Michigan Primary 2012 Results: Election Reporting By County (MAP, REAL-TIME DATA)

The Michigan GOP primary has shaped up to be a significant battle just one week before Super Tuesday.

The contest could prove to be an outstanding upset for Rick Santorum, who had been gaining support amongst conservatives, but lost ground in the polls this past week. However, prior to the primary, even the latest polls had Santorum in a dead heat with Mitt Romney.

(UPDATE: Romney wins Michigan and Arizona. Scroll down for full maps and results.)

Michigan could be a good indicator of how the Republican candidates would fare in the Midwest in the general election, according to the Boston Globe, as the ability to woo blue-collar voters in swing states will be tested. A loss for Romney, who was born in Detroit, could be a big blow to his chances for winning the GOP nomination and would raise questions about his ability to defeat President Barack Obama in November.

Arizona, which Romney won, held its primary simultaneously with Michigan. For the GOP, Arizona is an all-or-nothing battle, with 29 delegates up for grabs. Grand Canyon State Gov. Jan Brewer (R) endorsed Romney this past weekend.

For full coverage of the Arizona and Michigan primaries, be sure to check out our liveblog. You can also see real-time results of the contests as they come in, district-by-district, below.

This just in:
Ave price of gas nationwide $3.73. Energy Dept secretary Stephen Chu just said the obama administration is NOT working to do something about bring the price down. Instead, he says their focus is to continue pushing the green energy agenda. Saw it on FOX NEWS. Don't believe it? If you only watch the lib news you'll probably never hear that.
ECONOMY
JOBS
GAS
Three issues obama has no plan nor answers. If so, where does he hide them? He better make a major turnaround on his policies or he is gone in Nov. Right now he is in bad shape in the polls on all 3 of those issues. I know, the truth hurts libs, but reality will bite you in the rear this Nov if he doesn't.

Production is up/ demand is down/ exports are up. Whatcha gonna do? Build a pipeline to deliver oil to Texas? Like Texas doesn't have enough oil? Right, they need to export more from Houston. Try building a pipeline to New England where winters are cold or to the west coast so the Californians can get theirs.

This is a good site for tracking the primaries. 1,144 delegates are needed to win the nomination. 22 states have primaries or caucuses in March. http://www.2012presidentialelectionnews.com/2012-republican-primary-schedule/

Big congratulations should have gone to Ron Paul. Doubled his vote total from previous primary, almost...while Romney actually got fewer votes and same percentage. One message gaining steam, another just plain tired. KEEP THAT HATE MAIL COMING! Thoughts at 3 A.M. http://thoughtsatthreeam.blogspot.com/?spref=tw

What the heck is this lady talking about? Pay no attention to that woman behind the curtain, she doesn't know a Ron Paul supporter from a hole in the ground.

Exit polls indicate that close to one out of two Republican primaries voter thinks that the most important thing is to defeat Obama. Truth is that they want to defeat a fictional Obama, an Obama who supposedly:
- raised taxes (he lowered them)
- ruined the economy (it was already ruined when he got elected)
- created the deficit (he inherited a deficit and increased it while trying and probably succeeded in helping the economy via a stimulus package)
- is anti-christian Muslim, pro-Islam, and pro-terrorists (Bin Laden might disagree here)
- isn't even American, and so on.

Their real motivation is that they will never accept a black President but don't want to say this publicly. So, they avidly support ANY reason to hate Obama and disregard truth of facts. Facts have a liberal bias anyway.

That is your basic highly motivated GOP voter for 2012.It's just a fact and they will probably not have a George Wallace, Strom Thurmond or Lee Atwater moment, even on their deathbeds.
12:21 PM on 02/29/2012
He is not black. Your argument and attempt to make it about race rather than performance doesn't work. Black is Black. Michelle is black and she does a fine job as first lady. Mr. O is as much white as he is black, so get off the "race" soap box. He is just doing a bad job.

PS It has been three years now. No more blaming the previous administration. He has had ample time and opportunity to make changes. He had the congress and senate for the first two years. He chose health care over: immigration, gay marriage, taxes, etc.. need I go on?

President Barack Obama, when filling out his census questionnaire in 2010, listed himself as BLACK. As to blaming the previous administration. That is perfectly valid since they made the mess and the Repubs in congress have done nothing to help solved the problem plus Repubs are still talking about the Reagan Presidency which proves looking back is valid.

