C.S. Lewis And The Bible: Christian Author Offers Scripture Guide

First Posted: 03/03/2012 9:20 pm Updated: 03/03/2012 9:20 pm

C.S. Lewis’s popularity as a writer who transcends all Christian traditions is evidence of how widely he has become a trusted voice and a spiritual guide for those confronted with life’s biggest questions. His years of faithful Bible study as well as his ability to state things clearly and imaginatively reveal that Lewis had the ability to open more than wardrobe doors. His wide background of reading literature of the Western world informed his perspective so that in his one voice we can hear the echo of many voices. Lewis’s uniquely informed knowledge of the terrain of human thought, culture, and experience makes his commentary particularly helpful. He is a valuable guide for any reader who wants to grow in an understanding of Scripture and therefore wants to grow in his or her own life of faith.

Though Lewis wrote only one book that could in any way be construed as something approximating a Bible commentary -- "Reflections on the Psalms" -- much of his writing is very much informed by his study of the Bible. It is precisely in this way that Lewis’ own words can become a helpful commentary or guide for Bible reading and study. Someone might ask, “Why is it necessary to have anyone guide a reading of the Bible?” The answer, in part, is that the very history of Jewish-Christian thought has always had respect for biblical guides and teachers. This is as obvious as the record of rabbinical teaching and as proximate as the most recent Sunday-morning sermon given at any church in virtually every country of the world. Certainly anyone who has ever read the Bible more than once knows that a single read through the Scriptures does not leave every question answered. In fact, multiple reads of the text provide enriched and deepening understanding at each new reading. It is a book with layers upon layers of insight. It stands to reason that, if more can be discovered from the text, those who have gone further in the study of the text can benefit those of us who are still learning and teachable. In this way, Lewis is a helpful guide.

C.S. Lewis

"Creation seems to be delegation through and through. He will do nothing simply of Himself which can be done by other creatures. I suppose this is because He is a giver. And He has nothing to give but Himself. And to give Himself is to do His deeds -- in a sense, and on varying levels to be Himself -- through the things He has made."
-- from "Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer"

Bible Passage

"So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name."
-- Genesis 2:19

Religious "FAITH" is a killer!

This country has grown as a Christian nation. The bible has, and still is, used in about every public ceremony we conduct. Nearly all governmental swearing-ins uses a bible as the testament of truth. We see the bible in the funeral services conducted by nearly all the fraternal organizations. I believe it will be a long time before things change, but I do believe they will change.
Science has provided us with provable examples of creation of the universe and all living things. The Big Bang and evolution should be part of every ones education. When mankind finally accepts the fact that there is no supernatural, loving God out there who has control of everything, we will have to take another look at the religious texts.

We are continuing the "Crusades". Christians vs Muslims vs Christians !

Notice that it took Lewis a lifetime to rediscover his Christian moorings. I think the only way to come to the deeper truths in Christianity is with age and like a refuge. From defeat and having tried everything else. It takes a lifetime.
I find people who want to impose Christian morality on the general population dance with the devil. It's been tried and tried and always fails. You cannot legislate morality. You cannot teach what must be learned.
Christians evangelicals shroud themselves in moral self righteousness. The new breed want to change the government. But ask yourself why Christians in this country commit twice as many crimes per person as atheists. Why Christians have more abortions, and commit more murders and hate crimes. And if your looking for a walking talking example of hypocrisy, find a Christian. They hate those who take the life of a fetus, claiming that life is precious, but are the first to demand the death of a criminal.
Christian evangelicalism often devolves into narcissism. In being born again, one replaces a damaged self image with Jesus, a perfect being... a god. The burdens of doubt and humility vanish. A great joy to be sure, but what has been created? A slave to that perfect image. One will do anything to maintain and defend it: Reject criticism, reject reason, reject logic, reject compromise, reject history, reject anyone who is a threat to that image. It is perfect. How could it be wrong?

you make a bold statement with many assumptions. I would certainly ask you what you base those assumptions on and with what statistics? while I agree imposing morality on the general population is futile, true evangelicals only spread the Word of God and do not force it on people. Mother Teresa would be a primary example of a true evangelical. Through God's words evoked her deeds and through those deeds evoked her love for all of mankind in the name of God and only to glorify God.

DP4.... Mother Teresa? I agree with Christopher Hitchins: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/fighting_words/2003/10/mommie_dearest.html
"She was a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud..." She was a friend of poverty, not of the impoverished. (Note that when SHE got sick, she preferred California clinics, not her rundown clinic in Calcutta.) She fought against the empowerment of women, took dirty money, and refused to be audited.

Stats on Christian crime v. atheist crime? There are several studies of prison populations available on the internet. You can google it. Abortions? http://atheism.about.com/b/2008/03/07/abortions-highest-where-religion-is-highest.htm

Christian evangelicalism has bee co-opted by Dominionism and Christian reconstructionism. These right wing political movements believe in Theonomy. You can see it in today's politics. If this isn't an attempt to force Christianity down the throats of people, I don't know what it.

I have never read this guy, and don't know much about him.
This I do know.
If they speak not to the Law or the testimonys, there is no light in them . ISA. 8;20 Words to live by.

That one scripture, eliminates 99.9% of everyone that gets up on a pulpit
If people only believed the Bible, they wouldn't be so easily misled.

Not even C. S. Lewis could sugar coat the story of a god drowning his own children...

