Barack Obama Comments On Rush Limbaugh, The 'War On Women'

Posted: 03/ 6/2012 3:52 pm

President Barack Obama weighed in on what many have characterized as the "War on Women" in a press conference Tuesday, criticizing Rush Limbaugh for his incendiary comments about Sandra Fluke and speculating about which issues will matter to women in the 2012 elections.

Asked whether he believed Limbaugh's apology to Fluke, made after a number of advertisers had already severed ties with his show, was sincere, Obama said he wasn't going to comment on the "economics and politics" of the situation. But he did take a minute to explain why Limbaugh's comments struck a very personal chord for him as a father of two daughters.

"I don't know what's in Rush Limbaugh's heart, so I'm not going to comment on the sincerity of his apology," Obama said. "What I can comment on is the fact that all decent folks can agree on, that the remarks that were made don't have any place in the public discourse. And the reason I called [Fluke] is because I thought about Malia and Sasha, and one of the things I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about--even ones I may not agree with them on. I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way, and I don't want them attacked or called horrible names because they are being good citizens."

Obama said he called Fluke personally on Friday because he wanted to thank her for having the courage to speak out, but also to send a message to all young people that they shouldn't be intimidated by Limbaugh's incendiary remarks and discouraged from taking a stand on issues that are important to them.

"I wanted Sandra to know that I thought her parents should be proud of her and that we want to send a message to all our young people that being part of a democracy involves argument and disagreements and debate," he said. "We want you to be engaged, and there is a way to do it that doesn't involve you being demeaned and insulted."

Limbaugh's comments sparked an enormous controversy partly because of the way in which they fit into a larger political narrative currently unfolding, as primarily Republican legislators in multiple states push legislation targeting women's access to abortion and contraception. The women's vote was a huge part of Obama's win in 2008, and many have speculated that the politicization of contraception and other women's issues will give him the same voter boost in 2012.

When asked about the so-called "War on Women" and whether it will help him and the Democrats in the next election, Obama stressed the fact that women are not going to be single-issue voters, but added that Democrats "have a better story to tell."

Women are going to make up their own minds in this election about who is advancing the issues they care most deeply about. One of the things I've learned being married to Michelle is I don't need to tell her what it is she thinks is important, and there are millions of strong women around the country who are going to make their own determination about a whole range of issues. It's not going to be narrowly focused just on contraception, it's not going to be driven by one statement by one radio announcer. It's going to be driven by their view of what's most likely to make sure they can help support their families, make their mortgage payments, who's got a plan to ensure that middle class families are secure over the long term, what's most likely to result in their kids being able to get the education they need to compete, and I believe that Democrats have a better story to tell to women about how we are going to solidify the middle class and grow this economy, make sure everybody has a fair shot, everybody is doing their fair share, and we got a fair set of rules of the road everybody has to follow. So I'm not somebody who believes that women will be single-issue voters, they never have been. But I do think we have a strong story to tell when it comes to women.

Moment's after Obama made his comments, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) fired back with a Facebook post calling attention to "Real Time" host Bill Maher's donation to an Obama-allied super PAC. Maher has made several gender-based verbal attacks against Palin and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) during his stand-up comedy routines.

"Pres. Obama says he called Sandra Fluke because of his daughters," Palin wrote. "For the sake of everyone's daughter, why doesn't his super PAC return the $1 million he got from a rabid misogynist?'

Maher has never made any gender based attacks against Palin and Bachman. . they are stupid and they happen to be Women . He's neither saying all women are stupid nor is he attacking them just because they are women. They are two women that just happen to be stupid. Maher is not going to spare them just because they are 'women'. He believes in gender equality.

Now for a few facts about Obama and his War on Women. Bill Maher contributed one million to a Obama Super Pac. Bill Maher recently called Sarah Palin a cu_t on HBO. Will Bills vicious smear of Sarah Palin result in Obama returning the one million contributed to his Super Pac? Not a chance, nor will the democrats start a boycott of Bill Maher. Maher also slandered TEBOW and Christians but that act was rewarded by the leftist media, not discouraged. What has Obama done for women during his Presidency. More women are living in poverty now than under any Administration in the last 60 years. More women are unemployed under this Administration. Fuel costs are now over $4 a gallon, which directly affects the cost of food, heating fuel, women's products, and medical care. In fact food prices have increased by 150 to 300% during the Obama years. Obama's Secretary of Energy wants fuel prices to reach European levels, or $10 a gallon. Have your retirement or home values increased or decrease during Obama's Presidency? It only takes a few facts to totally discredit the lefts allegation that Republicans are waging a War on Women. Every major economic indicator has shown that Obama's policies are the culprit. And finally Obama has decided to gut military medical and retirement programs to pay for Union waivers of Obamacare. His War on our miltiary is the last straw. He must be voted out for the good of our Nation.

Maher tweeted today that liberals look bad not accepting Rush's apology also said he hates intimidation by sponsor pullout...Even he recognizes the perpetual double standard!

This is a very tricky issue. I agree that Bill Maher should suffer the same boycott that Rush Limbaugh did because in spite of his right to voice his opinion, he does not have the right to call people who disagree with him such vile names based on their gender or otherwise! I'm wondering if the Republican Party has returned Rush Limbaugh's money contributions to him? These two individuals have more in common than either of them believe. For example, both have a history of name-calling and being very reactive. Makes me think they must not have received much attention as children. The economy stinks around the world right now, except for China. People have the right to gainful employment, shelter, education & healthcare but how the hell do we get there? Communist China is doing well whereas both right-wing & left-wing governments in Europe are really struggling. How do we solve these problems?

This just in: Obama orders his PAC to return Bill Maher's $1 million donation due to Maher also calling a female that "s" word.
Oh wait, that was a dream. Obama is keeping that money. Updates will follow on how he explains this one in reference to his daughters.

The president gives a reasoned response to a delicate issue from the very familiar point of view of a dad with two young daughters... and the Cons still find ways to spin it as intrusive and unAmerican.

I am so disgusted by this mand abd the phone call he made. Invoking his daughters. And yet one of our true heroes, Brian Terry, died from his failed policy and he did not call his family.Every move he makes is calculated. It ios all about I.

So you sit in on every White House phone call to know whether The President called or not?
You might also want to look at similar gun running program under the last admin.

And just a thought. did you complain when the last President failed to call every single soldier who died as a result of his failed policies.

I would guess you were disgusted even before the phone call... and of course you know this president has been WAY tougher on illegal immigration than his predecessors, like amnesty Reagan, but I encourage you to trying... you might actually make a relevant point.

That's a long, drifting, incoherent answer on the so-called war on women. But that is a page in the Democrat Party playbook, and that's what this contraception issue is all about. The whole purpose of the appearance by Fluke before the Democrat subcommittee was to take away and distract from the real issue that Issa's committee was looking into, which is: Does the president have the constitutional authority to demand and mandate that Catholic universities (or churches or schools) provide not just contraception, but other medication that facilitates abortions taking place or that causes them to happen? That was the original purpose of Issa's hearing, and they had a witness lined up for this hearing: Barry Lynn. And at 4:30 in the afternoon, they canceled. The Democrats pulled Barry Lynn out and said that they wanted Sandra Fluke to show up instead. And Issa said, "Who's this? We don't know who she is? She doesn't have any expertise." There's a 72-hour vet rule. They have 72 hours to figure out who the witnesses are, to see if they're qualified. Democrats didn't want that to happen. No one yet know's what they didn't want the Republicans to learn about Sandra Fluke, but they didn't want them to learn something. And the HP will not post this comment because they don't want you to know either.

Bill Maher's show is PAY-FOR premium cable channel, not broadcast nationally over AM radio, where Bubba's transistor in the outhouse can pick it up. This is a question of demographic reach. Folks who pay for premium channels generally know the difference between entertainment and facts. I can't honestly say that about Rush's listeners, who believe his OPINION is factual news.

Gee, Obama, when you are fighting for your girls right to have an opinion, teach them to be sure it's the liberal blather--otherwise they'll be called the "c" word by your $1 million contributor Bill Maher; or female dog if you happen to be her daughter and Bill finds you "funny"...the hypocrisy here is just startling. Could he please return any financial money Bill gave to his Super Pac, today???? No? Gee, he has such strong principles.

Bill's comments happened within a 60 second period. Limbaugh went on and on for THREE Days. There is a BIG difference. Your strawman argument doesn't hold water.

Um, I believe if you'll review most of Bill Maher, he's repeatedly used filthy language to describe Laura Ingram, Michelle Bachman, Sarah Pallin's daughter, and several other folks in the media. I just think Obama was trying to comfort someone who revealed what his Obamacare mandate is for--giving women the ability to behave how they want at taxpayers' expense! Sorry, I don't want to pay for their immoral behavior--nor do I want my taxpayer money funding the abortions she'll end up having when the birth control method I had to help fund doesn't work....that's what has been lost by all the hullaballoo.

Now how many the GOP candidates received contributions or SuperPac money from Rush. Have you called for an investigation into those funds?

With the way the left scrutinizes Rush and anyone on the right, I'm betting that amount is near $0 or it would have been plastered all over the place in HP. Rush doesn't want to support any one candidate. Nice spin though.

Today I am advocating the abandonment of bipartisanship by the Democratic Party. When the right wing fanatics are so far out there, we can find NO common middle ground for the good of ALL of The American people. It is becoming time to just get things done anyway.!
I recently watched, for the 100th time, the Movie The American President. I always want Michael Douglass to be MY President by the end of the movie. What an amazing speech at the end. Then this morning I was reminded of the speech by a young man from Illinois named Barack Obama at the 2004 Democratic Convention. Mr President, watch a video of that speech and learn the direction you should be going. Come on Sir, I know you have it in you. It IS time to motivate The American People.
I did grow up in the time of the great orator Ronald Reagan, yes The Republican. This man had the ability to motivate us even if we didn't share his beliefs. The American People need to be motivated NOW and Mr President I think you have within you the ability to do so. Forget what your pitiful advisers say and motivate me, so I don't have to wait for Michael Douglass to do it.
Your last campaign advocated change, well I am offering you the slogan for this campaign, It is very simply ACTION! Your are our leader, you are our orator, lead us now into ACTION! (please!)

Limbaugh is exactly what true conservatives DO NOT NEED...He is not the truth detector, he is and has always been a TRUTH DEFLECTOR...Never criticises his party, NEVER no matter how wrong..Is this what America wants, deniers on a nationwide talk show??
