Movimiento Hispano, Alliance Of Hispanic Groups, Aims To Register 200,000 New Latino Voters

On the tails of TIME Magazine's controversial cover that predicts Latinos will decide the 2012 election, three Latino advocacy groups are determined to make the prediction a reality by registering 200,000 new Latino voters in 24 states before November.

The Hispanic Federation, the Labor Council for Latin America Advancement (LCLAA) and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), announced in a press conference a coalition project called Movimiento Hispano (or Hispanic Movement, in English). The initiative is to be "a nonpartisan, culturally competent virtual tool that will guide citizens on how to register to vote and engage civically online."

Their hopes to register new voters are in part spurred by the "incendiary rhetoric of the Republicans and conservative groups against legalizing undocumented immigrants," according to a report by Fox News Latino.

Hector Sanchez, the executive director of LCLAA, one of the partner organizations, called the "extremist rhetoric" of some GOP candidates "unacceptable."

"With the community under attack, the vote is one of our best weapons of defense," Sanchez said to Fox News Latino.

The author of TIME Magazine's recent cover story, Michael Sherer, thinks Latinos could determine the results of the November election because of rapid population growth in certain key states. He argues that new voters in the Southwest are largely Latino, and that if Obama is able to win "heavily-Latino Western states like Nevada, Colorado and Arizona," he would be able to afford losing industrial Midwestern states like Ohio and Wisconsin.

The Movimento Hispano website offers resources aimed to increase Latino engagement such as convenient polling places, general voting information, and printable voter registration forms.

Maria Teresa Kumar, executive director and co-founder of Voto Latino, said in a blog for HuffPost LatinoVoices that the "growing influence" of Latino voters is finally starting to "spook a lot of politicians who have neglected the Latino community."

"There's never been a more pivotal moment for Latinos to flex our collective power, and move our community and our country forward," she writes.

Yes but will they have to show a photo ID?
I thought most poor or elderly or minorities didn't have a photo ID and that was why requiring one to vote was sooooo unfair.

Station one ICE agent outside each voting station and that will negate this voter drive.

As long as these hispanics are legal, kudos for them. But there should be absolutely no illegal ever allowed to vote. Kick the illegals out of our country immediately, they are a growing cancer. I am done supporting them and Mexico. Going to claim 12million dependants on my tax return this year. Also people talk about economic benefit to the US. Where is that economic benefit most of the illegals send the money to family in Mexico to be spent there just like corporations send profits out of the US, mexicans send wages paid to them to Mexico. Time for a tax on transfers to mexico.

Wow. That is 8,333 per state. That should scare no one. Unless they register the same people over and over again like ACORN did.

Ah yes ~ but there are 11.2 million illegals in the USA, unauthorized to work in the USA.

But are, working in the USA

How?

Identity theft I.D.s ~ everyday way of life for 11.2 million fugitives from ICE

Same identity theft I.D.s to obtain work in the USA ~ Same identity theft I.D.s to register to vote AND vote

You just made the best argument for CIR which includes a bio-metric card for every legal migrant to identify themselves with, which is something e-verify fails to do.
Thanks!

67% of Hispanics voted for Obama last time. Everyone of them knows it is the Tpublicants holding up EVERTHING, jobs, education, fixing the economy, healthcare and even immigration reform.

Tpublicants have said so themselves, their number 1 priority was to make all of Obama's Ideas fail so they have used the filibuster, to make that happen, more times then any other time in the history of the United States of America. They even used it when they supported the same ideas Obama did. Now they will reap what they have sown. No Hispanic will vote for them unless he hates himself.

Correct, 67 percent voted for Obama last time, when only McCain had a long history of very strong support for immigration reform.

The question is - what took these people so long to register? I've voted in every election since I turned 18 as do many Americans. Why are vast swaths of "Latino" Americans so indolent?

Well to be honest 40% Anglos don't vote. This group (40%) of voters typically just don't vote.

60% of the registered Latino voters, voted in the last Presidential election. Hopefully this registration drive will increase Latino participation.

This election and others across the country will be decided by Latinos . The largest voting block in America . Latinos are very hard working and work long hours to bring produce to our tables . The way the repubs have treated Latinos shows that they do not need this huge voting block .

"latinos bring produce to our tables"?
seriously?
Nothing like promoting a stereo-type.
Oh, BTW, this "La Tino" gets his "produce" from Whole Foods and the farmers' market from Laotian IMMIGRANTS who came here legally!

