House Democrats Raise $1.1 Million In 'War On Women' Campaign

Nancy Pelosi Birth Control

First Posted: 03/ 1/2012 5:38 pm Updated: 03/ 1/2012 5:59 pm

WASHINGTON -- House Democrats have raised more than $1.1 million in the past week from their "War on Women" campaign, according to a Thursday email from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

"Thanks to your generous support and efforts, we raised over $1,114,000 for our women’s health rapid response fund and we're only 18,000 signatures away from 500,000 supporters strong on our petition against Republicans’ disgraceful assault on women’s rights," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says in the DCCC email.

"But, the fight goes on," Pelosi says.

The DCCC launched its campaign on Feb. 23. Since then, Democrats have been using it to raise money, collect signatures on petitions and generally fire up their base ahead of elections. The campaign comes in response to the debate raging on Capitol Hill over women's access to birth control that escalated with House Republicans hosting an almost entirely male hearing on the issue in mid-February. House Democrats followed with their own hearing featuring one female witness, Sandra Fluke, who had been turned away from the GOP hearing. On Thursday, the Senate voted down a contentious GOP amendment that would have let employers refuse to cover birth control and other health services for "moral reasons."

In the DCCC email, Pelosi notes that Thursday's Senate vote took place on the first day of Women's History Month. She also calls attention to the "vicious and inappropriate attacks" being leveled at Fluke by Rush Limbaugh this week. The email directs people to a petition that calls on Republican leaders to denounce Limbaugh for his offensive words toward Fluke.

"Join our call to Republican leaders in the House to condemn these vicious attacks on women," Pelosi says. "We couldn’t be more grateful for all that you do to help us in our fight. Your actions today make sure that our voices will never be silenced."

ALL WOMEN SHOULD STOP HAVING SEX RIGHT NOW UNTIL MEN CAN OWN UP THE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THEIR SPERM! WHEN MEN STOP DICTATING TO WOMEN WHAT TO DO WITH OUR BODIES, WE'LL BEGIN HAVING SEX AGAIN. Ladies, do you have my back here?

The GOP is lead but men who are like lemmings. They illustrate no independent thinking and rush over the cliff with whoever is driving the car at the time. It makes you wonder how any party would allow itself to be used the way they are. They parrot what John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and others said years ago because they haven't had a positive, original thought in years.

The entire contraceptive/church/employer issue is the single best recommendation I've heard for single-payer/Medicare for all. We should all take responsibility for our own insurance, so our medical decisions can remain between women and their husbands and doctors. Employers should be out of the picture-their employees' sex lives and other medical issues are none of their business, unless they effect their performance on the job. Government run health care could take a huge part of the expense out of health care by being non-proft, and by having the pricing power 300,000,000 Americans afford. My only fear is that with government sponsored health care, we run the risk of federal GOP legislation like Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's "Rape With A Foreign Object" Bill becoming law on a national scale.

'War on Women' Campaign? What's that all about? $1.1 million. For what? I don't get this at all. But I do know that since World War II, everything we've declared war on has failed. War on Drugs. War on Poverty.

Fluke champions 'Free Contraceptives". Says she can't afford the $3,000 per month she needs to spend on her sexual activities. This is welfare disguised as 'Women' Rights" and Barack Obama approves of this message. Next thing, Fluke will want to drive drunk and expect me to pick up the tab for her car insurance.

Oh, yeah, we should all let politicians and Joe Blow decide what is appropriate for women's health care. Why do you think that HER INSURANCE COVERAGE is any of your business, much less the government's? The insurance company is HAPPY to give her free contraceptives ALL DAY LONG, because it is much much cheaper than all that pre-natal care and hospital delivery if she gets pregnant!!

All you guys seem to think pregnancy is something that's a trivial inconvenience for women, has no effect on her health, her finances, or her life. To you it's no different from an annoying cold, or a hangnail.

The consequence of not having contraception easily available is A 20-YEAR SENTENCE WITH A CHILD TO RAISE! Oh, and before you say she shouldn't have sex if she doesn't want a child - what if she is married???

You believe everything you hear, don't you. Ya don't even question it. You are absolutely sure that Rush would never lie to you just because it makes him money! Get Real!

What if alll the women in the senate decided to have a meeting about requiring all men to have vasectomies by age 40? Oh, and they didn't want to let any men give their opinion about how this would affect their personal and family life. Wouldn't that make you SWEAT?!! How dare anyone decide what I should have to do with my body and my life!

