Obama News Conference: President Holds First Full Conference Of 2012 (VIDEO)

Obama News Conference

BEN FELLER   03/ 6/12 09:42 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Amid fresh concerns over the safety of American forces, President Barack Obama on Tuesday said the accidental burning of Qurans in Afghanistan and the retaliatory killings of U.S. troops gave new credence to the need to end the war.

"I think that it is an indication of the challenges in that environment, and it's an indication that now is the time for us to transition," Obama said during a White House news conference.

Obama announced no speeding up of the NATO-backed plan to end combat missions in Afghanistan at the end of 2014, saying "that continues to be the plan." But he said the violence aimed at Americans in Afghanistan that followed the accidental burning of Qurans on a U.S. base was "unacceptable."

Six Americans were killed in retaliatory violence. Obama offered his apologies to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, a move that was roundly criticized by his Republican presidential rivals as weak and unnecessary.

From Congress, Obama was getting tugged from another direction. A letter calling for Obama to accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan had the backing of 23 senators, mostly Democrats but including two conservative Republicans, Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., who circulated the letter with Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said in a statement that there "something fundamentally wrong with spending $88 billion for national building in Afghanistan while we're asking Americans to make tough cuts here at home."

Foreign policy and domestic politics battled for top billing in Obama's first White House news conference of the year, which coincided with Super Tuesday, the 10-state voting contest for Republican presidential hopefuls.

Obama insisted that diplomacy can still resolve the crisis over Iran's possible pursuit of nuclear weapons, and he accused his Republican critics of "beating the drums of war."

Obama said he emphasized that message in his private meetings with Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu this week, and implied that Israeli pressure for urgent action was not supported by the facts, saying that a decision was not necessary within the next weeks or months.

Addressing another international crisis in Syria, Obama said the violence there was "heartbreaking" but he showed no new willingness for military involvement in that Mideast country.

Obama said unilateral military action by the United States against the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad would be a mistake. And he rejected a comparison to Libya, where the United States and allies did intervene last year, saying the situation in Syria is more complex. In Syria, Russia has blocked a U.N. Security Council resolution against Assad's government, and Assad's military is better equipped and more powerful than the Libyan force.

More than 7,500 people have been killed in Syria during the year-long government crackdown on the opposition.

Turning to domestic politics, Obama said higher gasoline prices as a result of Mideast worries would be bad for any president running for re-election, and he also said he was working to expand America's energy base.

Obama also dismissed as laughable the suggestion by some Republican critics that he actually supports increased gas prices. No president facing re-election would want to see gas prices rise, he said, because of the hardship that would cause American families.

In the past month, gasoline prices have risen by more than 28 cents per gallon, making gasoline the most expensive ever for this time of year. On Tuesday, the nationwide average for regular unleaded slipped less than a penny to $3.764 per gallon, ending a string of price increases that began on Feb. 8.

Obama said he had asked his attorney general to examine whether speculation in the oil markets is driving up oil prices.

The president also made an election year appeal to women, a key voting bloc for Obama in the general election. Obama confidently asserted that Democrats would have a "better story" than Republicans to tell female voters November on everything from housing to education to contraception.

Obama's campaign has been particularly pointed in his outreach to women on the issue of access to birth control. The president made a pointed entry in the debate last week when he called a Georgetown University Law School student who was criticized by radio commentator Rush Limbaugh because of her vocal support for his administration's requirement of birth control insurance coverage.

Obama said he telephoned Sandra Fluke, who was labeled a "slut" by Limbaugh, because he doesn't want people who speak their minds about policy issues to be discouraged or attacked.

Asked to comment on Limbaugh's apology, Obama says he doesn't know "what's in Rush Limbaugh's heart."

Obama said the incident made him think of his two daughters and his hopes that they can engage in issues they care about in the future. He said he doesn't want his daughters "attacked or called horrible names" for speaking their minds and being good citizens.

