Rick Santorum Secret Service Protection: GOP Candidate Getting Security Tuesday

MILNER, Ga. -- Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is expected to get Secret Service protection Tuesday, according to an administration official with knowledge of the plan.

The campaign of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich requested Secret Service protection last week and is awaiting word on whether he will receive the security, a person close to the campaign said Sunday.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive security matters.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has received the protection since Feb. 1. Secret Service protection is given to each major party's presidential nominee but can be provided earlier if the Homeland Security Department approves a campaign's request.

Businessman Herman Cain received Secret Service protection last November but dropped out of the race in December.

Federal law allows candidates to seek protection if they meet a series of standards, including public prominence as measured by polls and fundraising.

Who is paying for this? These people hold no public office so why should taxpayer money be spent on them? If they or the GOP party want to pay the taxpayers back fine, give it to them, if not let them pay out of their pockets. Or hire private security.

There is so much hatred and intolerance for people not like us, who have differing views today. I am scared for our country. I give Rick Santorum a lot of credit for speaking his mind even if it is not politically correct. I trust a man willing to be courageous enough to do so knowing he will be mocked, ridiculed and persecuted. I think he is a strong, masculine and Godly man and I wish there were more just like him. He deserves protection, just as much as anyone - let's not discriminate!

I know a televangelists who travels with an armed guard which I find interesting. A poor, black person can become an instant millionaire if you send him money but God won't protect the televangelist unless he has a big, brawny guy carrying heat by his side? Odd.

There is so much hatred and intolerance for differing views today. I am scared for our country. Personally, I admire Rick Santorum for speaking his mind weather it is politically correct or not. He is a good man and he is being persecuted for it.
