Alabama Immigration Law Opponents Plan More Pressure On Auto Manufacturers

Alabama Immigration Law Hyundai Honda

Civil rights groups plan to increase pressure on automakers that have plants in Alabama in an effort to stop the state's contested immigration law, a member of the coalition told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

As civil rights groups fight Alabama House Bill 56, considered the most extreme bill in the U.S. aimed at driving out undocumented immigrants, they are seeking help from foreign corporations such as Hyundai, Honda and Mercedes-Benz, all of which have plants in the state.

Hyundai, at least, appears to have noticed. An executive sent a letter last week to dealerships warning of protests by immigrant rights groups, including a hotline set up with information about picketing or other activity.

"We understand that protests are very stressful," Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America executive vice president of sales, wrote to dealerships. "If any activity occurs surrounding your dealership, please make every effort to remain calm. Do not confront the protesters, and instruct your employees not to do so either. Although it is difficult, try to continue business as usual to the maximum extent possible."

A group of advocacy organizations -- including the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the NAACP, the National Council of La Raza, the United Auto Workers and the Southern Poverty Law Center -- requested meetings earlier this month with the chief operating officers of Honda, Hyundai and Daimler AG, which owns Mercedes-Benz.

So far, no meetings have been scheduled, and only Hyundai has officially responded. Still, the groups plan to continue pressing the automakers to join their cause, citing the possible financial implications statewide of keeping the law in place. They may go to Seoul during a Hyundai stakeholders meeting next month, a coalition member said.

The law has cost the state up to $11 billion, according to a cost-benefit analysis by University of Alabama economist Samuel Addy released earlier this month.

Zuchowski noted the company's importance to the Alabama economy in his letter, but did not acknowledge that the law could hurt the company. Hyundai created more than 34,000 "full-time equivalent jobs statewide and in 2010 generated a total impact of $3.8 billion to the state’s economy, accounting for 2 percent of its Real Gross Domestic Product," he wrote.

To advocates, that is exactly the reason why Hyundai is being targeted. But the company, among others, has elected to mostly stay away from the issue, even after foreign executives from Honda and Mercedes-Benz were arrested under the bill last year.

"Specific to the issue behind the prospective demonstrations, Hyundai believes that the coalition’s efforts would be best directed toward the Alabama Legislature, which enacted and has the power to amend H.B. 56," Zuchowski wrote. "Hyundai questions why we would be targeted with such activity, as we have a long-standing commitment to civil and human rights."

Hyundai did not respond to a request for comment, but confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that the letter was authentic. Mercedes-Benz and Honda did not respond to requests for comment.

Despite protests and a federal lawsuit, Republicans in the state have said it may be tweaked, but will not be repealed. The law allows government workers, including police, to ask about immigration status during most interactions, which has caused some undocumented immigrants to pull their children from school or be denied water. Although some provisions of the law were blocked in October, others remain intact.

Immigrant rights advocates say they will not rest until the law is completely blocked or repealed.

"You can't tweak bigotry, you can't tweak hatred," Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership. "That's really the bottom line."

I am in agreement with many of the comments. I'm all for immigration, as long as its legal. These folks are "undocumented", "illegal" immigrants coming into this country. The key word here is illegal. That means you're breaking the law! It amazes me how many people are protesting this law. Come here through the legal channels and you shouldn't have any immigration problems. I'm glad the unemployment rate has dropped since this law was passed. Makes you think! "Charity begins at home and spreads abroad". Take care of the Americans who were born here who need jobs.

Okay, here's the deal. I am an American citizen.

I have lived in Latin America, Canada, Europe and the United Arab Emirates for personal, educational and professional reasons.

In all of these places, it was very evident that they all had laws forbidding ILLEGAL entry.

In a couple of places, ANYONE found to be in the country illegally was ARRESTED, DETAINED, escorted to the border or put back on a plane to wherever they came from. In some places you could be imprisoned and BEATEN or maybe just "disappeared". Their name, photo and fingerprints was entered into a nation-wide data base and NEVER, did it occur to me to accuse the particular country of racism, bigotry or exclusion.

The problem in the US, is that there is an increasing vocal gaggle of ILLEGAL apologists who want to collapse the cultural mainframe of the US as we know it up to know...English-speaking, Constitutionally regulated, Law-abiding democracy where LEGAL immigration is welcome.

Are we perfect? NO!
Are we loved around the world? NO!
Are we the best show in town? YES!

So everyday, we are subjected to listening to these ILLEGAL duck-speaking, goose-stepping clowns who will be the 1st ones to complain when the roof that was just installed on their gated mansion, by an ant hill of ILLEGALS starts to leak on their silk pajamas.

Seriously now!

Consider the backlash against these automobile companies if they did indeed come out on behalf of illegals over citizens.

A report last month said 80,000 jobs opened up after the bill was passed. I think the bill is doing a great job,I would love to see the increase of jobs in construction and landscaping.

Flaws in Dr. Addy’s Study (http://cber.cba.ua.edu/New%20AL%20Immigration%20Law%20-%20Costs%20and%20Benefits.pdf ) Continued….
6) Dr. Addy included illegal alien construction workers (making over $47k/year) in his study. He estimated that 40.9% of the illegal workers were in this category (page 7). Yet another job that an American will not do (snark).

The farmers COULD have hired legal labor at legal market rates. They also could have LEGALLY hired unlimited H-2A workers. Instead they chose to hire illegally. I hope that they suffered from a poor (& illegal) business decision.

The referenced study ($11B Cost to Alabama) by Dr. Addy (Ph.D in Mineral Economics), has some serious flaws. Did the author actually read the study? http://www.businessweek.com/top-news/alabamas-immigration-law-could-cost-billions-annually-02142012.html
Interesting points:
1) Dr. Addy’s study completely blows off the educational costs for the illegal alien’s kids. Interesting since it is one of the largest individual costs ($12k/yr/child in K-12) for illegal immigration.
2) He frequently refers to the “productivity” of illegal labor. This is code for “works hard for below legal labor rates”.
3) His study assumes that jobs left by illegal labor will simply DISAPPEAR and not be filled by either current legal residents or legal H-2A workers.
4) The article also linked to an article on “Why Americans Won’t Do Dirty Jobs”. It was interesting since the main point was that employers did not want to pay a legal market wage.
5) The “Dirty Jobs” article provided the story of the illegal alien picking tomatoes for $0.08/lb, who expected to make $60/day. He had 3 kids. Their K-12 total educational costs will be approximately $36k/year. Since he makes less than $22k/year, how could he possibly pay enough in taxes to cover the educational costs?

The automakers with plants in Alabama are all based outside the US. When people from headquarters visit these plants, they have to come into the country through legal means.

I support some of the points these protesters make, but I doubt they'll find support with Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. The Koreans and Germans aren't big on rule-breaking.

The Honda executive got a ticket for driving without a driver's licence, but wasn't detained since he had his identification and visa with him. He had left his driver's license at his hotel. He took his license to traffic court and got the ticket dismissed. Same thing happens to thousands of Americans every day. The German executive left both his identification, visa and driver license at his motel. He was detained while one of his coworkers when to the motel and return with the indentification and driver's license. Not the sort of stuff you would shut down an auto plant over. Americans driving in Japan and Germany are required to have driver's licenses anf visas.

What's the point of picketing employers? Is the pro-illegal crowd implying these employers need slave-like labor? This is an act of desperation.

Seems like if they disrupt business, the companies can get police out there to break it up.
