Putin Protesters Form Human Chain Enveloping Central Moscow

Putin Protests

LYNN BERRY   02/26/12 10:27 AM ET  AP

MOSCOW — Thousands of protesters held hands to form a 16-kilometer (10-mile) human chain encircling central Moscow on Sunday to keep up the pressure on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as he prepares to extend his rule for six more years.

Putin, who was Russia's president from 2000 to 2008, is running for a third, now six-year term in a March 4 election. He is expected to win easily against four Kremlin-approved challengers, but an unprecedented wave of protests has undermined his image as a strong leader who rules with broad public support.

Sunday's protest appeared to have drawn close to the 34,000 people that opposition activists estimated were needed to complete the chain along the Garden Ring, a wide road that makes a loop around the city center. Almost all of the people standing in the wet snow wore the white ribbons that have become a symbol of the peaceful anti-Putin protest movement.

Young Putin supporters also were out on sections of the Garden Ring on Sunday. Wearing heart-shaped red signs around their necks that said "Putin loves everyone," they handed out similar ribbons in imitation of the protesters. Some passers-by refused to take the pro-Putin ribbons, which had stripes of white, blue and red like the national flag.

The Garden Ring was the scene of protests on two previous Sundays, when hundreds of people drove cars decorated with white ribbons and balloons as others waved from the sidewalks and overpasses as they went by, horns blaring.

These demonstrations have helped the protest movement maintain momentum between the huge rallies in Moscow that have drawn tens of thousands of people.

The protests began in December following a parliamentary election that saw widespread vote rigging to boost the results for Putin's party. Many Russians were already steaming over Putin's announcement in September that he and President Dmitry Medvedev intended to swap jobs. The presidential election was presented as a formality.

No longer willing to tolerate Putin's system of "managed democracy," the protesters have demanded fair elections in which opposition candidates are free to take part. Some protesters have called for Putin to step down.

Participants in Sunday's demonstration held up white signs in the shape of a car's license plate that said, "We'll drive out Putin." The number on the plate was 04 03 12, the date of the election.

After the demonstration ended, about 1,000 of the activists moved to a square near the Kremlin where festivities were underway for Maslenitsa, or Butter Week. The holiday, similar to Carnival in the West, precedes Lent in the Orthodox Christian calendar and ushers out the winter.

"We believe that Russia will not withstand six more years of political winter," opposition leader Sergei Udaltsov said. "Everything will freeze completely. Therefore, we have to do everything we can to prevent that."

The protest ended with the activists releasing bunches of white balloons.

Hmmm... 16 kilometers chain - that is about 16000 people. And the chain was broken in many places.
Anyway , that is almost an order of magnitude less than 130,000 pro Putin's rally.
The reality is that Putin alreday won elections by a landslide (~65% vs 15% of closest opponent)
thanks to akward 'diplomacy' of US state Department

Nonsense. We don't any more publicity stuns in U.S? As if we don't have enough already.

What we need is viable oppositional organizations with talented and charismatic leaders; long term strategy; solid theoretical and intellectual foundation; reach out programs and reliable funding.

Not bunch of college students putting up tents, pretending they're cool anarchists and partying all night to show up Da Man.

In Russia this word brings up extremely unpleasant associations.

The power is always with the people. When large numbers of the public get angry and become organized, totalitarian rulers hear the wake up all.

Shame on Putin.

"When large numbers of the public get angry..."

When a percentage of Russians will get angry Putin will lose his power, indeed.
But since majority of Russians clearly support him and his party, things will remain as they are.
Although overstaying his welcome somewhat, Putin remains the best leader Russia had in many a century.

Russia doesn't need any more rabble-rousing demagogues. It had enough of that, thank you.

But it IS desperate for efficient administrators, and sober-minded managers of nation's economy, culture and military.

I spent two years working in Russia. There are plenty of "sober-minded" people. That is until around 11-11:30 am when the first vodka toast is made - typically to celebrate making it to 11:00 am without vodka.

This particular article doesn't look to me as propaganda. Simple description of events.
And this site doesn't have such impact neither on general US pubic nor Washington policy- makers. So I think it little over edge to accuse HP in such big mission :-)

That said, this definitely not US government business to meddle too much in Russia's affairs. As long as Putin do not resort to actual repressions - at this point he handles it in much more civilized manner than "bat'ka" Lukashenko - US government should probably limit itself with general statements calling for free and open elections. That's it.