It's way too convenient for these Republican politicians and spokespeople to embrace Rush when he does something that benefits them, or to dismissively call him an "entertainer" when he says something way over the line!!

They are responsible for the way RL "expresses" himself! But they will never take any responsibility for that!!!

And these right-wing women (one on John King just now) dismissively says "this is not about contraception! I have never had any woman tell me in the last 35 years that she wasn't able to find and purchase it!!"

OK, lady - what about the forced medical procedures for women having abortions - nothing to do with contraception??? You can actually say that reproductive choices for women are not being affected by the Republican's platform??

WHAT A LIAR!!!! I am sick and tired of people LYING about the issues to try to misdirect people! How stupid do they think we are???

Rushbo NAILED it. There could NOT have been a more accurate description...NObody on this site would personally pay for Sandra's Contraceptive. But hey, they want the rest of us to pay for it. It's hypocrisy.

And you like the idea of mass abortions better? Or if not, lets for millions of women to bear millions of unwanted pregnancies.. how many dozens of them are you going to be willing to adopt???

.....and now you know the purpose for Ms Fluke's invitation to testify before Nancy Pelosi's committee. FUNDRAISING!
Rush is a pig for sure but Ms Fluke was more than willing to expose her beliefs to the media and anyone else who would listen, and Congressional women were more than happy to have her do so. I am sure they all expect something in return, like perhaps 5 min of fame,a job or campaign funding. They had to know this would create a firestorm. They are all ,what my mother used to call, troublemakers. So let the chips fall where they may, some will get jobs, some will loose jobs and I would not send a dime to any of them.I would use it to pay for my own BC.

"expose" her beliefs? Nice.

My mom was down on the 'feminists' too. Left me entirely unprepared for this kind of regressive attack.

I'm completely shocked that what Ms. Fluke had to say was remotely brave! In my generation, it was irresponsible NOT to use birth control.

Many differing views of what a feminist is. I am so appreciative of the early leaders of the feminist movement .Their voices were responsible for the changes in laws and thinking that allow us to move forward in many areas of life. I hold them directly responsible for guiding me in my educational and many life choices. So I am not exactly "down" on feminism. I am however a very independant person .Very capable of caring for myself . An early goal of feminism,I might add.
Ms Fluke is a Georgetown Law School student ,whose cost ,she admitted are paid by the public. My husband and I paid for our educations and are helping our children with theirs, does it make ANY sense to you that we do not wish to have higher insurance costs for non medical coverage for birth control for people that we are already giving a great deal for her education and also for Planned Parenthood, which she and all women have access to. Once again I will say her appearance before Congress ,at Nancy Pelosis invite, was not to enhance your or my life,as the early feminist leaders did, but to get attention for herself and to raise funds for the the Congresswomen mentioned in the article. As a woman I do not trust anyone who tries to tell me or any woman, that we are weak or needy. We are not!

This is not a religious issue. This is about politicians trying to make medical decisions for people. Catholic dogma should not be required for non-catholics. These are hospitals, universities etc., big businesses that are tax-exempt and get $2 BILLION TAXPAYER DOLLARS EVERY YEAR.

We are not talking about churches, which are already exempt. We are talking about the right of Americans not to have religious prohibitions written into health care laws

"Religious Prohibitions"??? No, The prohibitions come from the State via Penalities, Rules, Regulations.
The separation of Church and State, as stated by TJ, was to PROTECT the Church from The State, not the other way aroung. The State is the (more of the) pernicious entity, as proven by History.

I got an email about 30 minutes ago from Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chair of the Democratic National Committee, including this in the text:

"But right after the vote, the bill's sponsor, Senator Roy Blunt, said, "I'm confident this issue is not over." House Speaker John Boehner immediately backed him up, saying, "It's important for us to win this issue," before hinting that he'd put it to a vote in the House."

She was asking for donation to keep fighting our fight. I followed the link and made a donation.

Perhaps you will want to do the same. Here's the link:

Unless all this personal freedom nonsense is a smoke screen to disguise the fact that their objections are actually just punitive - the nerve of people, having coitus for fun! The word "fornication" is probably just bubbling under in many of their brains, what with its judgmental tone and all.

She was on with Stephen Colbert last week. She's a *practicing* Catholic with five kids.

Take that, Christopublicans.
03:21 PM on 03/02/2012
She actually is a practicing Catholic if she lives a life and promote beliefs opposed to what makes you a Catholic. An example you may understand a little better is if a liberal believed in the Constitution and followed it they wouldn't be a liberal.
