CNN Launches In Depth Series On Rising Gas Prices

CNN Tackles Rising Gas Prices

CNN kicked off its newest In Depth series about the rising price of gas on Monday.

Mark Whitaker, the managing editor of CNN, introduced the series in a column on Monday. "In fact, probably no fact of our daily economic life is as universally felt and poorly understood as gas prices," he wrote. "That's why we at CNN have decided to devote our latest series of In Depth reports to sorting out what's behind the sticker shock at the pump and how it could become a factor in this year's presidential election."

On Tuesday's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien," chief business correspondent Ali Velshi attributed the high prices to the rising cost of oil and continued buying by speculators. "Anybody who says they have a short-term solution to gas just lying to you," he said.

Other highlights of the series will include a report about what goes into buying and selling oil on "The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer," and Erin Burnett's look at the global market for oil, along with other coverage on "CNN Newsroom" and online throughout the week.

This piece originally said that the series launched on Tuesday. It launched on Monday.
