year history. In the supporting actress category, Hattie McDaniel won for "Gone with the Wind," Whoopi Goldberg for "Ghost," Jennifer Hudson for "Dreamgirls," and Mo'Nique for "Precious," while Halle Berry won best actress for "Monster's Ball."

Congratulations Ms. Spencer on your award. I just wish you would have gotten it for something else, other than for playing a aunt Jemima role.

I am a 50+ white man. I want myself and the generations (after me in my family) to be part of the solution not the problem. I am aware that the author is White and was not even born until 1969. With that knowledge, I understand that the movie can not give the true story from a Black perspective. What I thought I could do is watch the movie with my oldest Grandson. While watching, I would emphasize that while this movie shows some of the ugly face of racial ignorance perpetuated by Whites in our country; it does not go far enough to show the true ugliness that transpired for 500+ years. I could also print out some of the stories written by the people who endured those ocupations durring that time. Like the woman who pointed out that she had to sleep over night in the kids room, not even given the chance to sleep with her own babies at night. My point is, by itself the movie is not a very good tool for awarness however, combined with the written historical facts and other movies such as Rosewood and The Long Walk Home it could be used to cultivate awarness in younger generations.I just feel the way to heal is through education and I am educated enough to know that the healing will not be completed in my lifetime. That is why I must use what is provided to educte the younger generations in my family.

If more people thought the way you do, we'd be much further along in this process than where we are now. F&F.

So happy for her. She seemed genuinely surprised. I think she could have quite a film future if given good roles and scripts. Wished Viola had won one though.

I am glad Octavia won, although compared to Viola Davis, she is pretty tame and boring.

This is all part of the system to divide and cause fighting. There is no winner if you do not own part of the film. The film made over $100,000,000 and Octavia pocketed less than $450,000. Oscar cannot send your kids to college, winning an Oscar does not carry the same weight for some

Congrats to Miss Spencer! But to BV/Huff where is this story?! 1st black DIRECTOR to win an Oscar. Congrats to Mr Martin and P. Diddy!

@Taking home best documentary was the film “Undefeated,” executive produced by Diddy, about a high school football team from Memphis, Tennesee that undergoes the struggles of life in a rough Memphis area.

The film marks the first time an African American director has won an Academy Award.

Overcome with excitement director T.J. Martin accepted the award

Although it was painful to see how subservient Black women had been toward Whites to earn an income Ms. Octavia Spencer played her role very well. Congratulations!

Does anybody see a pattern with the best supporting black actresses? All of them are oversized....what's with that?

I guess history repeats itself ... oftentimes, large, strong black women were the best supporters. Trust me, I know!

Why bring up Halle Berry? She did Monsters ball. What does it profit a woman to gain a statue and lose your soul? The black community as a whole lost mad respect for her because of that movie.

I understand people gotta work but damn.. A Black women gets an award for playing a maid.. Did any White actors ever get any award for playing a slave trader or slave owner? At some point as whole it just seems people are playing with the intelligence of the masses.. Now let's wait and see what kind of roles she gets now.

So last year the Academy was criticized for a lack of black nominees and then this year a black actor is awarded an Oscar for mediocrity. Coincidence? She is this year's Cuba Gooding Jr.

No loss in protesting what a movie stands for while supporting the skills of those who starred in it. The point is looking deeper than the surface to the impact of symbolism where black people are portrayed in films watched by the world. We haven't overcome yet. Despite having a black president (we've had one before believe it or not) or blacks in power positions (we've had those too when they were still lynching us) or making lots of money (Black Wall Street was filled with wealthy blacks before they burnt it down, as was Rosewood FLA) we are losing ground. ONE black actress winning, out dozens of "return to the days of white elitism" films, her role extolling the virtues of servitude in the hey dey of white aristocracy in the deep south where thousands of black people were lynched and oppression was brutal (Jackson Mississippi? Really?) is the point. If you don't get that it is YOUR loss!

That's how I feel. She's a talented actress, but let's face it, Hollywood loves to reward black people for taking on these kinds of roles.

Octavia - Maid
Denzel - Thug corrupt cop
Halle - Sex on film
Cuba Gooding - Buffoon.

Yep. Too bad most people don't have the memory god gave a billy goat. Then maybe they would stop being happy about maintaining the stereotype Hattie Mcdaniel was dealing with almost a 100 years ago. Octavia is being used for her features. Her eyes especially.

I was truly hoping she would.
She was amazing in the film...and I doubt anyone else could have worked the role quite the way she did.

You rule, Lady!
