Ohio School Shooting Victims: Three Dead After T.J. Lane Allegedly Opened Fire At Chardon High School

Victims

First Posted: 02/28/2012 4:33 pm Updated: 02/28/2012 7:09 pm

The three teenagers killed in the Chardon High School shooting were described by friends and family as a good-natured group of students who often sat together in the cafeteria.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Daniel Parmertor, Russell King, Jr. and Demetrius Hewlin died from wounds inflicted by a gunman, identified by his lawyer as T.J. Lane, while two other students were recovering in a Cleveland-area hospital.

Parmertor, 16, a junior, died several hours after Lane allegedly opened fire around 7:30 a.m. He was seated at a lunchroom table with the other victims and waiting for a bus to go to a vocational school for a Cisco computer network course, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

LATEST UPDATES: T.J. Lane Arraigned In Chardon High School Shooting Case

An uncle told the newspaper that his nephew envisioned a career working with computers. In his spare time, he liked to snowboard and play video games.

King, 17, a junior, split his time between Chardon HIgh and the vocational school Auburn Career Center, where he studied solar- and wind-energy. Auburn's superintendant described him as a "very social kid, quick with a smile."

Like Parmertor, King was airlifted from the school to a hospital. He was declared brain dead Tuesday morning.

Lane, 18, had pleaded guilty last month to shooting at students in February 2012 at Chardon High School, east of Cleveland. Investigators have said he admitted to the shooting but said he didn't know why he did it. Parmertor and two others were fatally shot Monday at Chardon High School. Hundreds showed up for his wake at Monreal Funeral Home in Eastlake on Friday, the same day students returned to classes.

One of his friends, Nate Mueller -- who was grazed by a bullet -- said that King had begun dating a former girlfriend of Lane's. But Mueller, a culinary student in Auburn, doubted that jealousy was Lane's motive.

Lane, 17, also rode the bus with King, Parmertor and Mueller. However, he rode it to a school for troubled teens.

Demetrius Hewlin, also a junior, was the third casualty of the shooting when his death was reported Tuesday afternoon.

Unlike the other victims, he didn't attend Auburn Career Center. But Hewlin often sat with his friend Mueller and the others in Charbon's lunchroom in the morning. Classmates described him as a workout fanatic who spent a lot of time in the gym and aspired to be on the football team, but was kept off due to low grades.

His aunt, Lenora Henson told the Plain Dealer that "he was raised a good and happy kid. He was a very good boy."

For Americans serious about their kids well being and education in a serene setting without guns and violence, here is an alternative. This school has prepared many who became outstanding Doctors, Engineers and Scientists. This is my Alma mater and the school's mission statement:

The intention of the school, in other words, is to awaken the intelligence and the generosity of spirit in students so that they are able to meet an increasingly complex world without losing their humanity. The cultivation of a global outlook, a love of nature and a concern for mankind are all part of our educational aims. More specific goals of the educational philosophy of Rishi Valley School are:

To educate students so that they are able to explore both the world and their inner being
To inculcate a love for nature and respect for all forms of life
To create an atmosphere of affection, order and freedom without either fear or license
Not to condition the students in any particular belief, either religious, political or social, so that their minds may remain free to ask fundamental questions, enquire and learn

wow people are blaming the victims already, even if the kid was bullied, he still committed an atrocious act and deserves a harsh penalty.

Amen.

Clearly the shooter became unhinged from reality.

Isn't it possible his perception of "bullying" was fantasy as well?

At a minimum, the facts need to be clearer. I don't condone bullying in any form or fashion--I have kids that have been the recipient of bullying. But I dont think a bully deserves a death sentence, much less a death sentence without a chance to explain or defend himself.
09:58 AM on 03/01/2012
We need to stop the bulling :( I think things like this would not happen as often if people were just nice to each other. I know I don't want my son spreading hate. I hope I raise him better than that.

I was very impressed with the forgiving spirit of the mother of Demetrius Hewlin. In the day where everyone seems to want revenge for everything, she simply says she forgives the killer and warned others to make no judgements against him. Christian isn't something you just say you are. Some politicians and others should take note.

I will never understand where the judicial system can decide to try as an adult when they are not. The average persons skullis not even closed until they are in their early 20's. He is not an adult, he is a kid. Just does not make sense to me. Please do not thinkI am saying he should get a slap on the hand-but he is no adult. Shame the parents or school didn't see he was ill.
04:22 PM on 03/01/2012
I completely agree. I'm so done reading comments that he should be put to death for killing others. But no one should be put to death he's someones son, grandson, or friend and it's a shame what he did.

This Mother is a much better person than I am. It would take a very long time to find forgiveness if anyone killed one of my children or my Grand child. If ever----

I wonder how many times teachers and administrators saw the bullying going on and looked the other way? Many a times when I was in high school I saw this stuff happening in class rooms, lunch rooms, hallways and locker rooms. Sometimes teachers would stop it but most of the time a teacher would be close by and ignore it. You can only push people so far before they snap. But I read one of the kids was dating the shooters ex girlfriend that broke his heart. If this is the reason for the shooting than I hope the court shows no remorse. If this is another case of bullying taken to far to where the poor kid couldn't take it anymore than shame on the victims, parents for letting the kids get away with it and teachers and administrators for letting the bullying happen at school. Bullying needs to have very severe punishment. There is no place for it in school!
03:45 PM on 03/02/2012
by turning another cheek and never pay attention. come on, i have been bullied to the extreme and i end up forgiving no matter how much i want to pay back with vengeance.

We NEVER talk about the ELEPHANT in the room ! WHY is it that in 99% of the killings / murders it is our boys who are the perpetrators ! Why and how has our parenting, our society failed to raise our boys with a sense of empathy, belonging, purpose beyond their immeadiate gratification? Until we, as a society, at least ASK those questions (come on media !!) there is NO hope !!

Hoff post is so racist. Why are you not showing the little boy of color like you are showing the two white kids? And why did you report about the little boy of color's grades stating that is why he didn't make the football team? You all are so damn pitiful. Talk about kicking a person when they are down, literally. You have no decency; you have no shame!

Also, people on this list who state that they have no sympathy for the kids if they bullied Lane are sick. Since when does bullying deserve death? First, Lane randomly shot at students. He was not targeting those who had done him harm per se. Second, as a person who endured bullying for years while in school, I did not go out and shoot anybody. Nor did I ever think of doing it--and my grand parents owned fire arms. Bullying is hurtful. Boy do i know it. But these folks killing themselves and committing homicide because of bullying indicates that we are in a sad state of affairs in this country. Sad indeed for all around.
04:18 PM on 02/29/2012
Lol.
Well for my opinion~

If they bullied him, Than no sympathy here. Cool more people died. So what? So many people do everyday~.

And if they didn't, than oh well so sad, boo hoo. Like I said. People die everyday.
05:44 PM on 02/29/2012
These students didn't bully him. A young life cut short is always a tragedy; how would you feel if it was your friend, your brother, your son?? You should probably get some counseling; a dissociation with the value of a life and a lack of empathy is a sign of a mental issue.
08:39 PM on 02/29/2012
