How Can Small Businesses Stand Out On Twitter? Survey Says

Small Business Twitter

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/ 5/2012 9:34 am Updated: 03/ 5/2012 9:34 am

Worried that people aren't reading your tweets? In a study led by Carnegie Mellon University, Twitter users rated only 36 percent of the tweets they received as worth reading, while they considered 25 percent not worthwhile, and they were ambivalent about the other 39 percent.

What type of tweets do readers like most? Tweets that pose questions, tweets that share information, and even self-promotional tweets (such as links to the tweeter's own content) were most popular. Least popular were tweets about someone’s current mood or activity, negativity or complaints, and overuse of Twitter symbols such as hashtags and @. "Special hatred was reserved for Foursquare location check-ins," the report states.

Why it matters to your business: Twitter can be a great tool for small-business owners, but outside of watching how many retweets you get or followers you attract, it's often hard to determine how effective your tweets are at engaging the audience. This study provides at least some insight into what does and doesn't work to attract and keep your audience -- and more importantly, how not to alienate them.

This doesn't really tell you how to stand out on Twitter...

Most businesses use Twitter for interruption marketing and spamming. That would be one top reason why no one responds.

Now internet spammers use automatic harvesting apps to follow, creating a real wrench in Twitter.

I am an office assistant that has been assigned the duties of internet marketing and I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT I AM DOING! Can anyone give me tips on how to market on twitter and face book?

I've been using this company for my Twitter account because I am too busy with "real work" and they have increased my followers and I seen a small sales spike. Of course I am only working with them for 2 months. You should give them a try:

I have no affiliation with them except as a customer.

About a month ago, I decided I wanted to learn about twitter, so I read about it online, went to site and signed up.

I chose about 12 people to follow (ranged from Lady GaGa to Dalai Llama).

Thought about asking friends if they "tweeted", but decided it might be construed as invitation to "tweet" me and knew what they did daily would be boring---not something I'd want to hear about---so didn't ask. : )

Ditto re: me tweeting others.

Did read one good short article re: tweeting:

Guy spent some time explaining twitter and tweeting to his grandfather. Grandfather replied, "And why would I want to do that?" (Maybe you had to be there).

All said though, articles re: funny tweets are fun to read. But, I keep in mind that articles are selecting about a dozen interesting tweets out of millions sent daily....

BTW, I don't tweet "(thank god", you're saying) and after about 2 weeks of following tweets of those I picked, I got bored .... So, their tweets are piling up, unread....

End of my little tweet/twitter story. (Thank god, I know).

Grammar lesson:

Re should never be used in the middle of a sentence with a colon after it.

It has become common to use it in a subject line; for example:

Re: How to Attract Customers Through Twitter

Although such subject lines are standard, dropping the re altogether would be better.

Re is an archaic short form for "in reference to," so no colon required.

Letters, reports, etc. with re: in the middle of a sentence give the reader a fast hint that the writer is uneducated.

By the way, assuming the use of re, it would be, "Ditto re my tweeting others," not "Ditto re me tweeting others."

Best not use "re" at all.

I googled Twitter and signed up for it. Then, on Twitter website, you can search for names of people to "follow".  I checked my twitter account every couple of days to see if there were new tweets from these people because I didn't have their tweets go to my phone.  So, I just "followed" and don't tweet. Matter of fact, I lost interest after about 2 weeks and stopped checking.... But, I'm sure if you put the question "How do I tweet?" in your google bar, you'd find websites that explain it all in detail. Good luck.  :  )

I've experienced quite the opposite.
Like anything else, it depends on context, and expanding one's capacity for growth and development. As a graphic artist, I follow clients, and they follow me. it's how creative people get gigs these days. I do a lot of traveling, so it's also great for staying in touch with my home-town gallery community. Most of all it's profound for 24 hour tech support. I tweeted about an App I was having issues with at 4 in the morning and got an instant reply from a company rep resolving my problem. It's the Future even The Jetson's couldn't imagine!

It's a fire hose of noise, because businesses think it's another way to push push push. "Media" means: tools used to store and deliver information or data.

"Social Media" defined as: media disseminated through social interaction.

What is so social about pushing bland, stale, corporate PR messages out to all your followers? There's no interaction, just more shoving their messages & plugs down people's throats. People wouldn't want to read these if they were getting paid. I'm so glad Gary Vaynerchuk is doing corporate consulting now because somebody's gotta do something with these companies.
