'Smash' Stars Megan Hilty And Katharine McPhee Talk Uma Thurman, Future Musical Numbers And More

Smash Katharine Mcphee Megan Hilty

First Posted: 02/27/2012 11:00 pm Updated: 02/27/2012 11:10 pm

"Smash" has found its Marilyn Monroe in Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty), and Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) is well on her way to taking the stage as part of her first Broadway ensemble. So, what's next on "Smash"? Drama, guest stars and lots of songs.

On the docket: "Shake It Out," a Florence and the Machine cover McPhee said she enjoyed doing, "Rose's Turn," "Our Day Will Come" and in episode five, "Let's Be Bad," an original song that Hilty described as "epic."

"It can be kind of confusing because I'm Megan playing Ivy Lynn who is playing Marilyn who is playing Sugar in 'Some Like It Hot' and she's wasted so she's messing up the whole number," Hilty told HuffPost TV from the set. "But she's still kind of fantastic in some moments."

The "Some Like It Hot" number, which has been seen in some commercials, is a focal point of the episode. "The number just builds and builds and builds and builds until the end and everybody -- even the audience -- is exhausted," Hilty said with a laugh.

Just because Ivy has the part doesn't mean her romance with director Derek (Jack Davenport) will come crashing to a halt.

"It's not just a one-time thing to get a job; it's a real relationship, albeit a strange one, a very unconventional one," Hilty said. "But that's what makes it so interesting: They're two characters that find this thing that kind of works for them, but it's dangerous at the same time."

Davenport said while Derek and Ivy are legitimately into each other, they do have their own underlying motivations.

"We jokingly refer to each other as Mr. and Mrs. MacBeth," Davenport said. "It's been really good and really interesting because I think one of the things that is handled very well -- and very unflinchingly and unapologetically, I suppose -- is they're both very ambitious people and they're quite tactical. Whilst they're undeniably attracted to each other, they also have other agendas which they don't necessarily have to spend all night discussing, but they're not idiots."

Over on Team Karen, the small town girl seems to be getting awfully cozy with Ivy's friends, especially after that killer Adele cover, and McPhee says that will continue.

"I still remain friends with them. It's an interesting thing," McPhee said. "It's kind of like just how things happen when you're in a show with people: You become really close to them. You kind of never know if you'll even talk to each other when the show is over, but for the moment, you're really kind of close to each other."

McPhee said Bobby (Wesley Taylor), Jessica (Savannah Wise) and Sue (Jenny Laroche) are caught between Ivy and Karen, balancing friendships amidst tension.

"They're always trying to defend one or the other or play both sides because Ivy for a period of time is the star so you have to be good with the star and they all feel bad for me," she said. "They kind of become cheerleaders for me along the way. Nothing dramatic happens between all of them as of yet."

Aside from the ongoing Ivy/Karen drama, a new force to be reckoned with is coming to town: Uma Thurman. The "Kill Bill" star will appear in five episodes -- starting in episode 10 -- as Rebecca Duvall.

"[Thurman] plays a difficult Hollywood star who may or may not get involved in the 'Marilyn' musical," the executive producer of "Smash," Neil Meron, said on set. When pressed for details, Meron was tight-lipped, but said Thurman is "going to give a hell of a performance."

"Smash" is already well into wrapping its 15-episode first season, but that didn't keep McPhee and Hilty from naming dream guest stars.

"I'm a big fan of the funny," Hilty said. "I would die to have Will Ferrell, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig -- anybody who has those chops. Do any of them sing? I'm sure they do. Even if they don't, bring them on."

Meanwhile, McPhee had another type of guest star in mind.

"Some young, hunky guy to come in maybe the second or third season to have a really quick moment with," she said. "Whether it's a dream sequence or not, but I just get to make out with him. Maybe Ryan Gosling. RYAN GOSLING! That's who it is!"

This show has momentum; I really think it can pull it off. There's a really good take on the show here. http://theairspace.net/filmtv/smash-brings-audiences-back-to-broadway/

I want to like this show. I like the director, hate Angelica, think the script is so cliched and heavy handed I find myself yelling at the TV. My wife keeps telling me to settle down. I mean one minute the cast is dissing the dark haired marilyn, next she's bitching one girl out and the next minute there all in her apt taking her through initiation. Huston looks ridiculous throwing drinks in her husbands face. Do something with her or her character quick! Debra Glessing seams capable but either she's not or her script is so awful and her direction stinks. I like her asst producer gay guy a lot but come on give him a chance to be a believalbe guy. Other then that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play? I'm good for one more week. Pat

SMASH is my new guilty pleasure this season. Love the music and crazy cast of characters. It's not rocket science but fun to watch. I'm excited to see Katharine McPhee in a breakout role on TV. Met her during her American Idol days and she's such a sweet person! Very beautiful and love her voice. Also a big Debra Messing fan. I hope SMASH will be a success and stick around for a long time. The upcoming guest stars are going to be great!

