Sharia Law Campaign Begins As Muslim Group Fights Bans

Posted: 03/ 1/2012 11:01 pm Updated: 03/ 2/2012 11:22 am

Sharia Law

After heated debates in two dozen states over banning Sharia law, the legal code of Islam, a national Islamic group is beginning a multi-million dollar effort to explain how Sharia applies to the lives of American Muslims.

The Islamic Circle of North America, a New York-based group, is spending $3 million on its Defending Religious Freedom campaign, which kicks off Monday and explains Sharia law and common misunderstandings.

The effort includes billboards, TV and radio ads in 25 major cities, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, in addition to town hall meetings and seminars on university campuses led by Muslim academics and activists. Each directs audiences to a website and manned hotline, 1-855-Shariah.

The campaign is a response to efforts to ban Sharia law over the last two years in state legislatures and on ballot initiatives, said Naeem Baig, vice president of public affairs for Islamic Circle of North America. Republican presidential candidates also have raised the Sharia debate.

Tennessee, Louisiana and Arizona have passed laws banning judges from consulting Sharia, or more generally, foreign or religious laws. Oklahoma voters approved a ban on Sharia law in 2010, but a judge blocked the rule after a Muslim man filed a religious freedom lawsuit. Legislatures in South Carolina and Florida are considering anti-Sharia bills.

"It's a small minority of Islamophobes that are pushing the anti-Sharia bills, but it's becoming mainstream. Now, even presidential hopefuls like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are talking about Sharia," said Baig. "We see it not only an issue of Sharia but an issue of broader religious freedom."

Sharia law attacks come mostly from those fearing radical Muslims are introducing extreme interpretations of Islamic law, such as those practiced in Afghanistan under the Taliban, into American society.

Baig said comments by Gingrich helped spur the campaign. The GOP contender said in South Carolina in January that he would support a Muslim-American president only if that person denounced Sharia. In a 2010 speech in Washington he summarized the anti-Sharia movement: "Stealth jihadis use political, cultural, societal, religious, intellectual tools" as a way to "replace Western civilization with a radical imposition of Sharia,” Gingrich said.

Sharia law guides Islamic life, from praying five times a day to fasting during the holy month of Ramadan and abstaining from pork, alcohol and sex outside of marriage. Sharia has also been cited as a justification for violent, sometimes deadly punishments for minor crimes in majority-Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia.

The Defending Religious Freedom website says "American Muslims do not seek to have Sharia penal laws introduced in the U.S." and are more interested in the role of Sharia in "praying, fasting and alms-giving, as well as divorce, burials and inheritance."

That lines up with how religious laws, including Jewish and Islamic ones, are already interpreted in U.S. courts when it comes to marriage, divorce, wills and estate contracts, said Marc Stern, an expert in religious law at the American Jewish Committee.

"Judges aren't really having any trouble at at all" when religious laws and secular laws conflict, Stern said. Judges have refused the requests of Orthodox Jews to enforce laws on religious divorce, for example. In a case from 2007, a Muslim man in Maryland cited religious law when he wanted to give almost nothing to his wife upon divorce. The court refused to recognize the religious law and said the couple had to divide their "marital property," including the husband's pension of $1 million and the couples' properties valued at more than $1 million.

"From a public relations perspective, I think this campaign may be a mistake," said Stern. "All this campaign may do it provide ammunition to the other side."

Billboards will go up in 25 cities, including New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Washington, D.C, Atlanta, Miami, New Jersey, Detroit and Hartford. The image above, provided by the Islamic Circle of North America, shows how the billboards will look.

The Defending Religious Freedom campaign began quietly last month in San Francisco and Kansas City. It has already stirred local backlash. Stop the Islamization of Nations, a group led by New York-based activist Pamela Geller, has purchased anti-Sharia billboards in Kansas City. Geller says on her blog, Atlas Shrugs, that her group will launch anti-Sharia billboards and radio ads in other cities.

Mohamed Magid, the president of the nation's largest Islamic umbrella group, the Islamic Society of North America, applauded the Islamic Circle of North America's "Defending Religious Freedom" title, but said the word Sharia tends to be misunderstood.

"There are certain words that, if people use them in the Arabic language it becomes a dirty word, but if people take the time to understand what Sharia is about, they would not have a problem," said Magid. "When people talk about criminal law in the Quran, none of the Muslims say they want that legal code in America. What we are saying is that in the private life of a Muslim, nobody should impose on them how to conduct a marriage or preside over a funeral. Instead of using the word Sharia, we should use the words 'Muslim values' or 'Islamic values.'"

Other major Muslim organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations and Muslim Public Affairs Council, have strongly opposed Sharia bans. A smaller group, the American Islamic Leadership Coalition, offered its support to an anti-Sharia bill in Michigan last summer.

The group said in a statement that the legislation would not "adversely impact the free exercise of our personal pietistic observance of Islam" and added, "All people of faith need the government to protect their right to peaceful assembly, mediation and arbitration free of coercion."

