Condoms: The Change That May Make More Young Women Use Them

Money

There's a new study from the Journal of Adolescent Health that shows that teenage girls whose primary source of spending money is a boyfriend are less likely to use condoms by a significant margin. The data which was taken from a longitudinal study of 715 African American teens in Atlanta also shows that young women are less likely to use condoms if their boyfriend has a car.

The idea that women who are financially reliant on their boyfriends would be more susceptible to coercion isn't that surprising. But what's particularly notable about the study is that the socioeconomic status of a teenager's family had no impact on whether they would use condoms. Whether or not a teenager used condoms was all based on their personal "human and financial capital," which the study defines as level of education and employment status. This jibes with another young women and condom study that showed college age women were less likely to use condoms as their freshman year went on if they had lower high-school GPAs or lower socioeconomic status.

There's evidence that if teenage boys are given greater access to condoms they are more likely to use them. But the same doesn't hold for teenage girls. The study from the Journal of Adolescent Health points to a randomized experiment in Africa, which showed that "providing money to young women decreases sexual risk-taking." Which is to say: the way to get these young women to protect their sexual health is not through free condoms or a stern talking-to. The way to reach them might be as simple as giving them cold, hard, cash.

A very interesting piece. Im in my early twenties and have never bought condoms before. I just never really considered it something I would need to do. I am wondering how normal it is for young women to buy condoms regularly. If its the case that buying condoms is unsual then the results of the study should not be considered relevant to the young female population as a whole.
I do think there is an obvious correlation between socioeconomic status and healthy behavior. That's not really anything ground-breaking.

I don't care if they use protection or not. If a woman happens to get pregnant and deliberately keeps a child she cannot afford, especially if the father does not wish this fetus kept, then she is on her own. I just don't think she should then go on the dole. Child bearing must be for people who can afford to properly care for a child. Don't be having children you can't afford it or complain that it is difficult to raise a child without two caring people working like the devil to care for the children. If a person doesn't believe in abortion that is a person's problem not society. Look at the way the black church seems to encourage their girls to have babies. Then all those babies go on the dole. Just ridiculous.

I found this funny since I am getting ready to meet a guy from a dating site who doesn't drive and works only part time, which is fine by me. Either a woman is driven by love or money. I can make money.

And so it continues .... the female is supposed to supply the male (who has the penis, I might add) with condoms. The saga continues that the male has no responsibility to procreation .... just the female. The consistent wording of "Woman's use of condoms, etc." reflects a lack of knowledge on who wears the condom. Anyone have an anatomy book for the writers of these articles and conversations.

Please understand the male is not trying to have children but to have pleasure. In fact the pressure is on the female to control herself or make sure contraception is used. Unfair but true and that is not going to change anytime soon.
02:11 PM on 04/10/2012
If the "male" didnt want to have children he should USE CONDOMS! The incidence of pregnancy due to failure of hormonal birth control is low as is pregnancy due to rape/incest. So the rate of unwanted pregnancy rate is due to not using condoms or using them incorrectly, and you have NO IDEA how many dudes dont know how to use condoms correctly. So guys really have to start wearing condoms every time they have sex. Not to mention it's the only thing that helps to prevent BOTH partners against STIs.

Honestly, after a re-read, your post makes NO sense whatsoever. None.

WHY ISNT THIS TITLED HOW TO GET YOUNG MEN, ADULT MEN, OLDER MEN TO WEAR CONDOMS!! DONT THEY WEAR THEM!!!!! (HATE these articles because they imply the onus is still on women to get men to wear the only contraception available to them, ugh)

Until men start getting pregnant, the onus will ALWAYS be on women.
02:13 PM on 04/10/2012
Yes, as I clearly stated, guys dont feel they have responsibility to prevent pregnancy. Thus there will always be dudes out there complaining that some woman has "made" him pay child support when he didnt want to. Oh woe is him. NOT.

The incidence of pregnancy due to failure of hormonal birth control is low as is pregnancy due to rape/incest. All men should wear condoms EVERY time they have sex, period, end of story. The rate of unwanted pregnancies would drop significantly. It is because men are absolved of having sex responsibly that the rate is so high to begin with.

Am I reading this right? If we pay young women for sex they are more likely to use condoms??

LOL. Yes! The takeaway sentence is: "The way to reach them might be as simple as giving them cold, hard, cash."

Unreal. Just print more money and give it away. SImply unreal. What kind of person even suggests this nonsense?