Per Article ~

"Hector Sanchez, the executive director of LCLAA, one of the partner organizations, called the "extremist rhetoric" of some GOP candidates "unacceptable."

So ~ Hector, finds it acceptable for the Democrats & BHO to forceably deport criminal illegals at the rate of 1 illegal each & every 79 seconds in his 37-month presidency?
12:44 AM on 02/28/2012

I certainly hope they decide to increase that number with all of the voter suppression the GOTP governors have been quietly putting in place.
I understand there could be five million votes in jeopardy this time because of it.

Please cite source of your asserted "voter suppression"

Because ~ there are no convictions of "voter suppression" Eric Holder's DOJ does not enforce voter suppression violations

A group with a spanish name is trying to register 200,000 new voters?

And people wonder why we need voter ID laws?
07:54 PM on 02/27/2012
People have to show an ID when they register to vote. What's the difference when they show the ID....they'd be showing it in their own neighborhood when they vote.

So, what's your point? (Besides fear of "the other")
07:56 PM on 02/27/2012
Ah, throwing the r.ace card already, huh?

In a lot of states you can register by mail or internet. You're supposed to go to the elections office and show some ID at some point but that's not enforced in blue states. There's no reason not to require ID.

Also generally not required to vote either.

Next thing you know, people from states with Spanish names will be trying to vote, you know, like Nevada, Florida, Colorado, Montana. (I won't count California, because that was the name of a mythical place in a chivalric romance, and not a real Spanish word. Likewise, Arizona Texas, New Mexico and Utah are Spanish-ized words from indigenous languages,)

But many do have places with Spanish names...

Yep, a vast conspiracy 400 years in the making.

Imagine what will happen if Obama is re-elected?

He will do his best to grant amnesty by executive fiat. Even if unlawful.

More civil unrest and disruption. Chaos.

Well, of course, this has always been the plan for taking over America and remaking it into the Northern United States of Mexico. Go to YouTube and search for "The Reconquista Movement" and you will understand all of this...completely. Then add groups like LaRaza to the mix and actually America as it and always has been is pretty much doomed. One needs to ask the profoundly important question about these people: WHY do they want to take over America? That's the ONLY question that need be asked about this article. And, more importantly, why does much of the media, including HuffPo, apparently endorse these people and their plans to Mexicanize America? The Mexicans know that the only way to accomplish this transition is through political force and by out breeding we Anglos and blacks. They are smart because they realize there are ways other than military force to subdue an enemy. And, for many of these Mexicans, every thing that ever was and will be "American"...that is their enemy. Oh it will take them a few years to do this. I hope I am long gone.

What the Mexican Nationalists fail to realize is their overpopulation and invasive activities will be all for naught, and will only hasten their own slavery.

Their efforts at invasion will lead to civil unrest within the US with the result that the People's Republic will 'have no choice' but provide a 'police action' to restore order between the warring factions that will also include militant Muslims.

Of course the Chinese have prior experience with limiting over population as well as civil rights.

If the Mexicans are lucky, they will be allowed to troop off back home. Worse case, they will lose Mexico to Chinese domination as well. The Chinese will need their natural resources, including oil

"One needs to ask the profoundly important question about these people: WHY do they want to take over America?"

Because they have made a great big mess out of their own country, now they have come here to loot the US. You and I both know that they are not here because they love the US or the American way of life. They don't even like the place and they despise US citizens (unless one of 'their kind'). This is no secret.
What other country on earth would even CONSIDER granting amnesty to millions of openly hostile people? This is what just amazes me. They do not even attempt to hide the fact that they are only here for what they can get and have no intention of assimilating - ever, yet I am supposed to feel sorry for them? Or feel like I owe them something? I was trapped in downtown Chicago during the May 2006 amnesty march. Since then, there has never been any doubt in my mind as to their intentions.

I am a fourth generaion American-Chicano from South Texas. One ot those who did not cross the border, the border crossed us. This is my country so, we have not made a mess of any country much less our own. We have fought in every war and have worked extremely hard to make our country great. We are not going anywhere. Speaking from personal knowledge and experience, most Hispanics that do come from other countries love America and cannot learn English fast enough. They know that English is primary to getting ahead. They are no different than the Poles, Italians, Germans, Norwegians, or any other ethnic American that are equally proud of their heritage. So, you may continue to watchingfox news, or promote insulting English-only laws, or, promote spanish language ads to sell products to Hispanics, but you gotta stop pulling "facts" out of your butt!