Appx 10 million live in Michigan, 1 million voted in this primary. So even if only 50% vote in the general election, that means appx 4 million will vote for our president, ok good.
12:26 PM on 02/29/2012
Liberal math! Don't you just love it. This is why we need a change. Address the failing educational agenda so you libs can add and get social study classes. That way you can understand the "primary" process and remember that it is not the general election.

PS remember that 10 per cent of the vote was by Dems.

Actually it is you who need the Math lesson.

If 1 Million voted and ten percent as you say were Democrat approx 100k then if you get a fifty percent turnout Democrats will win by 75% to 25% as the polls indicate.

One of the hugest landslides in History!

I found it interesting that Ron Paul's percentages were higher in the more Democratic counties of Michigan. Not sure what that means, but interesting.

It means exactly what you think it means. Ron Paul has been doing very well among young independent voters, the same voters that overwhelmingly supported Obama.

or it means crossover voting to mess with Romney's numbers; or as a protest vote because no one voting for Paul should believe he's going to be the Repub nominee...
11:09 AM on 02/29/2012
Mr. Romney loses half of the delegates in his home state, beats a joke candidate with a "google problem" by a mere 3% in the popular vote and this is being proclaimed as a "Win"? If this is a win then Al Gore would have been president when he narrowly won the popular vote and lost the electoral vote. I didn't see any "Gore Wins!" headlines after that. The headline here is "Romney Loses Half the Delegates in his Home State - GOP Candidates in Disarray!"

I am old enough to remember that when LBJ won New Hampshire in '68 it was McCarthy that took the most delegates dooming LBJ's re-election bid. Same thing happened in '72 when Muskie won the popular vote and McGovern won the delegates. Ed Muskie did not become the nominee.

So Arizona is not far right wing on religious as some would have everyone believe. Michigan seems to be split between the big large population areas and the rural low population areas. So Michigan become a non sequitur.
11:10 AM on 02/29/2012
Arizona's brand of conservativism runs more toward economic issues and less toward social issues, which is typical for other western states. Plus the Mormon population votes almost exclusively Republican and they voted yesterday almost exclusively for Mitt.

There are lots of Mormons in western states, including AZ. Mitt Romney should do well in the west. Both of Nevada's senators are Mormon, one Dem, one Repub.

Really? It's hard to understand that more people live in cities than outlying towns? LOL!

I'm not from Michigan...I know where some of the bigger cities, like Detroit are, and I have been to the U P, but as far as big cities....I'm not familiar....sorry.

The entire Upper Peninsula as fewer people than Wayne County. Romney won the urban vote; Santorum, the rural vote.

Thank you for this post. To those of us that have been to the UP it is common sense, but others probably don't realize it.
And... I decided to look up a bit more information to support what you said. There are 6 counties in the lower peninsula that have more people than the entire UP (and a couple, including Ingham where I lived, were very close) does. The one you mentioned, Wayne, has 6 times as many people as the entire UP!
Ah, I love numbers. Thanks again.

The takeaway from this is that 58.9% of those voting did not vote for Romney.

Seems I remember the same type of statistics back in 2008 when Obama, Hillary, et al were running. Actually the takeaway is Romney received 44.20% of the vote combined. So on average the remainder of the field received 19.63% of the vote. So Romney beat them all by an average of 24.57%. Aren't statistics wonderful??
10:56 AM on 02/29/2012
In both states, more Republicans voted for someone other than Romney......
11:06 AM on 02/29/2012
How do you justify a lame comment like that. There is ONE moderate, TWO conservatives and ONE libertarian. I think that is why they call this a primary. You have obviously drank too much lame-stream koolade.

Sorry you don't see klile's point it is a valid one. By the way, the only lame-stream in America is the Repub_tea_bag party.
11:19 AM on 02/29/2012
Wow, your defensiveness is certainly on parade this morning, isn't it? I simply stated a fact. In both states, more of the voters in the Republican primary voted for candidates other than Mitt. All, except for Paul maybe, claim to be the "most conservative." Mittens would be aghast at your attempt to label him a moderate.

BTW, that whole Palinesque "lame-stream" thing has become tiresome.

Dick Morris who was Bill Clinton's brains and one of the smartest pundits of the Democratic party, stated the following: One prediction I make that I absolutely stand behind is, There is no way Obama will win the election. Go figure.

In terms of delegates, Romney did not win. He tied with Santorum. Hardly a rousing win.
