'All The Rowboats,' Regina Spektor's Comeback Track

First Posted: 02/28/2012 6:15 pm Updated: 02/28/2012 6:21 pm

Regina Spektor is back with a new single, and this time there's a bit of an angry techno beat in the mix.

Last heard from on her 2009 album 'Far," Spektor has dropped a tense, electronic tune complete with her signature erratic piano notes.

As for the lyrics of the song, Spektor has one focus: Freeing the poor, trapped objects in a museum.

"All the rowboats and oil paintings, they keep trying to row away, row away," Spektor sings repeatedly in the chorus.

"All The Rowboats" is off Spektor's upcoming album What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, due out in May.

"Regina Spektor is that rare artist that continues to surprise," the album's producer, Mike Elizondo, said. "Just when you think you have her figured out, she knocks you out with something completely different. It's that spirit that drives this record. Each song takes you on a journey that only Regina is capable of providing. She has truly outdone herself."

How do you think "All The Rowboats" compares to Spektor's other work? Let us know in the comments.

This isn't a comeback. She sang this song a long time ago. She just recorded it professionally. Not knocking it though. Anything from her is amazeballs.

So much noise, I miss when it was just her and a piano, and a stick.

What do you mean "comeback"? She has been working constantly.

all the rowboats is a song regina has been singing live for over 6 years now, and i'm chuffed to bits, it's finally getting a proper release. i love the melody and the lyrics are very profound, while creating a darck melancholic background to the whole song. can't wait for the new album.

I like Regina, she's a very talented musician. Like PJ Harvey she's not for everybody. And thank God for that.

Comeback? Breaks her silence? You act like she's been gone for 10 years. I like HuffPo, but you really do have the worst headline writers around.

I know Huffpo is the worst for headlines. Often I feel like I've been mislead when I click on a headline only to find out the story and the headline are vaguely related. It's like they get paid for each headline someone clicks on.

She's wonderful and also has been writing a Broadway musical. Love this!

Doesn't a comeback imply that you were away for awhile? 3 years isn't that long.

Regina's a great talent. Having her take a 3 year vacation from releasing new albums only SEEMS like forever to her fans. It's great to see her take a new direction and include some techno beat into her acapella piano music. Kinda catchy. I like it. Truth be told... I'd listen to her read out of the phone book. She's just "bubbly cute" in person. Not a home run, but a solid double.

You should broaden your horizons a bit then. She's been around since the late 90's

"Far" was a fantastic album; I don't mind this song but it doesn't compare to many of the songs on that album. "Blue Lips", "Two Birds", "Human of the Year", etc. have that feeling of being more raw or uninhibited; while this song may show a natural progression of her music, my fear is that it may be a focus on appealing to a more mainstream audience.

No, I'm not a hipster - I actually wish more people would give her music a chance and wouldn't all of a sudden hate her if she became number 1 on the charts - I'm just saying that if people didn't latch onto "Far" or a bunch of her other songs that have been great, then I don't think changing it up with a little techno will do much. Like I said the song isn't bad, so I'll have to wait for the rest of the album to know where this fits in.

:/ Those are really the same things people said about "Far," though. I really don't think that's what she's doing. I think she's just experimenting. All of her albums are totally different, when you think about it. 11:11 was filled with raw jazzy pieces. Songs had a lot of her weirdest pieces, the ones that really defy genre. Soviet Kitsch was very eclectic, everything with rap like "Consequence of Sounds" to the heavy metallesque "Your Honor." Begin to Hope was closer to pop, but with a few of those inexplicably "Regina" pieces on the extended version. Far is full-on pop, though still with a great deal of depth.

Who knows what this album will bring? This song is certainly pretty cool, and the only thing slightly like it that she's done is (I think) Edit, so it's fun that she's exploring. Regina is not one to be constrained by genre, and I really like that about her.

I'm not a big fan of Regina Spektor, and that a whole flock of young female singers have parroted her inflections and coy demeanor while singing irks me a bit, but the new song is not bad.

I'm not rushing over to iTunes. Seems like a song that would pop up on Pandora a bunch and grown on me.

To make a comeback, you have to have been there in the first place. Her music is best suited for tv commercials.

And yet she has sold out concerts when she tours. I think she's more than "been there".
