'The Lorax', 'GCB', 'Glee' And More: The Week In Ouch

Week In Ouch

First Posted: 03/ 3/2012 12:36 am Updated: 03/ 3/2012 12:36 am

It's Saturday, and we spent all week sifting through reviews and collecting the snarkiest critiques of blunders and missteps in the latest movies and TV shows for the fifth installment of our "Week In Ouch" series.

This week, we've rounded up reviews from Vulture, The New York Post, our friends at HuffPost and more to get their (at times) over the top take on new movies and TV shows like "The Lorax", "Project X" and "GCB."

Let us know which films and shows you think deserved the bash, and which ones you think critics should ease up on.

HuffPost Thought "GCB" Was Like A Really Bad Cartoon

Based on the book "Good Christian B****es," ABC's GCB (the network swapped "B****es for Belles, in case your interested), didn't impress HuffPost's Maureen Ryan.

Here's what she had to say:

Things like the cleavage scene make it all the more jarring when "GCB" tries to create warm, human moments, which the scattered show doesn't do anything to earn. The show can't really decide on a tone -- is it a cartoonish, silly soap with undertones of dislike for women, Christians and Texans, or a mildly absurd, comedic drama about a formerly rich person seeking forgiveness?

I had a great outing seeing The Lorax over the weekend with my 5 year old. He has had this story memorized inside and out for at least a year. The critic is almost humorous with his perspective. I don't think this is intended to make a political statement. But it does reflect the message of the book very well, that "UNLESS someone like you care a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better its not." They do a good job showing a dreamy perfect world deteriorate by the way of a greedy industry and yet, for the children, do not villainize the Onceler, but instead humanize him.

I took my adult daughter and two grandsons, 14 and 8, to see the Lorax and we all loved it. We'd recommend it to everyone.

Conservative panic over the Lorax is a bonus to any film.

My inlays took my daughter to see the Lorax and all the shows were sold out way ahead...they got in just in time to a later show and loved the movie...kids and Dr. suess...no brainer there...

I was so sick of getting very intrusive and annoying full-page Lorax ads, I had to activate my popup blocker. If you try to force a movie on someone, they will not go to see it, or at least I won't.

Theodore G.'s family didn't even wait until he was cold in his grave before completely selling out his reputation. This "Lorax" is just one more monery-grubbing act akin to urinating on his grave and place in history. Shame on all of them.

I just saw Project X and thought it was quite good. It's pretty unsurprising that a pretentious snob who makes a living criticizing others work wouldn't enjoy the film. Go jack off to The Artist.

Project X was exactly what it was marketed as. A movie about a party and the three guys that threw it. Nothing more, nothing less. I got what I expected and I enjoyed it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with some mindless, stupid, fun every once in a while. People need to get off their high horse and enjoy things for what they are. An in-depth story is not necessary for all movies.

The HuffPost author needs to review grammar. "In case your interested," should be, "In case you're interested." This comment is directly below the GCB photo.

And why wasn't the new TV series Awake reviewed?

It has an innovative premise with wife and son killed in a car crash. . .

Then wife is alive for half the day and son alive the other half but not sure which half is reality and which is a dream state.

I thought the pilot was very good. . . so the series probably won't last long since it isn't formulaic.

Thanks for bring this up. Personally, I was very aseptically at first, but I was surprised that I actually had to think and make connections on my own while watching the show.

Not the least bit interested in anything Kristin Chenoweth is in. That Betty Boop on helium sounding voice grates on my nerves.

I could have saved everyone a lot of time.... If it's American television, it's probably bad.

American movie? Rarely not bad.

American movie based on a television series? Most definitely bad.

I agree both are great, and The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is one of the greatest films of all time -- but it is most definitely not a good example of a "great American film." Italian director, Italian production.

Hence the "rarely"... There's always an exception. But anything really good is indeed the exception.

OK... I'll back-peddle... Some non-network TV can be good.

I'd wager that the best TV shows in the history of the medium are American.
