Shailene Woodley Is Studying To Be An Herbalist: Things We Learned On The 2012 Oscars Red Carpet

First Posted: 02/26/2012 7:14 pm Updated: 02/26/2012 11:00 pm

Everyone needs a backup plan -- even Golden Globe nominated actresses.

On the red carpet at the 2012 Oscars this evening we learned that "The Descendants" star Shailene Woodley is studying to be an herbalist, and it's apparently something the 20-year-old actress is passionate about.

In November the actress, who also stars on "The Secret Life of The American Teenager," told the FABLife:

“If I wasn’t acting, I'd be either studying massage therapy or probably in the woods with some random group trying to survive in the wild, and I’m not kidding, just to see if I could do it. Or going to herbalism school."

It sounds as if she followed through on her passion -- but we weren't the only ones surprised to learn she was taking herbalism classes. Comedian Kathy Griffin tweeted:

Shailene may not have been nominated for an Oscar tonight, but she certainly wins the award for most unexpected hobby.

She was the best thing about "The Descendants"

Why would you care if Shailene has other interests and aspirations? She was a sick teenager. She's beautiful and interesting. BTW, George Clooney would not have been nominated if he didnt have her incredible performance to play off. She and the younger sister totally made that movie.

Love your enthusiasm but let's not get carried away, that was Clooney's performance as the actor and narrator that made the film, all 34 films in 28 years worth. The young ladies were wonderful in their first turn save the elder's Red Carpet interview...eeegad, epic fail. ("friggin stoked"?)

I can't believe she said stoked and fricken' on camera. She should learn how to present herself a little better while being interviewed.

Love Meryl Streep. Great actress. She plays strong character parts. Was rooting for the young woman from the Help too. Well, maybe next time. All in all, it was too long, with much ado about nada.

I guess that when the movies suck and the acting is not that good this year we get all this stuff about who wore what and who they are doing. If the Oscars were truly about excellence in acting this is not the year. It is almost as hyped as the Super Bowl and much less interesting.

So what she going to do? Grow pot?
08:47 AM on 02/27/2012
She was a sick teenager and maybe is looking for alternatives to traditional medicine.

After herbology she will enroll in potions followed by spells and curses.

learn grammar "an herbalist" try "a herbalist"
10:26 PM on 02/26/2012
Actually, that's incorrect. If a word starts with a vowel sound, even if it does not begin with a vowel, you use "an". Therefore, it would be "an herbalist" not "a herbalist".
10:24 AM on 02/27/2012
regardless, she wrote AM herbalist.
10:39 AM on 02/27/2012
My friend is correct. When a noun begins with a consonant, you use "a" as in "I have a car, a pencil, a ball" etc, and when it begins with a vowel, you use "an", I have an Ipad, I live in an Igloo, I have an apple" etc, so she is in fact a herbalist. To be fair, this one carries an exception, if you pronounce it the English way, with a strong "H", then " she is a herbalist, sounds proper, Americans say it mostly with a silent "H", so she is an Herbalist
