U.S. Pet Spending Surpasses $50 Billion For First Time In 2011

Spending On Pets

First Posted: 03/ 2/2012 4:24 pm Updated: 03/ 4/2012 10:47 am

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Americans spent $50.96 billion on their pets in 2011.

That's an all-time high and the first time in history more than $50 billion has gone to the dogs, cats, canaries, guppies and the like, the American Pet Products Association said in a report issued Thursday.

Food and vet costs accounted for about 65 percent of the spending. But it was a service category — one that includes grooming, boarding, pet hotels, pet-sitting and day care — that grew more than any other, surging 7.9 percent from $3.51 billion in 2010 to $3.79 billion in 2011.

APPA President Bob Vetere said 2012 should be another banner year for services, predicting it would grow 8.4 percent to an estimated $4.11 billion in 2012.

Owners are taking care of their pets, said Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, a San Diego veterinarian and author of pawcurious.com. "They are planning ahead. When they go on vacation, they want to make sure their pets are well cared for," she said.

Spending in 2011 was up 5.3 percent from 2010, when it totaled $48.35 billion, Vetere said. He estimated 2012 sales would total $53 billion.

In 2011, people spent $19.85 billion on food, $13.41 billion on vet care, $11.77 billion on supplies and over-the-counter medicines, $3.79 billion on other services and $2.14 billion on live animal purchases.

In 2010, they spent $18.76 billion on food, $13.01 billion on vet care, $10.94 billion on supplies and over-the-counter medicines, $3.51 billion on other services and $2.13 billion on live animal purchases.

Food sales did slow down, Vetere said, even though the 5.8 percent growth exceeded projections of 4.1 percent growth.

APPA numbers indicate that animal sales and adoptions are flattening out and the number of people who switched over to high-end food products is topping out.

Pet ownership is becoming less of an impulse decision, Vogelsang said. "I am seeing a lot of people saying, 'This isn't the time for us.' People are more interested in pets than ever before but they are taking their time, once they make the commitment, to do it right."

"I don't think this is a bad thing. I am proud of the owners," she said.

Pet insurance is another area that is expected to grow briskly, Vetere said. Included in the veterinary care category, insurance was estimated to be $450 million in 2011 and expected to grow to more than $500 million in 2012.

"Insurance makes such a difference in the health of an animal," Vogelsang said. "I can't tell you how many times I have had a pet come in and the only reason (the owners) were able to afford catastrophic care is because they had insurance. It's literally a life-saver and I'm really glad people are embracing the concept," the veterinarian said.

The pet industry is also a major attraction for entrepreneurs and investors looking for creative and innovative products, Vetere said.

Vogelsang believes the trend is toward "very specific items geared to the specific needs of pets. We are seeing a lot of puzzle feeders for dogs — not just toys but ones that are geared toward the mental needs of the animal. Then there are bionic toys for destructive chewers, a lot of very niche items," she said.

somtimes the things that make a pet happy are the simplest, not the most expensive,!
i see people buy really outlandish holiday gifts for their dogs and i think , just de-bone a big peice of turkey or throw a big slab of ham on the floor and snuggle with him that night, dog will be just as happy . if a insect or mouse gets in your house, let your cat chase ( but not catch it ) for fun.

Yeah, my pets pretty much own me. However, I don't spend an exorbitant amount of money on them. They get food, treats, vet care, maybe a new toy every once in a while. They are absolutely spoiled in love and attention though! I wouldn't trade my babies for the world.

I must truly love animals because I have moved to Australia and they cost twice as much to keep yet I still got some when I came here. I have two cats and two birds. I about fell over backwards when I bought a 3kg (6.6 lbs) bag of cat food for $38.00.

People who have pets live longer and are happier than those who dont. My dogs are good company and good companions, they are worth it.

Dogs are people too, my friend.

That's what the cat tells me. We all get along quite well. The cat helped me understand my place in the pack by routinely leaving just the heads of little rodents on the front porch (face forward, of course) just so I wouldn't have any doubts.

My Yoda, a 3 1/2 year old chihuahua was adopted by me a year and a half ago. He was abandoned on the street. He was a rescue and he's been an important part of my life ever since. He's got 4 hamster friends who he loves. I've spent a small fortune on him through vet bills, toys and clothes. I get a kick out of his clothes and I love his sweatsuits. The neighbors crack up when they see him. He's got a great life and I intend to see that the rest of his life will continue to be so.

I love Parrots. But they really need a lot of attention to do well. Yoda goes with me where ever I go. I really couldn't do that with a bird. When I first saw my Yoda all I could think of was how much he looked like Yoda on Star Wars. :)

This year, my cat Figaro had more presents to open on Christmas than my mom did. He had his own stocking, and presents were overflowing onto the floor. I love my kitty and he totally deserves the spoiling he gets for being such an awesome cat.

One thing you can ALWAYS count on is your pet - they really don't care if you are young or old, gorgeous or homely, rich or poor - they just love you for who you are. That is the big difference between people and animals.
02:08 PM on 03/05/2012
and that's why they're worth the time, love and money

You know what's absolutely wonderful - when you return home (be it 5 min or 5 hrs) the reception is always the same - pure, unadulterated joy eminating from 4 legs and lots of fur lol!

Yes, I spend a lot on my pets, they are members of my family and spending on them to feed them good food and keeping them healthy and flea free is not cheap. I have one dog and 2 cats and it's expensive! They give me great pleasure and deserve every dime and then some. What I spend on them, I would normally spend on myself - so the money goes one way or another. I'd rather have them than a rolex that does not love back.

Why not dogs are great, I like all dogs, cant say the same about humans, lol

I had a pet Sheltie for 14 1/2 years, and at the end of his life I was spending money hand over fist to keep him alive, until I realized he wasn't going to live and be well and I was going to be in the poorhouse. With deep sorrow, I had him put down, and chose not to get another pet as the expense was more than I wanted to deal with.

There comes a time when spending on a pet is absurd and unreasonable and, if one is speaking from a moral point of view, immoral if no money is being given to humans in great need.

I take care of my family and my dog. I also take care of others through my taxes and payments to employees. I am sick and tired of people like you trying to teach me morality.

Ah, but iit is certainly more moral to spend one's own money on pets than it is for a govt to forcibly take the money and spend it on needy people. Unless initiating force on the innocent is acceptable in one's morality of course.

After reading this article I decided to sign my ginger cat, Deion, up for Purina health insurance. I have been in the habit of putting some money away each month, but I believe this will be better.
He also has bamboo bowls, a water fountain with a filter and lots and lots of toys. Basically the whole apartment is his, and I am happy to have it so.

Just wish there was some environmentally friendly cat food - everything has tuna in it. We are exterminating one species to feed another.

Try Orijen cat food. Your animals will live longer, healthier lives if they eat a truly high quality food. It's slightly more expensive, but you spend less on vet bills! :)

Cats are carnivores. Don't make them suffer because of your beliefs.

Cats aren't JUST carnivores. They are OBLIGATE carnivores. IE: they cannot survive without consuming a very high level of animal protein.

Obligate carnivores or 'true' carnivores depend on the nutrients only found in animal flesh for their survival. While they may consume small amounts of plant material, they lack the physiology required for the efficient digestion of vegetable matter and, in fact, some carnivorous mammals eat vegetation specifically as an emetic.

All felids including the domestic cat are obligate carnivores requiring a diet of primarily animal flesh and organs.

And, if Cheyla believes that cat food is the reason tuna are in trouble, she needs to do a little self-educating.
