9 New Lessons We've Learned About Sleep And Health

The Huffington Post   Posted: 03/05/2012 8:39 am EST

Today kicks off National Sleep Awareness Week, the annual campaign by the National Sleep Foundation that runs from March 5 to 11 to remind people about the importance and value of sleep.

Multiple studies have shown that not getting enough sleep each night is linked with poor mental performance, a bad mood, and even an increased risk of health conditions like heart disease and high blood pressure, according to the National Institutes of Health.

For most adults, seven to eight hours is the prime amount of sleep to get a night, while kids and newborns require even more sleep. As the NIH puts it, "how well rested you are and how well you function the next day depend on your total sleep time and how much of the various stages of sleep you get each night."

For the latest and greatest in sleep, check out our round-up of the top sleep findings that have come out in the last few months.

Circadian Rhythms Influence Immunity

If you've ever been afraid of getting sick when your sleep patterns are off, you might be on to something.

A study in mice published just last month in the journal Immunity shows that the circadian clock -- which determines when we are tired, hungry or alert -- is also in charge of controlling an immune system gene, HuffPost's Catherine Pearson reported.

"People intuitively know that when their sleep patterns are disturbed, they are more likely to get sick," study author Erol Fikrig, professor of epidemiology at the Yale School of Medicine, said in a statement. "It does appear that disruptions of the circadian clock influence our susceptibility to pathogens."

Take walks during the day, on treadmill or whatever. Drink water - at least half your body weight daily , 100lbs = 50 oz of water daily. Turn off the tv and lights. Pray to God for forgiveness for the day - nobody is sinless (1John1:9) and be thankful. Cast your cares on Him (Psalm 55:22) and loll off to sleep. Instead of counting sheep, memorize Scriptures, start with Psalm 100 - easy to learn. Will take a while for your sleep to become rhythmic. But it will.

Wasn't there a recent article saying that the sleep recommended for children is based on no evidence at all? http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/129/3/548

Less sleep can cause to many problems for you, so if you want to stay fresh, you must sleep at least 8 hours a day.

I know my poor sleeping has contributed to my heart problems I'm facing..I've suffered with a sleeping disorder for 28 yrs. But stress too and some of the foods I used to eat in my past also did as well. But my sleeping has always been on the top of my list. I've been to a sleep clinic where they have monitored me. I will not take meds because of the buffers they use and I do like my liver and kidneys thank you. ;-)

HiThis is so sensitive that I'm afraid to post it as a link anywhere because anyone can read it. Is there someone at HP whose email address I can forward it to? Vile, furious response to my email instructing that he stop sending with cc to scoop/hp; 60" cbs; many others. Completely irrational. I prefer forwarding to one of your contacts if possible.

If it is that vile how is it still being seen and not removed?

Nevertheless....

I have a drop gmail account. It is an alias and is completely empty and never checked.

I only check it when I ask someone to send something to me from here. It is MurphtheSurf350@gmail.com. You send to me there.

If we boost our learning capacity as we sleep and if we sleep better with age; can you conclude that our learning capacity gets better with age?

These aren't new lessons. It's common sense. You get good, consistent sleep and your health benefits from it. There. I just summed up the whole damn article in five seconds. These HuffPo writers really need to find something original to report on.
