Afghanistan: NATO Soldiers Killed By 2 Afghans, Including Man Believed To Be Soldier

KABUL, March 1 (Reuters) - Two NATO soldiers were shot dead on Thursday by two Afghans, including a man believed to be a soldier, NATO said, an attack that is likely to raise further questions about the future of the country's struggling security forces.

The killings in south Afghanistan came after two senior U.S. officers were gunned down in the heart of Afghanistan's Interior Ministry on Saturday by what Afghan security officials say was a police intelligence official.

That attack stunned NATO and cast doubt on its strategy of replacing large combat units with advisers as the alliance tries to wind down the war, now in its eleventh year.

NATO immediately moved to withdraw all its advisers from Afghan ministries in Kabul, followed by Britain, Germany and Canada.

The Obama administration will not swerve from plans to move into an advisory role in Afghanistan, U.S. officials say. But Afghan officials worry that further attacks by Afghan forces on Western troops could damage ties with NATO.

At least five NATO soldiers have been killed by Afghan security forces since the burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base last month triggered widespread protests.

According to the U.S. Pentagon, around 70 members of the NATO force were killed in 42 insider attacks from May 2007 through January 2012.

These incidents have become more frequent after the United States sent tens of thousands of more soldiers to Afghanistan as part of a surge to fight in Taliban strongholds.

"There are Taliban sympathisers in uniform inside Afghan security forces who are not in fact sent or recruited by the Taliban," said an Afghan government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Despite tighter vetting procedures, such unfortunate incidents do occur. This problem will not go away. We need more time, more resources and manpower."

Some of Washington's partners have shown even greater sensitivity to insider attacks. In January, French President Nicolas Sarkozy suspended training and support operations and announced that France would withdraw entirely by the end of 2013 after four French troops were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier.

The United States hopes Afghan forces will be able to confront the Taliban and handle security on their own before NATO combat troops' scheduled departure by the end of 2014.

Insider attacks on NATO troops have deepened doubts about their commitment and effectiveness.

"Unfortunately, this situation is a point of concern for us," General Afzal Aman, head of the operations department at the Ministry of Defence, told Reuters.

My humble opinion is that we should start the process of leaving Afghanistan, let the Afghans start their march towards freedom or slavery by the taliban! its their choice...we did our job and chased al queda out and did the Afghans a favor by getting the taliban out of power. Now its up to them...they have the training, weapons, now all they need is the will!!!

Boo F**king Hoo....korans that were printed on a printing press and have the words of Muhammed in it...does not constitute an object made by GOD! It was made by men...and is only meant to convey the words from the original book....like the Bible! they are only man made books. Its not as if they are the tablets from that hold the 10 commandments that was written in GODS hand. the over reaction by zealots of any religion only shows the violent behavior of man...not his Godly side! it is ashame man can be so easily lead by criminals and maniacs.

Can anyone of us imagine what it is like to be surrounded by the soldiers of Afghanistan? Soldiers we have trained, armed and might now turn a weapon on one of us? Who can our troops trust? Evidently none of our troops (or any NATO troops) are safe, as is evident by the killing of two of our troops inside the Department of the Interior Ministry.

Yes - the Interior Ministry, over which Karzai has complete control.

I couldn't stand being forced to walk patrol with them no matter what country I was in. For all I knew I might have shot their brother 6 months before. I never turned my back on them and yes from time to time I disarmed them while on patrol. I would take their ammo and make let them walk with their weapons, but no rounds. A couple of times we simply took their weapons when things felt off. This shows just how much we trusted each other.

The American people love our troops, however, I believe most feel if we are going to have them be "sitting ducks" with no clear plan, it is time to leave. We can no longer trust even those we thought were allies. This administrations' apologies have shackled our troops. What a shame. And HP is typically burying this story, but the truth is out. ALL of the other major sites have this story as their lead, even those that are in the tank for the president. He said his apologies has "calmed things down" I don't think so. I think his apology has as much a chance of working as this post making it past the mods.

Afghanistan will be the same after the US troops pull out as it was before they got there.
There is no purpose served by remaining there.

The only benefit of wasting thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars is the death of Osama Bin Ladern - there were less expensive ways of doing this - the CIA used to run effective covert operations - or subcontract it to the Mossad (they might have done it gratis or just for a bombing raid on Iran's nuclear facilities).

The US has been and still is playing the fool
