New York University Won't Remove Chick-Fil-A, Despite Protest And 10K Signatures On Petition

NEW YORK -- Hillary Dworkoski thinks it's ridiculous that there's a Chick-fil-A located on New York University's campus.

Dworkoski, a freshman at NYU, launched a petition to get rid of the Chick-fil-A on campus -- the only Chick-fil-A location in Manhattan -- because of the restaurant chain's financial support of anti-gay groups.

"NYU prides itself on being a diverse, open and inclusive campus community," Dworski writes in her petition. "That's one of the major reasons why I enrolled at NYU as a freshman last fall. Unfortunately, maintaining a contract with an anti-gay vendor like Chick-fil-A undermines what makes this university so great."

Dworkoski said she got upset after reading several articles about donations from Chick-fil-A's charitable arm, WinShape, to anti-gay groups. In 2009, WinShape donated $1.7 million to conservative groups that actively work against LGBT rights and marriage equality laws. WinShape gave more than $3 million since 2003 to groups and campaigns with anti-gay agendas.

WinShape has also explicitly stated they do not allow "homosexual couples" at a retreat center they run.

Dworkoski says all this seemed to contradict NYU's ranking as one of the most LGBT friendly campuses in the nation, and she decided to take action.

So far, Dworkoski's online petition has gained more than 10,000 signatures. This is the first time she's gotten involved in any kind of activism, but she says she has found a welcomed reception by students and Change.org, where she is hosting her petition.

"For the most part, many students have gotten behind this issue really quickly," Dworkoski told The Huffington Post. "However, there are a few students who want to keep Chick-fil-A because they love their chicken and waffle fries and can't seem to give them up."

However, NYU doesn't have any plans to kick Chick-fil-A off its campus any time soon.

Officials with NYU told HuffPost their process for dealing with these kinds of petitions involves going through the University Senate. As students joined Dworkoski to protest the Chick-fil-A at the dormitory it's located in Thursday afternoon, Albert Cotugno, chair of the Student Senators Council, emailed students to say tell them they voted not to remove the fast food joint.

"The SSC also believes there is a fundamental difference between personal boycott and institutional prohibition," Cotugno said in his statement. "To ban any entity from campus for ideological reasons is, in most every case, to limit freedom of expression. … After extensive deliberation, the Student Senators Council agreed that there was insufficient evidence at this time to justify a ban of Chick-Fil-A."

Philip Lentz, Director of Public Affairs for NYU, insisted the school is not giving any money directly to Chick-fil-A.

"The University does not have a direct relationship with Chick-Fil-A," Lentz told HuffPost. "ARAMARK is the University’s restaurant vendor and Chick-Fil-A is licensed by ARAMARK to lease a restaurant on NYU’s Greenwich Village campus."

NYU isn't the first college to have students protest for the removal of a Chick-fil-A location.

According to Change.org, students at the University of North Texas, the University of New Orleans, Mississippi State University, Gainesville State College, Indiana University and Texas Tech University have all launched petitions like Dworkoski's.

Earlier this week, students at Northeastern University in Boston were successful in getting their school to cancel plans of a campus-based Chick-fil-A location.

Chick-fil-a is a great business. And they SHOULD back groups that work to help homosexuals go straight.
10:44 PM on 08/05/2012
NYU students -- don't eat there. I think it'd be better if you left the business open and let it slowly run dry.
02:09 PM on 08/01/2012
This is BS. I support gay marriage and I now refuse to eat there but that is MY personal choice. I refuse to eat there not because what they said this is America they have a right to say and think what they want. I think people who want to punish others for their views might as well form their own hate group.

Instead I won't eat there because the money I spend might be donated to groups I disagree with. Something I think the media is overlooking. It's been turned into a free speech issue by the media and imo it didn't start out as one.

BTW.. I'm all for gay marriage... I think they deserve to be just as miserable as traditional couples! ;)

Remember... Freedom of Speech is only relevant if they believe the same way you do.... smh

Listen up...Everyone has a right to their opinion. These people choose to support traditional marriage and that's their right. You cannot force someone to accept your lifestyle. Trying to boycott this establishment because they dont accept gay marriage is ridiculous. You dont like it, dont buy their food. ONCE AGAIN...you cannot force someone to accept your lifestyle.

No one is telling the owner of Chick-fil-A to accept their lifestyle! The students are saying that a university that is know for it's diversity and acceptance of all lifestyles is being hypocritical by allowing a business that does not meet the university's model to exist there! After all, the students are the ones who are paying tuition so shouldn't they have a say?
05:20 PM on 07/31/2012
so they should not eat there... this is AMERICA... everyone wants "freedom of speech" until it infringes upon their own beliefs....
02:11 PM on 08/01/2012
They 100% have a say! They have a say with their money. They can choose to not eat there same as I have but that is all the say they should have.
04:59 PM on 07/26/2012
Does this particular Chick-Fil-A have signs posted saying that they won't serve gay people? I haven't seen any on the one's near where I live, so I just wondered................
02:08 AM on 07/30/2012
Do you need a sign to understand they donate to groups who are for banning gay equality and marriage? Would you need a sign to know the KKK are against black people? I'm just wondering because the KKK near me never hung a sign up either..

