Nathan Lane Mocks The GOP Candidates On 'Late Show With David Letterman' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/29/2012 6:08 am Updated: 02/29/2012 9:28 am

Nathan Lane stopped by "Late Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS) Tuesday night and delivered his assessment of the GOP candidates running for the 2012 Republican party presidential nomination

First up was Mitt Romney who, Lane thought, "should be strapped to the roof of a station wagon and driven cross-country to Canada."

How about Rick Santorum? To gales of laughter from the audience Nathan suggested Santorum be "sent on a two-week gay cruise with nothing but a speedo and a sweater vest."

He then joked that Santorum's sweater vest is the best contraception: when he wears it, "abstinence finds him."

Lane also came up with some surprising new post-politics careers for Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.

Gingrich could be a Jenny Craig spokesperson, but only after going on a juice-only diet plan.

Whereas Paul, Lane mused, would just need to kept busy. "Perhaps there's an Elks Club in need of a bingo caller."

"Late Show With David Letterman" airs Weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.

I miss Michele Bachmann and her husband, Marcus, the ex-gay dude. Imagine what Nathan Lane could do with THEM ...

I've noticed that when you are a self-loathing Hater like the GOP, you don't find anything funny.

Nathan has too many writers - and two few stylists.

A brilliant comic (stage mostly) but don't you remember "Le cage aux folles" with Robin Williams?
And a very funny guy...

Technically La Cage Aux Folles was the original French movie that Robin and Nathan remade as The Birdcage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5TQ4GF8rNI

Actually the movie came from a 1973 French play by the same name by Jean Poiret and was then on Broadway for several years before the Hollywood movie.

The conservatives replying here are only upset because they have no one funny or with a sense of humor on their side.

They're empty, inside and out.

Souless....hateful....greedy, parochial...incapable of genuine humor unless it's about making someone they don't like suffer, lose, disappear or die. That's funny for them.

Especially if it's all of you. Now THAT'S entertainment!

I suppose you are going to claim that "Fraiser" or "Drew Carey" wasn't funny. If you do, you are a liar (like we couldn't see that one coming).

I liked Santorum's best. I'd pay to be on that cruise and I'm not gay.

He'd get fired halfway through his first shift due to all the complaints over him lecturing the customers rather than greeting them.

a speedo and a sweater vest... that's a visual... I'm going to have a nightmare tonight, just can't get that nasty image out of my mind... on a gay cruise no less... gay cruises will never be the same again.

neither would Rick Santorum if he went on a gay cruise.

maybe that is what he needs.

The only problem I have with this isn't so much Lane (who I find hysterical on Modern Family); rather anytime someone jokes about Obama, the left will claim the jokers or jokes are racist.

After three years, frankly writing, I'm sick of it. If you can dish it out, then accept reciprocal critique without running to the race card.

That is all.
01:12 AM on 03/01/2012
That's not Lane on Modern Family; it's Eric Longstreet.

So, I'm thinking you find Longstreet very funny on Mod Family. Me, too.

(And, btw, Longstreet is not gay; he just plays a gay character. Lane is gay).

Great sitcom!

Nathan Lane plays "Pepper" on modern family....Cam's friend. It is a recurring character, so he's on periodically!
10:08 AM on 03/01/2012
Sorry--when the "joke" is a picture of Obama dressed as a witch doctor from a bad '50s Tarzan movie--it becomes fairly obvious that the "joke" is, indeed, racist.
