13 Fun Facts About Pinterest Users (INFOGRAPHIC)

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/ 1/2012 12:38 pm   Updated: 03/ 1/2012 2:53 pm

Though it launched nearly two years ago, Pinterest has recently taken the internet by storm with its clean, image-heavy interface and fresh take on social networking.

The pinboard-style, taste-sharing website recently hit 10 million unique monthly views faster than any standalone site in U.S. history. The image "pinning" model, on which Pinterest is based, has already spawned nearly a dozen look-alike sites that focus on everything from Jeremy Lin to pornography.

But who exactly are the users who have brought Pinterest so quickly to the top of the social heap, and how are they putting the site to use?

Virginia-based digital advertising agency Modea helped to answer these questions by creating the "veryPinteresing" infographic below, which was posted on Modea's blog on February 25. A play on Pinterest's signature pinboard, the infographic features data compiled from internet marketing research company comScore, content sharing service Shareaholic, and TechCrunch.

One of the most startling findings? Pinterest appears to hold users' attention longer than Facebook. On average, each time they visit the site, Pinterest users will spend 15.8 minutes "pinning," while Facebook users will only spend 12.1 minutes flipping through your latest vacation album, again.

You may have already heard that Pinterest drives more referral traffic than Google+, YouTube, and LinkedIn combined (a stat Modea made sure to include), but what you may not have known is that it's the kind of traffic advertisers' dreams are made of. Nearly a third of all Pinterest users have an annual household income of $100,000 or more, almost 70 percent are female and the largest age demographic represented on the site are people between 25 and 34. A recent study from Flurry Analytics found that the EXACT demographic Pinterest is most popular with is also the one that is the most valuable to mobile advertisers -- young, upper-middle class and female.

Forget the Facebook IPO, this Pinterest thing is going to be huge.

Lady Gaga has been called a "social media queen," and it's not very surprising that she's backed her very own social-networking site called LittleMonsters.

The newcomer site, which Mashable dubbed a Reddit-Pinterest hybrid, hasn't officially launched yet (you must request an invite to join), but it will eventually let you post your favorite Mother Monster-related images and connect with other Gaga-lovers.

I still don’t know why women are using it more than men? :-) since is one of the nicest marketing tool one can ever have. Perhaps is because at first women started to use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share their favorite recipes etc.. but nowadays it's a must have marketing tool if you want to success in online marketing such as an affiliate. We're always on the look out of new rising Pinterest sites and you might want to check out http://socialmedia-combo.com to know more amazing things Pinterest can do for your business. Good Luck to all...

Really interesting infographic. My coworkers LOVE Pinterest and I don't really understand the appeal. I just want to spend more of my time in the present and less time on my phone and on my computer.

the problem when people stop cloning things you get no innovation. imagine social networks stopped cloning after myspace? no facebook. no search engines after yahoo? no google. i'm already seeing pinterest competiors leapfrogging them in terms of innovation, like weheartit or http://www.juxtapost.com. both are taking it in new directions. juxtapost alone has several features that people go gaga for.

pinterest is ripping off people's photos.

As soon as someone hits the pin it button, your photo is uploaded to their site and they claim ownership. Your links don't always follow. They will use your photos however they like when the monetization starts.

All this is done WITHOUT the image-creator's permission.

From what I've seen, some people are saving the pictures on their iPhone and not posting it with the links, but most are going directly to the links. Also, a number of sites and blogs now have the pinterest logo for pinning items.

I enjoy pinterest because I don't have to deal with negativity for the most part, and it's given me a lot of things to check out, recipes, crafts, and cleaning tools that save me money. Hopefully pinterest will not rip people off when they do start earning money.