Regarding "majority of Russians like him and want him back in the presidency". You and me know very well that it's not out of clear choice and love for Putin, but rather because of lack of real alternative. Most of Russians despise party of "crooks and thieves" that he established ans rules; as well as corruption that he and his cronies friends setup in Russia and that pulls entire country back and doesn't let it develop and grow beyond being oil/gas/natural resources supplier. Russians just don't want another revolution and repetition of 90s. But this doesn't mean that Putin is good for Russia. He probably was in 90s (when he allegedly stabilized things - when in reality the decisive factor was sharp increase in oil prices), but like in many cases in history - once positive force at some point become reactive and even oppressive if stays too

Should US media stop publish news about world now? ;-)
Use your critical thinking and other alternative resources - even those you listed - to get broader perspective. Just don't blindly believe other sources too - just because they are not from US ;-)
After all, Putin himself created this enormous corruption machine in Russia; he himself removed many democratic tools and institutions - like cancelling elections for governors (and replacing it with his appointees); or suppression of free TV (there is really no free uncensored serious TV channels in Russia), and so on.

Keep praying that oil prices will continue to rise. Only this will allow Russia to "getting stronger and more prosperous under Putin" :-)
And drop this anti-Western Mother Russia philosophy - it doesn't help neither you to understand how rest of the world works nor helps Russia to become a super-power and take position that it deserves among other large countries.

Until the video of Putin in the prisoners dock becomes a reality nothing will change. He's a throwback to preGorbachev and Yeltsin. He's a dinosaur, a relic. He should take his buddy Assad and they can occupy a museum shelf.

Back to reality:
Putin is the most competent and successful administrator Russia has ever had. During his administration Russia achieved unprecedented levels of personal prosperity and freedom unmatched by ANY other period in Russia history.
The improvement is particularly startling given the catastrophes and sheer negligence demonstrated during Yeltsin regime.

This is what I have understood as well. Putin had to step down to the position of Prime Minister, because he could not hold more than two terms consecutively. But, I think it is a good thing that Russians are able to freely engage in peaceful protest, an activity which was not afforded them during the Cold War years.

That video is a joke and is actually from the trial of Khodorkovski. I wish that all of those oligarchs go through the same process. Putin is quickly restoring Russia to its former glory. At least in the Soviet days we had some stability in the world. After it was dismantled under Gorbachev and Yeltsin there has been an unprecedented period of unabated western aggression.

Two great enemies are becoming more and more alike as the people start to rise up against their governments and demand their congress give them an honest government. It is time that people prove they are more powerful than those who are supposed to serve them and that no amount of media spin is going to stop them. To save the world both the American and Russian people have to retake their countries and put honest government back in. For russians this will be a first but we have been remiss in letting our government slip away from us. A precious gift from our forefathers we lost by letting the government ignore the Consititution and the Bill of Rights.

In the USA the OWS movement is more about certain self-serving individuals wanting everyone else to subsidize them and their interests than anything else. Not sure what the major complaint against Putin is over there in Russia.

Major complain in Russia is to stop corruption that got to enormous measures and "built-in" in every aspect of people's lives. Not only on the top.
It also created extremely inefficient government - where every project costs 3-4-5 times more than it should because most of it goes to bureaucrats in forms of kickbacks and bribes. And this corruption pulls Russia back - doesn't allow it to developed and grow beyond being oil/gas supplier.
The problem is that Putin himself and his cronies created it. All his friends became billioners within couple years. He created United Russia party (now called "party of crooks and thieves" after one oppositioner called them this way and it went viral) - which membership in many cases can be bought as it gives the "member" connections and allows a "member" to get bribes and participate in kickbacks.
And since this corruption starts form the top, it made sure that "the top" cannot be prosecuted - so the Law system is under heavy control of government as well.

So you see the problem? Putin cannot let go of the power - because if he does, he will be prosecuted by the leadership that will come after him.

The demands of the opposition in Russia are quite absurd. Most of them are relatively wealthy people. How bad could the situation really be when they don those white ribbons on new, foreign made cars? I have seen some Mercedes and Bentley's with those white ribbons. The whole of opposition is really laughable. Some tabloid hacked the phone of one of their leaders and overheard some unimaginable trash talk. Almost all of it was directed at fellow opposition figures. The most funny phrase was Boris Nemtson calling the masses of opposition "Cowardly penguins and internet hamsters" They are brave lions on the forums, writing all sorts of garbage about the government and the ruling party, but when they come out on the streets they are deathly afraid to end up under the baton of the police. Luckily for them, the government and the police is being extremely tolerant of such nonsense.
