Wladimir Klitschko Beats Jean-Marc Mormeck To Retain WBA-IBF Heavyweight Titles (VIDEO)

03/03/12 06:05 PM ET  AP

DUESSELDORF, Germany -- Wladimir Klitschko stopped French challenger Jean-Marc Mormeck in the fourth round of a one-sided fight to retain the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles Saturday night.

The Ukrainian put down Mormeck with a left-right combination, followed by a short left. Mormeck beat the count but looked wobbly and referee Luis Pabon stopped the fight.

"His strategy was to make me tired, but I dominated," Klitschko said.

Klitschko was credited with the 50th KO of his career, but Mormeck said he could have fought on.

"I was frustrated, I could have continued," Mormeck said.

Klitschko floored Mormeck in the second and completely dominated the much smaller challenger. Mormeck never connected with a clean punch, although Klitschko said he had been hit with one jab.

"My eye is still stinging," Klitschko said.

Klitschko improved to 57-3, while Mormeck dropped to 36-5. Klitschko also held on to the minor IBO and WBO belts.

Mormeck kept trying to come in, lunging forward with his head low and gloves high, often clinging to Klitschko.

A former cruiserweight, Mormeck gave up 6 1/2 inches in height 7 inches in reach to the champion.

Klitschko sent Mormeck down with a big right midway into the second round and it was soon clear he was looking to end the fight early.

Both fighters went sprawling down in the third as they pushed and shoved.

Klitschko picked up the pace in the fourth and connected with his left jab before flooring the Frenchman again.

"I've been around for 15 years and now I have the 50th (KO)," Klitschko told the crowd at Duesseldorf's football stadium. "It's a big day for me."

The fight had been originally scheduled for December, but was postponed when Klitschko needed surgery to remove kidney stones.

French movie stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Reno were on hand to watch their countryman.

Klitschko's older brother, Vitali, unanimously outpointed British challenger Dereck Chisora in Munich two weeks ago to retain his WBC belt and said he was hoping his next fight would be against David Haye, the British boxer who lost to Wladimir in July and is officially retired.

Before the fight, Haye challenged Vitali again over a video link.

"I hope the next fight will be against Haye," Vitali said in the ring.

Reading all these negative comments about the fight, i can only wonder if its not sour grapes, two brothers from the Ukraine have dominated the heavy weight division for the last decade, with no American in sight, where are the days of Dempsey,Marciano,Ali,Frazier,Tate,Tyson, etc etc.Well at least you have good memories.

Well it was a crappy fight. Klitchko didn't even have to cover up. Sad what they've done to boxing.

Sour grapes in away, but also Mormeck had no business in that ring, I would have rather seen a haye rematch inspite of how awful haye & him were that day. There may be never a fighter left to challenge the skill set the Klitscho's have or get around that trick they do of never facing a tough opponent in a rematch until the other or someone else has beaten them. They both let the giant sit on the shelf till he was too old to fight and got out tapped by haye. [haye?!!!!] So yeah sour grapes for heavyweight boxing not against klitscho's. I was a huge Wladimir fan until he was defeated by Sanders and his brother came in for the rematch instead. Then they did it again to Peters also. just a bit too not soldier or warrior like.

It wasn't him, Charley. It was you.

Remember that night in the Garden?

You came down to my dressing room and said, "Kid, this ain't your night.

"We're going for the price on Wilson."

You remember that?

"This ain't your night."

My night! I could have taken Wilson apart!

So what happens, he gets the title shot outdoors in the ball park...

...and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palookaville!

You was my brother, Charley.

You should have looked out for me a little bit.

You should've taken care of me a little so I wouldn't...

...have to take dives for short-end money.

I had some bets down for you. You saw some money.

You don't understand, I could have had class!

I could have been a contender.

I could have been somebody.

Instead of a bum...

...which is what I am. Let's face it.

It was you, Charley!

What happened to the quality of boxing photos. Back in the days of Ali, all photographers had were SLRs, flashbulbs, and good timing. Even less technology during the days of Louis and Marciano. Are shooters getting lazier in the age of digital?

How could HuffPost devote space to this boring fight that nobody cared about and totally skip the woman's Strikeforce Championship fight in Columbus last night? The women's fights were the two most entertaining fights of the night - and Ronda rocked the arena!! Come on HuffPost, get your sexist head out of that dark place and give the girls their due.

Wladimir destroyed Mormeck.

Where's the thread for the Miesha Tate v Ronda Rousey Strikeforce match-up tonight?

Miesha has the MMA experience but Ronda not only has the genetics nut she has tremendous ground-skill.
She's a two time Olympian and Bronze medal winner in Women's Judo who has won all 4 of her proffessional MMA fights by armbar submission under 1:00.
She's also currently living in my hometown, Venice Beach.
I know she's the underdog but my money and heart is on "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey
