Katniss Barbie: Mattel Releasing New 'Hunger Games' Doll

Katniss Barbie

We've seen the nail polish, the fake eyelashes, the t-shirts, the jewelry, the action figures, and just about everything else Katniss-related that's been released recently, but the latest in a long line of Hunger Games merchandise caught us a little off guard. The newest must-have for HG fans is -- drumroll, please -- a Katniss Everdeen Barbie doll!

Mattel will be releasing a Barbie of everyone's favorite fierce female this April, according to EntertainmentEarth.com. The announcement has spurred both excitement and raised eyebrows, and critics have been quick to point out that the strong character of Katniss seems out of line with all that Barbie represents. Crushable said: "It’s hard to imagine little kids reenacting the bloody combat of the Hunger Games in Barbie’s Malibu dream house."

Few details have been released so far -- we know that she'll be wearing one of Katniss's signature outfits, but which one remains a mystery. However, we do know that Barbie lovers and/or Katniss fans can pre-order the doll for $28.

In other recent Hunger Games news, Jennifer Lawence gushed in an interview about being a huge fan of Kristen Stewart, who she was originally up against for the role of Bella. Plus, a surprisingly awesome video featuring an audio dub of the Hunger Games trailer over action from The Vampire Diaries sweeps the Internet.

What do you think of the new Katniss Barbie? Would you buy one? Tell us in the comments below or tweet @HuffPostTeen!

A Barbie that is strong and can think? Ya, I can see why that's big change in their marketing strategy.

We are very excited about the upcoming release of Katniss Barbie and have had a great response from our customers. There are no images as of yet, but we should be seeing them in the near future.

I would love to see a Barbie of Katniss. My only question is how. How could they make a doll of her when the majority of the books is bloody and violent?
Most people who own Barbies are children are they not? How can that traslate well?

I guess that it remains to be seen and I can't want to see her.

What? Wait...what? I nearly fell out of my seat laughing. Some how, this feels a bit...er, ironic?

I'm not sure what many of you think the Barbie "image" is -- go on www.barbiecollector.com and the "Showcase" that shows you the history of the barbies that have been released over the past years. They have had PIRATE Barbie, Barbies representing the ARMY and MARINES (etc.). They've had HARLEY DAVIDSON BIKER Barbies. They've had Barbie as WONDER WOMAN and BATGIRL. There was a Barbie astronaut DECADES ago. They've had Barbie as FBI Agent Dana Scully from the X-Files. I don't see ANY conflict with making a Katniss Barbie. Barbie may have great clothes but she actually can be a BADASS too.

I'd buy a Katniss Barbie before I bought a Bella Barbie.

Omg, I'm right there with you. I can't stand Bella but I sure do love Katniss.

I will buy it for me as a collector but girls under 10 who still like Barbie are not reading the Hunger Games. For teens/adults who have read the book, I am not sure they would buy the Barbie.

Odd

Why doesn't Mattel consider a request giving the general public a "bald Barbie" for kids that have lost their hair from Chemo and other diseases that cause hair loss. (Last year, Mattel created a one-of-a-kind bald Barbie doll for a 4-year-old suffering from cancer who lost her hair during chemotherapy treatment, according to CBS New York. Now, some want Mattel to make bald Barbies available to all their customers.) I WONDER just how many requested that Mattel make a Katniss Barbie??? And God forbid a Kardashian Barbie!!!

KATNISS IS NOT BLONDE! >____<

She looks too preppy to be on a Survival Game Show.

Congrats Mattel. A much better choice than the Kardashians. This could help take Barbie in a whole new direction!
