Chocolate-Covered Jalapenos, Chocolate-Covered Sweet Peppers: Taste Test

Posted: 03/ 6/2012 5:17 pm

Yes, folks. Chocolate-covered jalapenos are real. And they aren't a gimmick either. These treats come recommended from Esquire as "crisp, juicy, and a great way to make your mouth happy."

This odd yet rather gorgeous combination is not for the faint of heart. The jalapenos are very fresh (which helps explain their $60 price tag) and pack a serious kick. Despite the generous layer of chocolate (white, milk or dark), it's hard to call these a dessert. In fact, most tasters at HuffPost Food HQ were reaching for their water glasses afterwards. But if you love jalapenos and love chocolate, this really could be your new favorite food.

For those not as into spicy desserts, the Chocolate Covered company also offers chocolate-covered sweet peppers, which are strangely delicious. These peppers have no hint of spiciness in them and are a fun and weird snack. We'd totally serve 'em at a cocktail party. We wouldn't subject our guests to the jalapenos though -- one accidental eye rub later and we'd be throwing the worst party ever.

Quick Poll

Would you eat chocolate-covered jalapenos?

Here is the thing. Jalapenos raw play big havoc with the gut. If you cook them, okay. Better off eating chocolate with a spice like cayenne or chili powder cooked in.

Chocolate is great when spiked with chiles...why not try it the other way?
Mole sauce, hot chocolate (Abulitos brand), and MY chocolate double down cake!

I make very spicy vegetarian chili and always add cocoa. Lots of people eat it and swear it has meat in it.

I love bacon and I love dark chocolate, but the combination sounded horrible... until I tried it. It was delicious!

I'd try them. Had spicy chocolate bars before. It bothers me more that the jalapenos are so bitter rather than their heat.

I'd give these a try. Lindtt makes a chili pepper dark chocolate bar that is pretty good.

This sounds like a great idea, but I'd want to scoop the bitter seeds out before dipping.

Or maybe scoop the seeds out and stuff the cavity with chocolate ganache...

I love jalapenos, and I can see how the chocolate (bitter-sweet, for my taste) would complement the piquant flavor. Dunno if I coud eat a whole one without fear of what the next morning would feel like, but I would definitely give it a bite or two.

I eat ghost pepper sauce with joy. It's the non-vegan chocolate that concerns me more.
