Oatmeal isn't the only heart-friendly breakfast: Enjoying one grapefruit a day can help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol levels by 15.5 percent and triglycerides by 27 percent, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Deep red varieties pack the biggest punch because they have higher levels of antioxidants, says Shela Gorinstein, Ph.D., the lead researcher in the study. Grapefruit does increase the potency of some prescription drugs, so check with your doc before you dig in.

Incredible as it may seem my tropical country does not grow or import grapefruit. We never have the chance to get it.

I'm surprised the warning about checking with one's doctor first isn't stronger. Grapefruit - even in small amounts - while taking some cholesterol drugs is dangerous. I had a terrible experience some years ago with it and a statin.

Why would you be taking cholesterol medication in the first place? Just eat right and don't listen to anyone who tells you that high cholesterol is bad and needs to be controlled by medicine

Check with your doctor before you dig into a grapefruit?
Are you kidding me?
I say any medication that makes you eat less fruits should not be taken. Eat more grapefruit and perhaps you won't be needing those medications after all.

Sorry but what you said is such a blanked statment. So you are suggesting that people not take cholesterol meds, anti depressants, and anxiety medication, fibromyalgia meds and eat a freaking grapefruit. There are plenty of other healthy fruits and citrus fruits that can be supplemented. You my friend obviously do not have chronic pain. Believe me if I could eat a damn grapefruit and make my fibromyalgia and anxiety go away I'd eat them by the boat load. Not happening in this lifetime. I eat extremely healthy foods but there are also other foods that interact with medications and vitamin supplements so before you make a statement like that for all of us maybe you should do a little homework. Just a thought. Have a good day.

Yes, that's exactly what I am saying.
The body was not made to function with medication. It is not real food. If you focus on eating real food you wouldn't have to worry about cholesterol and I repeat any medication that requires to cut out ANY food that was designed for your body (fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, vegetables) is not good for human consumption.

Most diseases are caused by improper eating habits.
Why in the name of peace would anyone take medication for depression. This too shall pass my friend, you don't need pills to feel better, and as for cholesterol, that's another fake alarm. Cholesterol does not kill, it;s the altered food that we eat that cause ill health. How many years have we heard to limit egg yolks -- really. Eggs are very good for you yolk AND white cholesterol and all.
Medication for anxiety? Why ? why? why? Just take a deep breath and relax geesh.
Grapefruit is a great fruit -- eat it!
