John Edwards Trial: Judge Sets April Date To Hear Campaign Finance Charges

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The delayed campaign finance trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards is now scheduled to begin in April.

U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Eagles ruled Thursday in Greensboro that jury selection will begin April 12, with the presentation of evidence to start April 23. Eagles expects the trial to last about six weeks.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of using campaign money to cover up an affair during his unsuccessful 2008 presidential candidacy.

Eagles also heard arguments over whether expected testimony by former Edwards aide Andrew Young and others should be admissible. Eagles said she would make a decision on those issues during the trial.

Edwards defenses have been all along the same: (1) he claimed to have been raped by Riehle, and was embarassed when child was born as result of the rape to let Elizabeth know that he had been raped, (2) he claimed to have lied about sex and paternity of child because he "loved Elizabeth, did it all for Elizabeth...yes, I lied because I love Elizabeth"....what a model citizen.

You had a lovely, intelligent wife who put aside much of her own professional career to focus on your aspirations. A wife who endured the death of your 16 year-old son, but had the fortitude to go on to have two more children with you so your oldest daughter would have a brother and sister. You were wealthy beyond most people's imagination and yet had fashioned a pretty believable image for yourself as champion of the poor. Having already been a US senator and vice presidential candidate, you were running for president of the United States. And your wife, even though she was so ill with breast cancer, continued campaigning at your side. You were living the American dream.

Where did you go inside of your own head to decide you were entitled to more?

politicsathome... I would like to ask him the same question... I think it has to do with a selfish, character flaw... and seems to me it shows up in Democrats more frequently than the Republicans...I freely admit Republicans are not all Angels either...however, Pres. Clinton and his sexual escapades in the Oval Office with Mr. Lewinski... I don't think can ever be topped... although John Edwards comes close...you get what you vote for.. think about that fact at the voting booth on Nov 6th ...

I don't condone what I view as destructive or immoral behavior by anyone--Republican or Democrat. I'm an equal opportunity kind of person when it comes to that.

But when I hit the voting booth in November, I'll be thinking about protecting the privacy of my own body and preserving my reproductive health.
