Brady McHale, Teen Firefighter Asks Classmate To Prom Atop Ladder

Prom

If you heard a dull roar emanating from Lower Merion High School on Tuesday, it may have been the collective grumblings of all the senior guys who aren't Brady McHale.

That's because McHale, a volunteer in the Gladwyne Fire Company, set the prom-invitation bar pretty high, standing atop a ladder truck Tuesday outside an LMHS window to show fellow senior Franny deMuzio a sign reading, "Franny—Prom???????"

Around here it would just be considered community relations. I think some folks need to lighten up. First, notice that this is the Huff TEEN PAGE if you're complaining about it not being "news."

When our football team was in the playoffs the buses were given a police escort with lights flashing for several miles as a "send off".

I hope they have a great time.

I'm glad she said yes. I hope they have a wonderful time. Kudos to him for being a volunteer firefighter, by the way.

This could have been done on an out of service truck. Forget who is paying for it. What if an alarm was called in? They'd have to waste time having the kid climb down the ladder and then move the ladder before taking off.

Kudos, you got a date. Next time, think like a fireman should...

As the driver of that ladder truck, it does not take long to get the ladder back in service. That truck was less than a mile away our first in area. And that kid can climb and get down from that ladder quicker than a lot of our members! Good for Brady for being original! Enjoy your prom!

"it does not take long to get the ladder back in service."

Tell that to someone trapped in a fire. Every rescuer knows seconds count.

I'm not dissing on what was done. It just could have been done more responsibly with public safety in the forefront. It seems innocent enough until someone is injured or dies as a result. This time, all went well. Next time it might not.

The public looks up to you.

Good use of taxpayer resources. Obligatory cynicism aside, that's adorable.

Misappropriating county equipment for personal gain. It is unprofessional. It can't be justified by "we work really hard and so we deserve a little extra". I've been a paramedic and a firefighter as well as a combat medic in the military, served in Iraq and did my time. So I think I'm qualified to say shame on you. This is no better than a congressman skimming off the top to line his own pockets for "a job well done". I agree with tribeffl3, if we have the audacity to charge as much to transport someone in need to the hospital, we should be charged as much if not more to do things like this.

As the driver of that Ladder that paticular day for the prom invite who are you to say it's not justified? Your not a member here last I checked so you have no idea what that kid has done for this company since he joined. I guess you were against the Arizona FD taking a ladder truck to a local hospital to fufill a dying boys wish of being a firefighter. Not totally the same but very similar. So yeah he deserved a little extra because he has given all to us.

How are you sure he didn't pay to use the truck? Also he is a volunteer firefighter, he's risking his life foe people, not a stupid congressman.

I agree with jcjksimba
I'm on a department and we put a lot of our time into it and we get something nice back.. that's how it works. Don't be hating on a kid that probably works his but off also it's good public relations for a department giving back to a community. Id like to see you do what we do everyday. So don't complain.
06:17 PM on 03/02/2012
If you really want to "give something nice back" why not give tribeffl3's wife back the $700 you beat them up for the "luxury" of taking them to the hospital. Our department here on L.I. would be fined for "improper use of tax payer funding" .....(it has happened to a dept. adjacent to us...as it should).
07:24 PM on 03/02/2012
You call this giving back?? What exactly did the community get out of this??

Someone does something nice in this world and ya get a bunch of jealous people who probably never had a romantic moment in their life complaining about it. Sad.
07:22 PM on 03/02/2012
I'm all for romance but when they use public services, especially emergency services so someone can be cute then it becomes a problem.
05:55 PM on 03/02/2012
I think it is adorbale. He is a volunteer firefighter. He does not get paid to go into a burning house to save your butt. Its the least we can do to allow him to utilize this in his quest for a prom date.

I hope the tax payers weren't financing this... Some volunteer fire brigades get government money...
05:07 PM on 03/02/2012
I agree. One year my wife was transported by a Fire Department ambulance and we were charged $700. Don't know what the going rate is on a ladder truck.
06:12 PM on 03/02/2012
Isn't that a kick in the pants....first pay taxes to pay for the equipment and staffing then beat you over the head with an EXHORBITANT charge to use the same equipment YOU PAID FOR ALREADY!