A Small group of men know as National Socialists took over Germany and were good friends with Muslums. So don't be to sure they can not take over this country. Many countries were taken over recenty by Muslums. And 500,000 Christian fled Iraq. And you have not counted other counties Christians and other groups.People are already leaving some cities to get away from Muslums here. They are more powerful the Muslums they are very anti Jewish and American and UK.. And they will control the US. The German used arm bands. The Muslums
use Muslum dress to take over and drive fear in people. So If Christian people look like knights how would they feel.

Sharia law means Muslum women have no rights. The husband keeps all the money.
So Muslum women be careful what you wish for you have less rights in a lot of cases. Even if they have some rights they are not equal like US law.

jake481,
You are very naive to believe that the US constitution cannot change 100 years from now, but believe what you want or I guess don't believe in anything, as you currently do. We in America just care for today and don't think about the future until it is too late, everyone is full of greed and this is why we are so messed up financially, politically and who knows how else... When we are no longer the majority in this country, anything is possible... God please bless America, we need your help badly!

I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." - Jefferson to Dr. Benjamin Rush, September 23, 1800 1 this cult and its false prophet has no place on American soil.

What a mess. Secular law is the law of the land. Religion provided some good legal guidelines 1300-2500 years ago, but this is the 21st century, already!

The elements of Sharia they talk about here "praying, fasting and alms-giving, as well as divorce, burials and inheritance."--are fine. Just about none of these has anything to do with civil or penal law.

If you want Koranic or Biblical law reflected in your personal dealings...great put it in a civil contract, pre-nup or whatever. If you want you divorce agreement to be shaped by Koranic justice after that point (by letting the wife take with her property she held before the marriage), that is your business.

And before we get to idiocy about honor killings--this is far beyond the purview of what is discussed here. That and remember that the Bible/Torah sometimes calling for stoning of people for extra-martial sex. This is why we keep religion out of civil administration.

I am not worried about a handful of people advocating for civil agreements to be shaped by Sharia. I am yahoos running for Congress and the Presidency thumping their Bibles and saying saying that there should be no division between church and state.

The problem is that leftist judges will consult Sharia law to justify a man raping his ex-wife (as a New Jersey judge did). And women will be intimidated into accepting Sharia judgments (as they are in England).

That is the most insane thing I have ever heard.  Look people use the Bible to justify crimes committed in the US all the time.  "Look at this sacred text!"  is not a defense in country.  Follow up that case there, Tex.
I think you also need to look at the composition of the high court before making whack comments.  You are really out of touch.

Any one who lives in the US is subject to US laws. I'd like one example of so called"honor killings" being unpunished in the US due to "sharia law". It's never happened, and never will. The sharia law issue is completely fabricated. Anyone worried about it being accepted in the US is delusional. Our Constitution is very specific about this. We are just as likely to be subjected to Martian Law, start worrying and lobbying against that. "Creeping Sharia" is a concept designed to frighten Americans who don't understand our existing laws in the same way Jews were once suspected of being a "fifth column" who could never assimilate into american culture due to Jewish Law and the same as the belief that Catholics couldn't hold office in America because they were viewed as "papists" who answered to no one but the Pope. This argument has been played out over and over again in America and everyone has been proven to be nothing more than the arguments of closed minded people who don't understand the power of assimilation and the nature of immigration.

Sharia Law does not exist in the US legal system. It never will. Just like Jewish Laws aren't part of the American Legal system, or Catholic laws. Anyone who is scared of sharia Law "creeping into the US" is being manipulated because no one, who is the least bit well educated about the American Legal System, should be concerned.

Well I kind of agree with you. We do have people in this election, and in elections for congress, saying that "Christian Law" (which is their whack private interpretation of a few verses) should be law of the Land. You basic contention that this is driven by Islamophobia...yes!
01:08 AM on 10/24/2012
It may not be mentioned in our US legal system but it exists in many households across the country.

Muslims who want Sharia Law should go to an Islamic country to live, they should not live here in America where we do not have or want Sharia Law.

Sharia Law is not going to be part of the American Legal system, stop worrying. There was a time when people said Jews couldn't be American citizens because of Jewish Law. There were plenty of Americans who believed Catholics couldn't be President because they were beholden to the Pope. It's a long line of Religious intolerance and the people who rally against religious acceptance have been proven wrong every time.

