Mac Users Are More Fashionable Than PC Users, Study Finds (INFOGRAPHIC, PHOTOS)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/01/2012 8:37 am Updated: 03/01/2012 11:13 am

Attention Apple users: if you've long suspected that you are, in fact, actually cooler than your PC-adoring counterparts, new data suggests you're right.

A study conducted by the data-driven review site Bundle analyzed data from over 700,000 PC and Mac buyers on how and where they spend their money.

Their conclusion: Mac users really are more fashion-forward and style-conscious than PC users.

Shots fired?

Bundle's research examined which stores computer users tend to favor. They found that while Mac users are more likely to drop tons of cash at luxury stores like Jimmy Choo, PC users lean towards more modest price points, like Old Navy. Even while outlet shopping, Mac users seek to score bargains at stores like Coach and Last Call by Neiman Marcus; PC users tended to be fans of the Van Heusen outlet and Columbia Sportswear.

So, maybe Apple fans are more likely to shell out for a pair of Tory Burch flats than their PC counterparts. But can you boil this argument down to the fact that Macs are simply more expensive than PCs, and thus its users tend to be more affluent? Perhaps: Bundle found that 40 percent of the anonymous Mac users they examined earned more than $100,000, compared with 29 percent of PC users.

In addition, demographic data has long shown that Mac users skew younger, which could account for Apple fans' proclivity for hipper, trendier stores while their parents scour the racks at stodgier mainstream retailers.

Click over to Bundle to read even more interesting findings from the study, and check out their fascinating infographic below to see precisely which stores Mac users favor over PC fans.

Wow, another article to reinforce discrimination and closed-mindedness among tech consumers. Different people flock to different brands, and places, true...part of that is product placement/'brand-washing'.
Truly a devolving society in this particular aspect. If this is what the people desire, keep giving it to them, right? Telling them the truth will only crush their spirits and hurt the economy, right?

"Their conclusion, based on an analysis of the spending habits of 700,000 PC and Mac buyers, is that Mac users were more "fashion-forward" and "style-conscious" than PC users."

I thought fashion was supposed to encourage new designs and ideas. If fashion was Mac-based, it would be white and shiny, and be wearing the same thing underneath that every other model is wearing, with a different breast cup size. And their personalities would be shallow, simplistic, cut-and-paste and expensive to maintain.

Also, I think the "study" is mistaking "cool" with "obnoxiously pretentious".

I use and support both platforms on a regular basis. They are tools to get a job done, and ever since Apple moved to Intel, there is literally no discernible difference in the system hardware (the RAM all comes from the same place, as do the displays, hard drives, and main boards-- only the package which contains them, and the operating system they run are different. Both platforms break; with a few exceptions, both platforms run the same software most of us use. This whole "cool factor" thing simply needs to go away.

If you look at the data-graphics above, there is something obvious and clear: PC users all shop at the exact same places, but just in a lesser proportion. (It's not as if Mac users go to Barney's and PCs don't.) What this simply shows is that fewer PC people either (a) have the money to shop in these places, or (b) even want to shop in these places.

I also fundamentally disagree with the tone of the article: "Congratulations, Mac users, you are cooler!" It's kind of disgusting.

How about a study that compares narcissism among Mac/PC'ers ... or likelihood of volunteering? ... or having non-materialistic values?

Maybe that should be the new definition of 'cool'.

I disagree completely with this article. If to be fashionable is to spend the most money, then sure, there is a point here. However, just because a person may have more money and a better, annual income, it doesn't necessarily mean they're wise with their money, it merely means that they can afford to be a little more lenient.

And who is to say that the high-end shops sell the best stuff? The cost of something doesn't dictate the style of it. I would be happier wearing a $10 shirt with an appealing graphic-style, than something that costs $150, but is from Saks.

This argument doesn't need to boil down to anything, because the point is quite clear. Mac users may have more money, but, are far from wise in the spending of it. To reiterate this point further, fashion and style is all about the combination of what a person wears, what it looks like, and whether or not it suits them. Not where they get it from.

Fanned and faved. All this study has shown is that Mac users are more superficial and wasteful than PC users!

Interesting response. But MACs last so much longer than PC's. They are more durable and technology-forward. In addition to appreciating the value of MACs (I have owned three, in over 20 years. My current one is 6 years old and still just fine. In the same period of time I have not gone through very many pairs of shoes- because I buy quality. Handbags? Not so many. Eyeglasses? Beautiful, fashionable, and so style forward that the still look good years later. It is not about what I wear, but what wears timelessly and well.

PC:Cooler Master HAF932, ASUS P8P67 Deluxe B3 Intel P67 Motherboard, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Core i7-2600K Unlocked Processor 3.40GHz (w/o OC), ASUS GeForce GTX 580 Card 1.5GB VRAM, SSD 128GB (OS), 1TB Hard Drive 7200RPM, Cooler Master 750W Power Supply, Noctua CPU Cooler, and Samsung 32" LED HDTV 1920x1080.This PC can Decimate any Mac 5x over, and it only cost slightly more to build than it costs to buy an iMac. Macs are for people who arent particularly computer savy, any hardcore computer geek will choose a PC anyday, the amount of power you get for your money far exceeds that you can get with a Mac.

Core i7-2600K Unlocked Processor 3.40GHz (w/o OC), ASUS GeForce GTX 580 Card 1.5GB VRAM is really good configuration, but 128GB is not a SSD, What i know about solid state drive is for example :http://www.linkdelight.com/013610-Kingspec-240GB-SATA-2.5-MLC-SSD-F-Network-SPK-SF12-M240.html .so i don't think 128gb is ssd.

This PC could destroy any Mac, and it cost just over the price of the iMac. Anyone who says Macs are better are falling for Hype and Apples superior advertising. Macs are better than the average PC you buy at a store but if you build the PC you will get far more than any Mac could ever get you.

Mainly because Mac users like spending tons of money on things that are popular.
"Fashionable" people generally aren't, they can just afford whatever they please and that always happens to be whats "trendy" and popular.

In the end, they both like to waste money on showy things. Nuff' said.

For Mac users talking about all the money wasted on support and repairs required by using a PC
---> PEBKAC.

Don't blame it on the computers.

As both a Windows user and Mac User, the Mac world is superior. Mac products are much easier to use and own, thus ideal for hipsters. They also have more style. And can be in long run cheaper, as they often do not need as many adds on as Windows products.

No they are not... I had one, for a few months not only was it a pain it proved to be an expensive paperweight (MacBook Pro 2011)... So No Macs really are not superior they just appeal to people who want to waste $$

This is such a stupid article. Maybe it has something to do with wanting to appear rich and also having the money to spend on high end clothing rather than PC users are just "less stylish."

HA! Mac users are hipsters.

People who are trendy and buy labels are more likely to succumb to the Apple hype, that's all. They might have a Rolex as well.
