Rick Santorum Quotes & Controversial Remarks Draw Fire (PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 02/27/2012 10:29 am   Updated: 02/27/2012 11:19 am

Rick Santorum's fiery rhetoric and willingness to engage on social issues have endeared him to conservative voters.

Running at the front of the pack; however, has also brought more scrutiny to some of the GOP hopeful's statements.

Reuters reports:

Though he is giving Republican rival Mitt Romney a run for his money in the nomination race, Santorum's language might be an obstacle if he wins his party's nomination to challenge Obama in the November 6 election.

"As a frontrunner you have to watch exactly what you say," said Donna Robinson Devine, professor of government at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. "The attention has moved to Santorum, but to me he seems very whiny. I just can't imagine him as president."

Below, a slideshow of some of Santorum's most controversial remarks:

Satan And America

"Satan has his sights on the United States of America," Rick Santorum claimed in a 2008 speech. "This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country - the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age? There is no one else to go after other than the United States and that has been the case now for almost 200 years, once America's preeminence was sown by our great Founding Fathers."

Santorum has since defended the speech, telling CNN, "I'm a person of faith. I believe in good and evil. I think if somehow or another because you're a person of faith you believe in good and evil is a disqualifier for president, we're going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president."

This man has no business being the POTUS. He represents a limited group and ONLY that limited group. The president should represent the best interests of as many Americans as possible which doesn't seem possible as he alienates too many people. He divides America as the religious Republicans have been so good at for the past 30 years.

Are you trying to tell us something, Ricky? Are you willing to submit to a scalp check so voting Americans can see that you have no '666' branded there?

What can one expect from a religion that advocate genocide?

Nahum 1:2-8 - Natural Disasters are God's Wrath
Deuteronomy 17:12 - Kill People Who Don't Listen to Priests
Exodus 22:19 - Death to Followers of Other Religions
Deuteronomy 13:13-19 - Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God
Exodus 31:12-15 - Kill People for Working on the Sabbath
Zephaniah 1:7:18 - God's slaughter fest
Zephaniah 1:2-6 - Kill Everyone

Intelligence and common sense are not at all related.. Mr. Santorum may have several degrees but he learned very little about life. He is a cog in a huge machine...his religious convictions have tainted everything he says and does. Perhaps that is not bad if you are not running to become the candidate for your party for president of the United States.
Mr. Santorum says some of the dumbest things...I only hope he seriously does not believe what he says.

The scary thing is at Santorum is not a dumb man, he is very well educated and has 3 degrees unlike the the half governer. He is an educated man and still thinks this way, that is freighting.

Santorum making "inflammatory" remarks isn't news. Many of his remarks are inflammatory. He doesn't seem to know or care how many people he offends and insults. He seems to be very judgmental and hard-hearted.

All Ricky needs to have the picture complete is a uniform and a little tiny mustache. Then a straight armed salute and an armband with a funny cross on it. This guy is very, very scary and we must do EVERYTHING to keep him from becoming president.

It's interesting that Rick chose to take on JFK's speech as vomitatious. JFK was a Catholic who was reassuring the electorate that his faith would not intrude on his ability to govern those of all faiths. Or no faith. He would not make his policy decisions by faith - but by reason and conscience of what was best for all.

Rick? That idea makes him want to throw up.

For anyone to expect Santorum to meke any policy decisions by "reason and conscience" is too much to expect of him. He's not capable of reason and has no conscience ... to speak of anyway.

I view him as a person in the clutches of a very public personal meltdown.

You can't run on negativity and anger as your platform, as Rick does. Well - you can - but you will lose. Americans are sick of the bad news, they want to hear positive messages. Rick is about as far away from a positive message than any human could ever be.

He has now qualified for his own religion. Santorumism, a religion so high and mighty and singularly dogmatic that his has only one member. Seriously, he has blasted every other religion, including the Pope's. Anybody on here that think he or she would "mearsure up?" I sure wouldn't.

We have a president who is a man of faith and believes in good and evil. Mr. Santorum, I regret to inform you that that is not the problem.