I wanted to read and see what exactley they are asking for. After reading this blog, I have found nothing to change my strong held belief that this is nothing more than a way to open the door to introducing full Islamic law into the United States. After 9/11 and reading numerous stories from obroad and about the two sisters WHO were raised in America by their father who is muslim and taken Sharia Law into his own hands and MURDERED his own flesh and blood because THEY chose to see someone who was NOT muslim. To this day the father is protected by his muslim family from U.S. Justice that states that each citizen shall be not be deprived of individual liberty and protection under our laws. Those daughters were people who had dreams and loved their family but was quickly discarded like a piece of unwanted trash. You then wonder WHY those of us who grew up in America prior to 9/11 would EVER question your faith and further more your INTENTIONS? You want to pray, go ahead! No one is stopping you. When you want special treatment by implenting your own law side by side of the U.S. constitution you are then a domestic threat. Those who took an oath to uphold this constition if they wish to live otherwise there's the door buddy, no one is stopping you from leaving either!

ROTFLMAO.
You said, "this is nothing more than a way to open the door to introducing full Islamic law into the United States." Wow, this is paranoid beyond all belief and just Islamophobic.

Okay, do a handful of nutty yahoos want to implement full blown Sharia Law ala Iran or Saudia Arabia? Sure. But they ain't gonna get it.

Muslims are 2% of the population. People advocating full acceptance of Sharia are an extreme minority of that. Like all religious minorities, the average Muslim LOVES separation of church and state and LOVES the liberties afforded by separation of church and state.
You sound as paranoid as people who worry about the Jews (again about 2%) "taking over."

I am more worried about Christians, 80% of the population, pushing religious law. Thankfully most of my fellow Americans (most of whom are Christians) are not Bible thumpers and respect the separation of church and state.

I cannot understand why anyone feels that there is a need to "include" Sharia law within the legal system of the US. We have an excellent Constitution, Bill of Rights, and judicial system, and while they are not perfect, our founding fathers provided for a system through which we can correct what needs to be corrected. Yes, this country was built on the concept of religious freedom, but freedom was the key there. How can we protect the freedom of our citizens if we choose to adopt laws which restrict the rights of females, gays, children, or those who choose to leave a specific religion. These aspects of Sharia law are in opposition to existing law, thus they have no place here. If you want to live in a place where you are free to murder your teenager when they reject your religion, then you need to move to a different country. We don't care whom you worship, or what day of the week, or what you wear while you do so, but once observation of your religion infringes on the rights of others, including your own family, you lose the right to freedom of your religion. Period. NOT IN MY COUNTRY.

Most Americans are of the opinion that everything we need to know about Islam and Sharia Law we learned on September 11th, 2001. I'm not sure how much Muslims spent on that first lesson but I think I speak for the vast majority of Americans in saying, 'Thanks but we have had all the Islam education we need.'

We have a Commander in Chief who bows to Saudi King, whose subjects committed crimes of 9/11 and who finances terrorist groups around the world and spreading this supremacist ideology around mosques in North America, Europe and Australia! Barak Hussein Obama also extolls Islam and Koran, while dissing Bible (Hebrew and Christian), and caters to Islamists, such as Taliban and Muslim Brotherhood, thus endangering not only US soldiers, but also US citizens and entire Western civilization.

Islam is incompatible with either US Constitution and/or Universal Declaration of Human Rights and until it REFORMS it has no place in any civilized society. Unlike other religions, which are compatible with our SECULAR laws, Islam does not recognize the separation of State and Religion or human rights, especially not freedom of speech of First Amandement. that is why CAIR and OIC are working on banning free speech regarding facts about Islam at the UN and in US they are using stealth tactics of those billboards to make believe that Islam is just like ANY other religions, which is NOT true!

Islam is a supremacist ideology similar to a Nazi supremacist ideology of delusional Jew hatred, which is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is no coincidence that Amin al Husseyni, the Mufti of Jerusalem spend WWII egging Hitler on to hurry up extermination of Jews in Europe and come to Palestine, and he also organized two Muslim SS brigades.

Vlasta, you have just a few errors in your post. The previous president was actually much closer to Saudi Arabia than President Obama is, so, as usual, Obama is moving us in the correct direction. Also, President Obama respects all of God's revelations especially the Bible. Because he is so public about his respect for all of God's Holy books and all of God's people, he has actually made our service members and citizens more safe than they would be if he spewed your rhetoric.
In addition, the US Constitution and the Declaration of Human Rights are 'Johnny come latelies' compared to Judaic and Islamic law and are actually based on the rights guaranteed by Jewish and Islamic jurisprudence.
Finally, although Islam is not a supremacist ideology, God's law is destined to overcome evil. God is with those who live in peace and justice.
02:47 AM on 06/28/2012
Salvador, I dont see how apologizing for America's past which Obama has said, steering us in the right direction, islam means "submit" if you read the koran it says to kill anyone who does not "submit" you dont see in the middle east where islam is in rule that christians and jews dont have any rights like they do here Obama is a muslim pure and simple it will come to this country because of people such as yourself misunderstanding of the islam way. islam is a violent religion and has no place in this country the problem is when people came here to have a better life THEY CHANGED to live here now the COUNTRY is changing to have them live here and you mention God 's law is destined to overcome evil your right but it doesnt mean we just sit here and let islam enter into this country.
