Dr. Oz Two Day Spring Cleanse To Help You Detox

First Posted: 02/29/2012 8:58 am   Updated: 05/16/2012 1:55 pm

In the March issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, Dr. Oz outlines a two-day cleanse to help detox your body. But this cleanse won't have you sipping on citrus water while eyeing your pantry longingly. Instead, the cleanse focuses on a 48-hour menu of purifying whole foods, ranging from smoothies to whole grain.

Dr. Oz writes in O Magazine:

On talk shows and in magazines, I often hear celebrities championing cleanses. But when they say 'cleanse' and I say 'cleanse,' we're usually talking about two very different things. Celebrities use the word to refer to so-called detox diets that promise to help you shed 20 pounds in two weeks. These rapid weight loss regimens can deprive you of crucial nutrients and calories, forcing your body into starvation mode. You do lose weight, but as your metabolism slows, the pounds eventually creep back.

When I say 'cleanse,' I mean it in the sense of true cleaning -- a strategy that helps your body rid itself of toxins.

So are you ready for some spring cleansing? Check out the slideshow below for some of Dr. Oz's tips to make the most of your two-day cleanse, courtesy of O Magazine, and read more about Dr. Oz's cleanse menu (including recipes), cleanse philosophy and how your body's detox process works here. (Be sure to consult your doctor before starting any new diet or cleanse.)

Google Dr. Oz @ Columbia University for the information he would prefer to have deleted from his past. Hint: animal lovers will be upset, very upset.

I am surprised to hear an MD use the word "toxin" and "cleanse" in a medical/clinical/professional sense. Toxins? I believe our bodies do that automatically via the 3 Ps: Poo, Pee and Perspiration. This sounds so Candles and Sandals to me.

Processed sugar is poison. It causes diabeties and insulin resistance. High carbs cause obesity. A diet of raw veggies and some meat is what our bodies are designed for. I have lost 80 pounds eating what they now call the "primal diet" which is very simular to Atkins Diet.
Also you must suppliment vitamins. Most of our food has little to no nutrition as the soil that it is grown in is dead.

I gained weight on the primal diet. My cholesterol rose so high that I am now on pills to lower it. My Doctor told me to eat a more balanced diet and take a multivitamin. Now, I am slowly losing weight. The anger in your comment is jarring.

I continually hear about these toxins that must be cleansed, but no one ever says what these nameless toxins actually are. Big mystery.

Any tips on ridding my consciousness of Dr. Oz?
I practice avoidance, but then I'm skimming through the Huffington Post and BANG—there he is again....

The best way I've found to "rid my body of toxins" is a nightly dose of a good single malt scotch such as Glenfiddich. It is often more challenging and difficult to rid oneself of Holier-than-thou, self-professed "experts" who claim to know what is best for everyone else such as Dr. Oz who has had a close personal call with colon cancer or Dr. R. Atkins who may have suffered a cardiac arrest, to site just two examples. Clearly these charlatans are primarily interested in selling books and ridding your body of your money more than anything else.

Dr Oz has a very disturbing history of cruel and painful vivi-section on dogs and puppies at Columbia University. Something he would very much like to disappear given his new media celebrity and huge paychecks courtesy of Oprah.

I always hear about these "toxins" that are being "cleansed" by some fad diet nonsense and wonder who exactly is falling for this crap? In truth all that is required for general health is moderate diet, moderate daily exercise, and a bit of sleep.

Dandelion tea and epsom salt baths? Yeah, right.

Drink enough. Sleep enough. Avoid night eating. No argument there for just clean living.

BUT...

Dr. Oz, do you suggest that Mg++ salts readily penetrate the barrier epithelium of the skin and enter the bloodstream? By what permeability mechanisms is this improbable feat accomplished? (given the frank polarity of a divalent cation and the lipid barrier of multiple cell plasma membranes) Why not just sip a tiny amount of dilute Mg++ salt and let it enter the bloodstream the "natural" way, via gut absorption through a permeable transport epithelium?

Dr. Oz, by what biochemical pathway does dandelion tea assist the body? What are the ingredients of dandelion tea that specifically stimulate or augment the body's intrinsic processes? And which of those processes are targeted? In medical school, you passed an intensive course in biochemistry, so surely you can point this out.

Otherwise, this isn't science, or even medicine. It's quackery.

This idea of "ridding your body of toxins" is a load of hooey.

Here's a hint: what do you think a doctor seen here on the runway somewhere in front of a Revlon sign have to say about toxins? It just came out last week that many lipsticks have lead in them.

So what was that about toxins, Doc?

Gee, another doctor who we're all supposed to listen to because Oprah had him on her show. Hmm...

Yes, be cautious—back in the 70s, my husband and I went to an "herbalist" who advised us to drink massive amounts of tea brewed from comfrey leaves....which we did for some months.
Flash forward 20 years, and we learn that comfrey is a toxic substance—today it has a label warning that it's not for internal consumption!
I'm lucky I went through my "voodoo medicine" period when I was young and strong enough to survive it—just because something grows in the ground doesn't mean it's harmless.

All excellent tips, you may want to cut dairy out of your diet and anything that has corn in it as well, wheat too if at all possible, or just cut back. No processed food is the key.

That leaves you with plenty of choice!

Diet is everything!