The earths cup of iniquity was full to the brim.
People were killing each other , stealing from each other, God gave them plenty of warnings to stop. Do you like living in a world of rebellion and needless suffering, brought on by transgression of Gods Law ? Which is ment to protect us.

God couldn't stand to see all the suffering man has brought to this planet.
This planets history is almost over. It looks like you've chosen which side your on.

I could have, if I had God's powers, fixed the problems you mentioned without drowning millions of people... Why didn't your loving and merciful God?

Isaiah 33:15-16
It makes sense..
and so too the Demons may get at your head and thoughts and heart and cloud them and threaten in innumerable ways that they will keep you from food and shelter and life and health...but even THEY do not bother to say that they will do this IF you stray from God..for all of you know that you will not.

Psalm 73: 27-28:
Makes sense.

Job 37:18-
There is the notion of the all-powerful...that God can create any degree of anything..such as he pleases..that he controls the darkness and the light..and the degree of each...
that he can speak to us using these things...
there may also be the notion that we may be living our lives in the mirror of God...
where we can see and understand the demons which plague us here on earth
and as we evaluate ...in the mirror skies of God...what they are..with the help of God...we can work to change their effect on us here on earth.

2 Samuel 6: 14-16-
This is the one I was most interested in...
I saw it as the female (I believe she was also his wife) watching the King David
dancing in his underwear, perhaps taunting God...
regardless of all of the translations which say its fine and natural to dance
he was bearing the arc of the covenant
which is the laws of God
the kind of laws that forbade the raucous
carefree dancing in Sodom and Gomorrah...

even if she fears for David having lost his ability to worship God correctly
and is sorry for him,

she must and can
only show disdain at his incorrect actions
now
while she is clear and clean enough
in hers own understanding to know
at some level
that what he is doing
is not okay.

2 Corinthians 13:9

If we pray for God to become perfect...
which He already is...
what we are really doing
is granting him
our good will
and trust
and the more of us who do that
the more of the power and the glory
is his
and the better he can make our world..
instead of us
pulling down on his perfection
with feelings of doubt and lack of urgence to believe
which means evil demons have succeeded, at least for a period of time, taken some of his world from him by coverning or smothering or confusing them through worldly tortures which distract us from praising God by forcing us to come completely down to earth and fight against them bodily and with our mind and spirit to preserve our right to be good and to live a Godly life.

Joel 2:2-13
It is possible that even though you are born pure and innocent..
the evil demons in the world
can lift you up
even if they cannot trick you
and cause ill and sin to occur around your spirit...
when you make your way back to God
you are going in the right direction
the only direction you need to know.

Jeremiah 49:19
These people were very easy to spot in the Old Testament...
it is not as easy in the New Testament
to distinguish them...
what with Jesus holding the key to meeting God and all.

Ezekial 39:7-8
A firm hand.
A decisive nature...
I am glad He is God.

Mark 13:32
As it should be..for he cannot be pinned down to force him to change it.

Luke 11:4
I did not know this one..but I have heard a spirit complaining that if they can speak at spirit than they should be able to speak at their body..my only question is..in light of things I see today...
are they looking at their own body...or are they being confused into looking at a clone or likeness of their own body...from somewhere in their past. It is not surprising that a demon (I will try to use this word in the future as it suits my needs) in a person could make them mute..as they are not opposed to making them speak...and I have witnessed them removing hearing...during the nighttime hours.

Psalm 51:1:-17- I do not feel this way...I wonder sometimes, when I read passages like this..if they do not belong to religion from before the time of Jesus..or during his time..when souls were recurring on earth without the understanding of Jesus to save them before their birth. I watch sin occur in my dreams..I feel sin approaching me in life...I am aware of people trying to set me up in situations where sin is inevitable...I have even witnessed conniving control of those who are only here to force you into sin so that they may say you have sinned...
I wonder if we truly have evolved as a society, if different degrees of souls were presented to different religions... if in the Bible the people did not recognise the sin as something that was being done to them..or if there are some new souls born and some old souls reworked.

Genesis 2:19-That is very straightforward...and in essence may remind creatures of God where they are from and to where they will return.

Exodus 29:42-The offering is most likely going to represent the manner in which the family farms or hunts...It will, in addition to creating a common greeting card between them and God throughout their generations, encourage them to battle the evil that may try to take their family's intended livelihood from them for the evil to enjoy.

Kings 8:38:40-This sounds like the plea from a King or one who does the work of a King...for God to intervene...it is wishful which makes it more of a prayer or a plea onto God for advancement, rather than a request or a demand..as, not unlikely, people of the time had also been taught to not ask for favours from God.

LOL.

I know there is such a willingness to on people in your camp to not give an inch particularly when an atheist claims faith in God, but the facts DO NOT support your "spin"

He was 33 when he embraced Christianity. He wouldn't die for another 30 years. It was Tolkien of The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fame who influenced him to convert.

Nice try.

If I remember rightly he only wrote two books after the death of Joy, one "A Grief Observed" is a kind of diary of his grief and resentment and finally coming to terms after her death, and the other is "Letters to Malcolm, mainly on prayer". All his other books on Christian Apologetics were written before he even met Joy.

Certainy and zealotry are barriers to truth. There is much comfort in belief because it absolves one from thinking, observing, questioning or embracing what it means to be human. Actions by some specific supernatural entity have never been proven any more real than an alien abduction.
