Dick Clark's Malibu Retreat Listed For $3.5 Million (PHOTOS)

Dick Clark's Malibu hideaway makes crawling under a rock seem like an attractive proposition.

The home, which looks as if it were carved from one massive megalith, sits atop a mountain and almost 23 acres of land (zoned, of course, for horses and a pool).

The property's vantage point boasts 360-degree views of the surrounding ocean, mountains and city, which can be taken in through the home's wide glass panel windows.

The one-bedroom, two-bathroom retreat went on the market Thursday for a cool $3.5 million -- a far cry from the $500 it took to purchase the land in 1991.

Clark is best-known for the show "American Bandstand," which he hosted in the 50s and 60s. He is also the ever-youthful face of New Year's Eve in America. He's produced and hosted the "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" countdown every year since 1972 -- except for 2004, the year he suffered a massive stroke. When he returned in 2005, he co-hosted the New Year's Eve countdown with Ryan Seacrest, which he's done every year since then.

Only thing is that it IS NOT in Malibu, it's to the north in Ventura County. And as to why only $500 in 1991, there is still cheap land in those hills. Problem is getting said land approved for development, it can take years and an insane amount of money to do so.

Yup it's difficult in Ventura County they encourage development within incorporated cities and other urbanized areas.

Perhaps it was so cheap because it's expensive to get utilities to it as well, plus it might be under the flight path of Pt. Mugu military base.

I've been in that house and it's beautiful. As I recall, you walked over a small river or moat type thingie to get to the front door. The home is very warmly furnished and comfortable.
Considering who lives there and the location, it's a really good price.

And no, I'm not a realtor and don't know who the realtor is on this.

I'm just sayin'

23 acres of mountain top land in Southern California for $500 bucks in 1991. I hope that's a typo or else I severely missed out on a great investment.

Probably more like $500K.

When my folks first moved to the SF bay area in 1959, they said land was selling for $20 per acre in San Mateo. You'd be hard-pressed to find an empty lot in that area now for under $300K.

A fabulous retreat. Must be the best views in all of southern California.
