Latino Vote 2012: President Obama Takes Steps To Increase Connection To Hispanic Voters

Following the hour-long interview from the White House granted last September to The Huffington Post , MSN Latino and Yahoo en Español, President Obama has recently stepped up his efforts to connect with the Hispanic community, granting more interviews and answering Latino voters’ questions.

The Obama campaign’s latest moves reveal the White House’s realization that, as Charles Garcia explained last week in an Op-Ed, by replicating the strong Latino support of the 2008 election (67% of Latinos voted for Obama then), a Democrat candidate for the presidency may be able to win in states like Arizona, for the first time since Bill Clinton and before that, Harry Truman, as well as "Colorado, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico and North Carolina” even "if he loses key swing states such as Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.”

At the same time, this new campaign tactic highlights the candidate’s concerns regarding sustained criticism among Hispanic leaders and activists for his failure to bring about comprehensive immigration reform which would have granted legal status and a path towards citizenship to many immigrants. Instead of bringing these concerns to a vote, Obama has focused on ratcheting up deportations and contributing to the drop of estimated undocumented immigrants in the U.S. from 12 million to less than 11 million.

These actions have been criticized by some leaders in the Latino community.

"The Obama Administration is responsible for the separation of thousands of families with children who are U.S. citizens,” wrote Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos in the latest issue of Time magazine, adding that "Obama has deported more immigrants--over 1.2 million--than any other President in history."

When Eddie Sotelo, the popular radio show host called "El Piolín,” recently asked Obama, "Thousands of families were separated because of these deportations, leaving their children alone in this country... do you believe you still have the support of the Hispanic community?" -- he was addressing one of the main obstacles to Latino votes that Obama faces come November.

"First of all, Piolin", said the President, who was interviewed on the same program in 2008, "My presidency is not over; I’ve got another five years and we'll get this done." He then switched to reciting unrelated achievements which he says benefit Latinos: "First of all fixing the economy...we made sure that unemployment insurance got extended... the housing settlement that we just passed... the work we've done on education… and more."

While the issue of immigration reform is not the primary concern for Latinos in the US -- t his dubious honor is reserved for jobs, the economy and education -- it is what differentiates this community from others and is a cause of deep anguish, as many Latinos have family members or close friends who either came illegally to this country or overstayed their visa. Nearly six-in-ten Latinos, in a 2008 Pew Hispanic Center survey, said they worried that they themselves or a family member, or a close friend may be deported.

“The only way we are going to get this done fully is by getting Congress to do its job,” said Obama about immigration reform to Piolin. He then enumerated recent steps his administration has taken, like emphasizing deportations of undocumented criminals and making it easier for some immigrants to apply for residency without having to go back to their countries of origin.

In a Radio Bilingue interview published this week, news director Samuel Orozco chose to first question the President about the tax break extensions, high Latino unemployment, and the rising cost of higher education.

Pretty soon, however, Obama's deportation policy came to the forefront of the discussion, along with the DREAM Act -- a federal initiative to grant legal status to some young undocumented students and soldiers.

"What can be done with the alarming and increasing number of children whose parents were detained or deported by ICE, and who are now in foster care or adoption?" asked Orozco.

"Our focus should be the criminals and predators of our communities, and this is where we have moved our efforts,” Obama replied.

As expected, the President called on Congress to approve the Dream Act and urged Latinos to participate in the political process.

So, although officially, Obama's team believes in a victory among Latinos because "the choice will not be that difficult", both interviews portrayed Obama's frustration with criticism from the Latino community for his role in increasing deportations.

"I would have only broken my promise if I hadn’t tried. But ultimately, I’m one man", he told Sotelo about his 2008 campaign promise to pass immigration reform in his first year in office, and then explained to the Latino audience: "You know, we live in a democracy. We don’t live in a monarchy. I’m not the king."

Perhaps the best summation of the GOP's Conservative Extremism and its anti- Latinos groups within the GOP, is that of Ms. Linda Chavez, in a factual speech she made in 2007: "They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent, and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us to become real Americans." This attitude from Republican base is what is causing Latino Voters to shift gears.