I'm ashamed to say I received my Master's from NYU. This is disgusting! Chick-fil-A-Hates-Gays needs to go NOW!
05:23 PM on 07/31/2012
Freedom of speech is only good when it is what you believe.... sad really... so don't eat there.. but why dictate where someone who does like a chick fil a sammich from being able to buy one... this is Supposed to be America!

I weary of someone being called "anti-gay" because they support a traditional marriage stance. Because you support one thing does not mean you hate another. There was nothing hateful in the statement by Mr. Cathy--nothing. He is allowed his opinion the same as you or me. I support traditional marriage, but I have several gay friends I love dearly. I do not agree with their choice, but I still love them and socialize with them. It can be done. I don't know about New York, but in my city, Chick-Fil-A hires many college students. I know of one student in particular who has risen above serious poverty because of the way Chick-Fil-A has worked with her schedule to allow her to work and take classes. The restaurants are clean, the employees are friendly and they serve a good product. The vehement comments on this post only illustrate hatred seems to work in reverse. Instead of spending so much time on a boycott that may work at NYU but not across the country (boycotts rarely work), spend the time you are spewing your own hatred by working at a soup kitchen or helping to teach a child to read on a weekly basis. I weary of "both" sides of all these issues spending so much on selfish interests when there are people in real need.
02:24 PM on 07/22/2012
I'm interested to know how your "friends" would feel if you donated large amounts of money to political groups whose mission is to bar LGBT from having equal rights in this country... It's funny how you speak of people in real need as if the LGBT community aren't in need.
04:25 PM on 07/22/2012
Yes, the LGBT community has sometimes been horrendously bullied, but they do not have to sit at the back of a bus, use a separate water fountain, or be denied entrance to college. They hold jobs and make as a group more money than the average middle class person. Boycotting a restaurant because a man holds certain beliefs is not the way to get themessage across. It only makes people mad and few listen. Why is it that you can say and believe anything you want and it's not hatred, but it is when someone disagrees with you even when it is civilly done? That continues to mystify me. Chick-Fil-A is entitled to the same free trade that say, Ben & Jerry's, is. I don't agree with B&J's politics or the organizations to whom they give money---but that doesn't keep me from eating their ice cream nor does it get me on the bandwagon to have their stores banned. I don't think it serves any purpose. The children in my community are desperate for help that is far beyond what the LGBT community says it needs. I'm sorry, but having rights denied because you are LGBT is NOT the same as living in poverty or illiteracy, having empty cupboards because dad has spent the little bit of family income they have on drugs or having a parent gunned down. The uphill fight we have here is life and death, not marriage. It's not the same at all.

They need to picket in front of the location every day. Many students will find it hard to cross a picket line, and eventually economics will force Chik-Fil-A to remove themselves.

"NYU prides itself on being a diverse, open and inclusive campus community," Dworski writes in her petition.
But not if she has anything to say about it!! All must adhere to the homosexual agenda, or be excluded!

Why do you people always get this backwards?!? The question is why do some people work so hard and spend so much money on propaganda to spew hatred and ignorance about people who don't adhere to their "anti-" agenda? That's what Chick-Fil-A did....ya know, corporations are people, too. If they hadn't participated in a hate campaign they wouldn't be in the news and no one would be boycotting them. I don't know what you mean by "adhere to the homosexual agenda", but I certainly don't "adhere" to it. I also don't adhere to agendas to spread fear and hate either, and I don't adhere to supporting those who do....against anyone.

He did none of that. There was no hate campaign, and you cannot cite a single phrase or sentence that illustrates hate!
You certainly do adhere to the homosexual agenda, by demanding that the company be ejected! And your hatred is clear, through your use of ill-considered phrases such as "..spew hatred and ignorance..", when you have no proof.

Change that word homosexual to heterosexual in your statement and you have the pot calling the kettle black. However, going the extra mile, Chick-fil-a has helped finance the exclusion of other people who do not adhere to the heterosexual agenda. I, like others, won't buy a product to help produce profits that are used for hate campaigns.

What is the heterosexual agenda? Might it be to preserve the family? Might it be to prevent the further erosion of sexual mores? No hatred comes out of the heterosexual agenda, but let one person object to the homosexual agenda, and they are attacked viciously!

how about everyone just get over it. People can have their own opinions. I am anti-gay, but everyone is allowed their own opinion. I am sick and tired of the gays, atheists, etc getting everything they want because it offends them. Maybe what they do offends me but that doesn't matter? The world is so screwed up.

Agreed. Chick-fil-a should get over it and spend their profits on things that help people, not hurt them.

Maybe they are hoping to save babies by giving people the chance to adopt! Oh, gee that is not allowed in this tolerant society! Dave Thomas has helped thousands of children find loving homes!
The intolerance is on the so-called tolerant liberal agenda! Whenever something DOES NOT FIT THE MISSION, boom, it needs to be removed! This is truly hysterical!

Isn't that exactly what Chick-fil-a is doing? "Whenever something DOES NOT FIT THE MISSION, boom, it needs to be removed!" They are spending big bucks and time to make sure what does not fit their mission is removed. boom.

The only way to get rid of Chick Fil-A is if nobody purchased their food that they would remove themselves from NYU. Does Chick Fil-A at NYU hire openly gay students? Are they adhering to non-discrimination policies?
