SZCZEKOCINY, Poland, March 4 (Reuters) - The death toll from Poland's worst rail crash in two decades rose to 16 on Sunday as rescue workers searched the mangled wreckage of two express trains that collided head-on at high speed.

President Bronislaw Komorowski said he would announce a period of national mourning for those killed when the trains collided late on Saturday near the town of Szczekociny in southern Poland. Nearly 60 of the estimated 350 passangers on board were injured.

The battered locomotive of one of the trains had been forced upwards in the crash, most of the carriages had derailed and some were lying on their sides.

Officials said they could not rule out finding more bodies as heavy machinery began the task of pulling apart the wreckage.

"After the rescue operation is over, I will take a decision about national mourning because it took place at the border of three provinces and the victims were from all over Poland," Komorowski, who visited the scene on Sunday, said.

"The scope of this disaster is sufficiently large to warrant national mourning," he said.

Komorowski also visited some of the survivors in hospital. The injured passengers were taken to several hospitals in the region by helicopter and ambulance.

More than 350 firefighters and other rescue workers struggled overnight to extract the victims from the twisted wreckage at a remote field crossed only by a pair of rail tracks.

"This certainly is the most tragic train catastrophe in our history in many, many years," said Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who arrived at the site of the crash with several other government officials early on Sunday.

"There was no braking, only the crash, and the lights went out, people were screaming," passenger Dariusz Wisniewski told a local television station. "When we got out we saw bodies and wounded all over, as well as the twisted wreckage. I had never seen anything like it."

Tusk said it was too early to speculate about the cause of the collision, but said human error could not be ruled out. Transportation Minister Slawomir Nowak said one of the trains, bound for Krakow, was on the wrong side of the track.

Authorities were opening an investigation.

The fate of the two drivers was not immediately known. Among the passangers were several Ukrainians along with French and Spanish citizens.

One of the trains had been going from Warsaw to Krakow and the other from the city of Przemysl to the capital.

The wreckage on one of Poland's most heavily used train routes was causing delays of up to three hours on Sunday.

So dead Polish people is a joke to you?

You sound like a depraved anti-Polish Bigot.
09:36 AM on 03/05/2012
if you count the 20 nationalities in my genes you would find the second biggest percentage is the part that is polish only second to german and hungarian comes in third...

i'm not a bigot i just see the world different than how most people see it... how many people you think died in the joke about the polish submarine? hundreds maybe? i still hear that joke all the time...

before you go on with what if it happened to you or someone you know.... because you don't know me... not only did i lose 3 family members in the 9/11 attacks i lost a close friend in japan from the tsunami... i'm not going to stop someone from making jokes about them again my point of view is different than others like it or not... it has no impact on my immediate life so why waste time in argueing about it?

Yes and you're one helluva psychopath.

But at least you appropriately named yourself as poop.

I remember time... when whole world supported U.S ... after 9/11 ... after one dacade... it would be hard... to find... a country... which supports ... U.S ... except for Poland.. Yes we are stupid... because we still support U.S and it's so called "War on Terror"... sending our troops... to Iraq.. and Afganistan... I hope... we wouldn't support... U.S in upcoming war... with Iran.. and our soldiers will come back... from Afganistan as soon as it's possible...

While these train wrecks are traggic, they're invevitable. Human error is always the culprit. China has trains which travel at speeds of 300 miles per hour. Watch when one of their trains collide. They've already had one. Countries which are trying to develop modern train systems need the Germans to show them how it's done. Our own train system is antiquated compared to Germany's. And, I'm talking about what I saw in Germany in 1984 and comparing it to what we have now in the Boston to DC corridor.

Enough already! both with the numbingly boring Polish jokes, AND with the needy Polish retorts such as "well, we have Marie Curie and Copernicus, we have Chopin, a Pole invented esperanto, and a Pole invented ___" etc.. ....Say something new, please!
That said, I can never understand how two trains can be put on the same track without extraordinary precaution, and it happens far too often.

Erm... well.. the most fearless pilots in the RAF were Polish. Poles were vital in Britain's code-breaking.

This is true.

In the book "The Code Book" by Simon SIngh, he illustrated how Poles were mostly responsible for the code breaking of the Nazi German code Enigma. This code breaking process was then transferred to Britain.

Also if you google "Squadron 303" one will see that the Polish sqaudron had the highest kill rate of Nazi German planes in the Battle of Britain. RAF Polish squadron 303 was key in the success of the Allied air campaign against the Nazis in the Battle of Britain.

"high speed" is a misnomer, as Polish trains are just called high speed when they go faster than a good run...

paramissionray,

There is no need to make anti-Polish slurs.

People have died here.

Or do you really believe the anti-Polish stereotype that Hollywood and the TV media have pushed for decades, that Polish people have "inferior intelligence"/are lesser humans then other people and deserve ridicule?
12:28 AM on 03/05/2012
Speak the truth TXFF500

There is no need for harsh words and discriminatory remarks. The loss of life, no matter where it is in the world, should not be end of some joke. It is sick to do so. We are one species, and we are one people. My thoughts go out to the ones who have lost loves one in this accident. I can only hope that with time, their pain can heal somewhat.

Seems like I have heard Mr. Obama promise to do more (spend more) to develop high-speed train travel in this country. This is about the 5th collision/track failure/operator error crash that has been reported in the past year. Is this really wise? Americans do not have the many years of train travel to utilize this sort of transportation - they want their cars.

Of course we want our cars but we also want our gas affordable and those days are over. Perhaps when we start overseeing our highspeed trains they wont be careening into each other since they shouldn't happen to be on the same track headed toward one another.
06:02 PM on 03/04/2012
I guess I was trying to point out that the European Countries have been accustomed to train travel as a norm for many, many years, and depend on it. Our train service here in the US is pitiful (Amtrak), as my family have tried to find itineraries to travel around the country and they are either way too expensive and/or way too inconvenient. It will take years to get that mindset changed. We are the country of the car. We can't even get people to carpool, although that might be resurrected if gas goes much higher.

Cars are ONE form of transportation. Planes trains are great to have also and they create jobs just like highways!

And cars don't crash?

Why we all knew that up there yonder, over them hills was the fastest track in the west and sooner or later they was gonna meet like two oh dem mustang type horses headed straight at each other like a arrows on fire. Well, that's what I was wonderin about here in these parts.

Oh this is so sad.
My grandmother was the most seriously injured person during a fatal train accident many many years ago. (Amtrak collided with a Hershey's truck during a very foggy day). It took almost 15 years before they both stopped blaming each other for the accident and started paying people settlements. It was this accident that damaged her hip so badly that she later on needed a replacement, during which operation she had a severe stroke, which eventually killed her. If it weren't for that train accident, she would still be alive today
I'll be curious to see what ultimately caused this as the story unfolds.
So sad....I'm sending good vibes to the survivors and to the families who are suffering a loss today.