January 2008 = The start of "Attrition", The E-verify (Attrition) Law , and The I.C.E. Deportation/Incarceration Programs.

January 2008 Also = The start of "The Worst Recession in U.S. History.

In 1986 The Great President Ronald Reagan facing a massive National Deficit did a few basic things, He lowered Taxes, Cut Defense spending, however most importantly He granted "Amnesty to approx: Three Million Hispanic un-documented Immigrants.

Over the next twenty-five years approx: Twelve Million more un-documented Immigrants came to the Greatest Nation on Earth the only way Poor Immigrants can, un-documented. They worked Hard, started Families, and pursued the True "American Dream", to someday be a part of us, an "American".
This was the Most Prosperous Period in Total U.S. History, until January 2008 when we decided to rather than Reform our Broken Immigration System which dosen't allow the Poor even into line, to instead follow the Bad Advice, and Congressional Bullying of White Supremist Groups and begin Deportation, and "Attrition".

Millions of Good Hard working Human Beings, and their legal Citizen Children and Families have been Persecuted!

The White Supremist Groups are very happy and on the rise in this now Torn Country.

"America is great because it is good, when it ceases to be good, it ceases to be great."

"Attrition", and I.C.E. Put the Car in the Ditch."

Sometimes even "Laws" must be Tempered with our True American Ideals.

Absolutely right, in the USA money talks and BS walks. Obama has done nothing to help the poor, including US Citizens, the poor immigrants that came here to better themselves and help their families, are treated like criminals, families that have been separated, have suffered tremendously, how can anyone agree with these stupid policies?? Arent we the most caring and giving people in the world? Wouldnt anyone jump the fence into Canada, if the economy here was extremely bad to feed their families?? Of course we would cross that border, swim any river and do whatever is needed for the welfare of our children. Obama should not be re-elected, but Romney would be a total disaster!! He reminds me of Hitler, he ( a mexican descent himself ) would love to move all the illegals, no matter where they came here, to a concentration camp, starve them and perhaps deport them, he want " self deportation " which means, they would make it impossible to get a job for illegals and somehow, have them pay they own way home, when in fact, they wont even have money for food. Its dangerous and when people are desperate, we all know, crime will go way up and this kind of policies will put the welfare of all of us in danger. Desperate times call for desperate measures, we need to wake up and smell the coffee. 12 million illegals are not a force to play with!!

If Obama wants to connect to Hispanics and other immigrants, he must stop acting as if he thinks he is smarter than they are, or he risks losing some votes in November.

Case in point: Last week, Obama told Univision radio that he has five more years before his presidency ends so there is plenty of time to fulfill his broken promise of comprehensive immigration reform.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Should Obama get re-elected, he will have no more than a year to get CIR done before Congress gears up for the 2014 midterms and after the midterms, Obama will be a lame duck.

Hopefully, he will stop the special welfare Cubans get when illegally entering the country and demonstrate that he is not afraid of a few Republicans in Meeeamee and willing to equally treat all immigrants.

Some fools in the Republican party believe that putting Marco "I've got mine" Rubio on GOP's ticket will help them get Latino votes in November.

The callous Rubio whose parents got preferential treatment compared to Mexicans and other immigrants because they were Cubans, opposes legalization of the undocumented immigrants (unless they are Cubans). Rubio's parents were just economic refugees just like most Mexicans and they left Cuba several years before Castro came to power.
If anything, Rubio would be a drag on the GOP ticket in terms of Latino voters.

I agree that Rubio won't bring in any Hispanic voters outside of Florida, but maybe that's all they need. There are a lot of Mormons in the West, and that might give Romney an advantage in AZ, NV, and CO, saving him from having to appeal to Hispanic voters.

It's also funny that Obama thinks Hispanics will turn out in large numbers to vote for him again. I don't think so.

Legal Latinos are typically Republican.
11:29 PM on 02/28/2012
Don't think so.

