It's a real-life adventure that James Cameron has been planning for a long time -- and one that may be only weeks away from coming true.
Sources are reporting that the 57-year-old is making final preparations to dive the Mariana Trench (a.k.a. the deepest part of the world's oceans) and descend nearly 36,000 feet in a custom-made submarine. Cameron first made public his intentions to make the trip back in September 2010. If successful, he would be the first person to do so since 1960, when a scientist and navy lieutenant descended five hours in the submersible "Trieste" to 35,797 feet.