"The idea that women who are financially reliant on their boyfriends would be more susceptible to coercion isn't that surprising."

Excellent! We men just can't hear enough about evil, oppressive men and innocent, victim women. I personally can't remember a time when every sitcom, advert or "news" article didn't portray men as evil and women as good, or men as buffonish louts and women as aristocratic brilliance incarnate.

Be that as it may, are you telling me we need to pony up cash and hand it to women for condoms? So virtually every charity is a womens only charity, 80% of taxes goes to women exclusively. A recent article right here on huff women says women make something like 85% of all purchases. There are quotas for women in education and employment even though women get the most degrees and there are less unemployed women than men. Toss in diamonds, rubies, gold, jewelry and countless other gifts women constantly recieve.

You're telling me it's still not enough? We now need to hand cash directly to girls/women so they can have protected sex? Perhaps you ladies missed the memo? Fifty years of all those "free" yum-yums for women have left us 17 trillion dollars in debt. The well is empty.

The post was definitely a rant, but as a man, I've been feeling a bit beat up lately (lots of male bashing) and empathize with his frustration.

Why don't they decide how to get the men to use condoms?

Too complicated for them to unroll properly - and they won't ask for directions

Actually, it was stated in the article that "there's evidence that if teenage boys are given greater access to condoms they are more likely to use them," so they they already have an idea of how to get boys to use them. I think the reason they are focusing on women now is because they believe they have already increased the usage of condoms by men to as high as it's likely to go. (Just my guess)

However, I would urge readers of this article to check out the sources, as some of the methods of gathering data mentioned in the studies' (is that the right grammar?) don't seem to be scientifically rigorous.

"I think the reason they are focusing on women now is because they believe they have already increased the usage of condoms by men to as high as it's likely to go. (Just my guess)"

That cant possibly be the reason. The reason is simply because women are still expected to be gatekeepers and men are not expected to be protective of the gate, only women. This article is drivel.

Anyone else here confused as I am as to why the researchers are trying to figure out how to get more young WOMEN to use condoms? The emphasis on the females and not the males is illogical, incomprehensible, unrealistic, and unfair, which would go a long way to explain why trying to get more females to use condoms is so difficult.

Because the goal is to get more PEOPLE to use condoms. What they tried first (as described in the article...) is to provide more access to condoms, which made men more willing to use them. But women were NOT more willing or less willing to use them when they were available.

The reason that they want more women to be willing to use them is because IF she meets a man who is less willing to use a condom, she needs to be able to tell him no, which she is apparently less likely to do if she derives more value from being with that man...

I cannot quite get my head around the arguement that providing boys with condoms gets more of them to use them, but giving them to girls doesn't.

Is the arguement that boys only accept free condoms from strange third parties, and won't accept free condoms from their girlfriends?

Lets be real. If you give girls cash, they will not spend it on condoms. They will buy other stuff they always wanted. Maybe we need to focus on helping young girls self esteem. I mean speaking up for yourself, with holding if you're uncomfortable the situation, etc. My generation has more info and access to birth control than any other before it but we our society still seems to have failed in stopping teen pregnancy and the spread of STDs. I don't mean this in a religious sense but I think the problem is moral.

Let's be real. The result of the study was not that women would buy condoms if they had money, but that they would be more willing to USE condoms if they weren't dependent upon their boyfriend for their money.

let's be real--this generation has NOT has info and access to birth control. the abstinence only jesus freaks have caused more teen pregnancy and STDs than ever before. and congress wants to end coverage of birth control pills too! what world are you living in?

the problem isn't moral. it's logical. people are illogical when it comes to sex. and you're the perfect example.

So you follow up let's be real with that comment? This generation has has more information and more access than any generation before it.

Let's be real, unicorns can hurt you if you don't watch for them while taking gold from the Leprechaun. See how putting those three words at the beginning of the sentence doesn't make the sentence any more valid?

How could anyone conduct a study on a very narrow sample -- African American teens in Atlanta -- make assertions for a very broad group -- all women?

That is the name of the game in the "Social Sciences" (Taking small amounts of dubious data and drawing big conclusions)

I'm not sure I buy into the argument that "It's always the boy who does not want to use condoms and pressures the girl into not using them." I know plenty of females who actually have wanted to get pregnant and the guys didn't and in those cases the male was pushing for using birth-control.

With current child support laws which grossly favor the female, and the number of crazy females out there in general, most 'sane males' are very much ***FOR*** condoms and birth control.
