Cardinal Dolan Urges 'Freedom Of Religion Battle'

Dolan

03/ 3/12 06:53 PM ET  AP

HICKSVILLE, N.Y. -- Cardinal Timothy Dolan called on Roman Catholic worshippers Saturday to become more involved in politics as the church stands against the government in what he called a "freedom of religion battle," as he spoke about the recent controversy involving contraceptive coverage.

Speaking at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, the spiritual leader of the Archdiocese of New York said the U.S. government is engaged in "an unwarranted, unprecedented radical intrusion." He told the crowd they "live in an era that seems to discover new rights every day."

"We're not trying to impose our teachings on anybody," said Dolan in his 45-minute speech to a packed auditorium of about 1,000 people. "We're simply saying, don't impose your teaching upon us and make us do as a church what we find unconscionable to do."

Some religious organizations protested when President Barack Obama moved to mandate that religious-affiliated institutions such as hospitals and universities include free birth control coverage in their employee health plans.

Obama later said religious employers could opt out, but insurers must pay for the coverage.

Proponents say the plan is a breakthrough for women's rights, but Dolan and other leaders say it violates religious freedom.

Dolan, who is also president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, told reporters after the speech that they are in discussion with legal experts and constitutional scholars to determine whether legal action is necessary.

Perhaps it is time
to
discuss
the actual issue..
is the Catholic Church
perhaps inadvertantly...or by rote...
allowing
abuse of women
by
refusing to acknowledge
that disallowing birth control
in today's society
for women
may place them in harm's way
or sentence them and dear children
to long lives of turmoil and abuse...
as we have not stopped the abuse that
can get women pregnant without their consent...
or the fear that keeps them from telling someone
or even posting it to their private site...
and a tiny pill can be taken without any man
...ANY man...in their bodily or spiritual lives...
being able to admit to knowing.

Write in paragraphs like the rest of us. Free verse is for poetry--your application is smug and Narcissistic, and fails as a rhetorical device.

"Prescription birth control pills generally cost between $15 and $50 a month, and Wal-Mart and Target sell generic versions for as little as $9. The idea that college coeds are going broke from this small and predictable expense is ludicrous." (especially after paying $40,000 plus for tuition?)

Bishop Dolan's Liberty Letter

The Catholic Cardinal describes a chilling visit to the White House.

And one other quote to see how "religious" the H&Hs Secretary is

"He also relates a remarkable meeting that he says the White House convened with the bishops to "work out the wrinkles" of the mandate. Having accepted the invitation, the bishops asked if concrete policy changes like broadening the mandate's exemptions were "all off the table. They were informed that they are."

This is a considerate President? I think not.

Muslim capture and closure of the Holy Land and incursion into Europe 'brought' the Crusades.

No charge for the history lesson.
06:58 AM on 03/09/2012
True. My comment was poorly worded. The crusades were a result of Muslim capture of the Holy Land.

People who don't pay taxes should not be allowed to use paved roads or any other commodity (electric lines) that is paid by those who pay their taxes. And people who don't understand anything to solidarity and civilization, should not be allowed to receive Medicare, retirement pensions and even healthcare paid or subsidized by taxes.
You seem to ignore that Communism and Socialism are more than just a failed attempt in some specific countries. Democracy has various facets that have not always worked in history but that does not mean we should shun it know, or that it cannot handle some fixing.

The Romans are confused. Attempting to subvert law to their purposes is an act of war and they're the ones who fired the first shot.

If the Church feels so strongly about this, may I suggest that hire only Catholic instructors, doctors and nurses to work for them. Of course, there is that tiny issue about high percentage of Catholics who choose to use contraception (other than Church approved). There is an exemption and the Church has exercised this previously in a number of states. This about influence and political power, not about religious freedom. The Church hospitals do not perform abortions and do not dispense birth control. No one has challenged that. The law states that the insurance company must offer contraception to women as a benefit (much like well baby checks, or a yearly exam). A hospital is not Church - it is a Church enterprise, and it does charity work by seeing patients who have no insurance (as required by law - at least in the emergency room). Neither of those things force a Catholic doctor to prescribe birth control or perfom an abortion. A Catholic woman who does not want to use contraception is not being forced to do that by this law. I don't agree with pre-emptive war, but I must pay taxes that support this. Their moral stand on this is exactly worth as much as my moral stand on war. It's personal, it applies to my moral code (and the case of a Church, it applies to those who freely associate). Either way, neither the Church nor I have the right to impose our moral beliefs on others.

But you are not trying to help Mitch McConnell and the Republicans "destroy" President Barack Obama by challenging every decision he makes, whether that challenge is based on reality or lies!

I don't see the Catholic Church as having a greater moral code than I have in my faith. I don't want the Church imposing it's theology into my life because it's offended about something. Better a strong woman than a sheep.

This type of attitude is why any reasonable human being must FIGHT the infestation of religion into the secular world at every turn.

Following this Bishop's twisted logic, the US Government should not be allowed to enforce polygamy laws.

Nor should Jehovah's Witness physicians and paramedics be required to give non-Jehovah's Witness patients life-saving blood transfusions, since blood transfusions are against their religion. See where this madness will lead?

We're already there. Who in their right mind ten years ago would have thought a viable presidential contender would hold a position that states should have the right to ban all contraceptives, even for married people. It is madness.
01:05 PM on 03/08/2012
The Church allows blood transfusioins, so there is no issue there.
01:04 PM on 03/08/2012
The Church disallows polyamy so theer is no issue there.

Hospitals and Colleges are not Churches they are money making business so they should follow the rules that all there business do since other Catholic entities already provide this service. This is a not a religious issue it is one of Women's Health to try and make it about religious liberty is ridiculous. Maybe the Catholic Church needs to give back the Federal Money they get for running these Hospitals and Colleges and on top of that since the Church now see fit not to follow the Separation of Church and State they should also have the Exempt Status Removed!
01:09 PM on 03/08/2012
Get your facts straight:

Catholic-affilated universities and hsoptials are largely nonprofits - they are not 'money makers' for the Church.

Only about 14% of women taking contraceptives do so for purely medical health reasons - the rest use them as intended for birth control.

The Church receives absolutely no Federal money.

What do you think Tax Exemption is??? 98% of Catholic Women use Birth Control and 25 states already provide this service. It the Catholic Hospitals and Schools do not want to follow the rules we all do then give up your Tax Exemption and your on your own to do as you please!
Most this Federal money is in the form of tax subsidies or credits for the parents of parochial school children. Under the "child-benefit theory," government aid has been provided to the students of parochial schools, rather than to the schools themselves; by means of this compromise, the constitutional provision against aid to religious institutions is circumvented. In other word they are getting the money through the back door!