Most Latinos, legal or not, see and feel the negative impact as a result of the Republican agenda. The worst historical and political faces that negatively impact the Latino families come from Republican faces and their supporters, a few examples; Pete Wilson, Brewer, Arpio, Mccain, Saxby Chambliss, Gilchrist, Johny Isackson, Swarchenegger, Lou Dobbs, Sara Palin, Susana Martinez, and more to come with either Romney or Newt G.

Obama hasn't done much for Latinos, yet, any wise, informed, or at least prudent Latino that cares for himself/herself knows that voting Democratic is 10,000 times better than voting Republican. And if voting Democrat is too much, then, even voting Independent wouldn't be as bad.

Actually, there are only individuals who vote according to their own cognative abilities. What is a "Latino"? Someone who hails from Latina, Italy?

I don't think so. Maybe with issues such as abortion and gay rights but not on the economy.

Wait a minute, Obama was interviewed on Piolin's program? That program is in Spanish.

Fail on every level. First of all Piolin was an illegal alien, who conducts his program only in Spanish, so who in the audience understood a single word the president said. Fail.

Second, if the president is so committed to the cause of these Mexican Nationals, why hasn't he bothered to learn Spanish?

After all, he expects everyone else to be bilingual, WTF?
12:02 AM on 02/29/2012
1) Piolin, as many people in his audience are bilingual. But, just so that everyone in the audience can understand, when the president speaks, Piolin or an interpreter reinstates what the president has said.

2) Piolin is a legal resident of the United States.

3) The president as many educated people in our country can articulate basic phrases in another language, in this case; Spanish, which by the way is spoken in approximately 70 countries in the world, not just in Mexico.

4) It is unlikely that the president will expect "everyone" to be bilingual, no individual has the same capabilities, as you can probably well understand.

Finally, I agree and like the quote in your profile: "Ignorance of reality is no excuse"

Obama sullies the office of the President of the United States for even speaking with Piolin, the ex-illegal alien.

Now add fraudster to his list of accomplishments. Didn't they used to make people like this register as a foreign agent in the past?

"But back to this character Piolin. After mixing several batches of cocktails for Teddy, this renegade delivered what were purported to be a million letters from people who support amnesty.

Two immediate problems surfaced with Piolin's pile on. All of the missives were signed by illegal aliens and all were in Spanish!

Undeterred, Kennedy and his anti-American colleagues eagerly accepted several boxes of letters and pointed to them as proof that millions of people are on his side and support amnesty.

That certainly seemed impressive until the full extend of Piolin's fraud was exposed: Most of the boxes supposedly containing proof of a swelling public sentiment in favor of amnesty were empty.

Flat empty, much like the head of Piolin and the gringo drunk from Massachusetts."

"While the issue of immigration reform is not the primary concern for Latinos in the US -- t his dubious honor is reserved for jobs, the economy and education"

Legal immigrants are the biggest victims of illegal immigrants. There aren't enough jobs for everyone that is here. There are no jobs for illegal immigrants. If all 11 million just said: "We are tired of this place. We are going home!" then unemployment would not be as high, but there would be no shortage of hands to do any available work. Unemployment would be lower and wages would be higher and the biggest winners would be the earlier immigrants.

How about instead of arguing on whether the Dream Act should be passed, Obama should fix the United States Department of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and give papers to those who've submitted their case and are waitng for 10+ years. If the USCIS is actually doing their job, the majority of aliens would be doing everything the right way. But because USCIS is slacking we aliens have no other choice but to fight for the Dream Act to pass. Hopefully it'll come true by november. I doubt it tho...

Step 1. Promise another amnesty.
Step 2. Promise another amnesty.
Step 3. Promise another amnesty.
Step 4. Promise another amnesty.

I guess he must not be aware that the public is on to the chambers of commerce's little plan to keep having amnesty after amnesty to keep wages low and the poor indebted to them.

Of course the fact that the 1% love amnesty because it keeps profits high is a side attraction that all politicians love.