I've given this a go...but it's starting to drag badly. It's a good idea but it gets tied up in silly things and has way too many story lines to cover in an 1hr show.

I'd rather they follow the two young Marilyn actresses stories and let them sing more than follow Angelica Huston for example. They writers go off on tedious story lines for her and it does nothing for the show but slow it down to a crawl.

My thoughts exactly. I loved the first episode, but ever since, the show has become stagnant. Enough of the romance between Megan and the annoying Brit. I also don't see where they are going with Katharine's boyfriend. There is way too many story-lines and everything has just ground to a halt. I will give this show one more week to win me over for good or I am going back to Castle on ABC on Monday nights.

I agree. I am getting tired of it and keep hoping something will pop but it drags. Maybe I'm too use to HBO shows. I rent all of their series and I think I'm just spoiled completely by the incredible writing, acting. etc. "Boardwalk Empire" is fabulous and I'm watching that now.

So, I won't be watching Smash any longer. I can do something better with my time. I hate commercials so the Network shows have to be good for me to stick around. BTW, I was once a Castle freak! I loved that show and the interplay between Castle and Kate. I haven't seen in this year tho.

The only show I never miss is, "The Big Bang". It's the funniest show on network TV that I've ever seen. The writing is lst class. Sheldon the character, will be hard to top in the future of sitcoms on the networks.

I tried watching this again based on the posts. I'm sorry folks, but this show is just awful! The dialogue is sappy and the music is still just so-so. It's not anywhere as good I had hoped it would be. I'll stick with Glee.

The only way I can see Karen getting the part of Marilyn is if Ivy didn't use a morning after pill and the director didn't use a condom and Ivy gets pregnant and is threatened with losing her shape, unless 'Smash" is daring enough to have her go for an abortion.

I have a feeling Ellis is eventually going to overplay his hand. He' thinks he's smarter than these Broadway ites. Big mistake.

I absolutely love this show ... finally, something other than a cop or reality show!
01:38 AM on 02/29/2012
Perhaps its the way her role is being wrote but Megan Hilty is smutty and dirty in this role. I imagine the other girl will eventually get the role of Marilyn since Megan's character slept with the director to get it. Megan's character walks around like she is playing the part of Marilyn Monroe all the time, even when she's not rehearsing, it's creepy.

"Megan's character walks around like she is playing the part of Marilyn Monroe all the time, even when she's not rehearsing, it's creepy."

That's what some actors really do and even after a show closes the character they play is still with them. I remember Judy Davis saying it was very hard to relive herself of Judy Garland after playing her in the TV movie: "Me and My Shadows".

Ivy slutty? She has sex outside of marriage and looks hot and slept with the director. Big deal. Her character is professional enough to know that a director of a major Broadway production isn't about to giive someone the lead role just because he sleeps with her.

Love this show and I look forward to it every week. Love the acting and it's cast really well. I think EVERYONE does a great job and are so talented. I don't know why people diss this show. It's intriguing and so well done.

I completely agree. As far as the dissing goes, this has become a forum for people to just complain, complain, complain (conservatives) ... and that's why you will rarely see me posting in Entertainment.

it's a miracle. I thought there was going to be another eye-roll list coming our way but I guess one-liners don't count as review after all. so this guy can write complete sentences. good.

I agree. Those "eye roll" recaps make me want to scream. Thanks Chris for writing something worthwhile for the fans. I hope the ratings hold up and SMASH is renewed. I love the campy show and the whole cast. (except Ellis) I have also enjoyed Katharine McPhee's performance on the show. I think she provides the much needed "pop" element to SMASH because not everyone is going to love all Broadway show tunes. Variety is the key to more mass appeal. Ivy certainly has the powerful Broadway pipes and she's great - but Karen is very versatile and can sing any genre. That attracts the younger fans. It's a nice balance and I believe that's her purpose. I think she's doing a good job in her first major acting role. Of course, Megan/Ivy is a seasoned actress and performer on Broadway. People can't expect Katharine to be her equal but I think she's holding her own. Loved the Mambo dance number in Episode 2! Can't wait for next Monday!

Yes, variety is a must to attract a wide range of viewers. i like both Karen and Ivy for different reasons. They are both very talented. Smash is my favorite new show this season. Love the cast, the music and the drama of musical theater.

i was looking forward to this show, but Katharine is a terrible actress. she is a bore and although she sings great, her acting is not good. i understand that the part is for someone new to the theatre, but her whole demeanor is boring. i watched each episode but not sure will continue with the series. we'll see how next week goes. i am hoping she gets better, i loved her on American Idol

She doesn't have to be a great actress for this role but has to be a terrific singer and she is. Her character is an ingenue. She fits the part just fine.

When did a reasoned critique become hate? Save powerful words for when they really apply.