The President was in full campaign mode yesterday! He sounded like the President Obama that we all know and love and what we can expect for the next 4 years!

Your vote is cancelled by a far right winger.

It's a shame.

The President had a good Monday with his stance on Isreal, sounding strong and Presidential. Yesterday, he threw it all away by being back on the campaign mode. Instead of saying that we as a country oppose Iran and sounding Presidential, he said that he is stronger against Iran than George Bush turning it into a campaign bash Bush fest.

Too bad... an opportunity blown.

Are you really unaware of the fact that this is election season? It would be ridiculous if President Obama didn't campaign. Iran is a country of millions of people. Why should he claim that we are opposed to them? You may be, but "we" aren't. Some of us care more about policies than we do about machismo.

There is violence all over the world , even in NYC . On the tv show " All Worked Up " a lunch truck lady threw a bag of forks at the server .

How many times is this man going to apologize?

So far I haven't heard any apologies from them for killing Christians, burning churches, cutting heads off, dragging the bodies of our dead soldiers through their streets, etc.

We've said sorry it happened. That's enough. Grow a pair Obama!

Are you of the opinion that he should have ignored the advice of his generals who asserted that apologizing was the best thing to do? And why would the politicians in Afghanistan apologize to us for the things that you're claiming? They aren't burning our churches and they certainly aren't killing any more Christians than we kill over here. Our military actions in Afghanistan pose more of a threat to any Christians living there.

By the way, do you usually find yourself thinking about the size of men's test.icl.es? That is what you were referring to, right?

His generals advised him to do it. Do you think it's sad to have a Commander in Chief who listens to the soldiers on the ground fighting this war?

I love what this country is becoming. Things are getting better and better for me. If you don't like the direction that things are headed toward, you can keep on griping, but it won't change a thing.

Another war? Congress better bring back the draft. Our troops have had enough, they are tired and have been fighting far too long as it is. New blood is needed in the military and the draft will ensure the ranks are filled quickly. Of course, that would mean that some wealthy kids will be called up and we can't have that. No, the fighting needs to done by kids who join the military to escape the reality of joblessness and lack of educational opportunities at home.

It's just a no win situation. Lets go with staying out of wars. We have a country that needs to be fixed.
06:42 AM on 03/07/2012
I'm for that. I've got a 27 y-o son; 25 y-o daughter. I wouldn't want either of them to go to war.
09:34 AM on 03/07/2012
I don't want my kids going to war and maybe dying or wounded for lies or some other country. Ron Paul has it right no foreign aid and we are not the policemen of the world.Esienhower said beware of the industrial military. When we are paying billions to companies like Blackwater and Halliburton it says he had it right also.
09:30 PM on 03/07/2012
True. The military-industrial complex today controls much of our foreign policy. Enough is enough. How can we afford more war when people in our country are going hungry, kids are being denied a decent public education and homelessness is rampant?

One sign from history that a new war may be on the horizon is the Dow taking a plunge as investors "in the know" abandon ship. I hope I'm wrong, we do not need another war.

Your a idot. It sounds like all your interested in a war and not trying to keep peace. We have enough going on right here in the U.S. We're just coming out of a Bush war where we shouldn't have been. We need to focus on the U.S., God knows we have enough tention with our own clowns here, and I can see your one of them!
04:17 AM on 03/07/2012
It's "you're" an idiot. If you are going to respond to a post, please use proper English. Netanyahu has the responsiblity of protecting his country. He is a good leader. Obama is a poor leader. He does nothing to protect his country.
05:51 AM on 03/07/2012
Your right, he is a man of character and integrity. Netanyahu for President.

Tensions with only IRAN? Let's get real, how about saying more in lieu of tensions with the entire Middle East to even Fascist (yet A.. backward cult like religions) here in our own country: USA. Who as seeing themselves as being superiors toward everyone else how they have done nothing, but hurt this country and people lives in diverse ways to also have led many lives to digress. Those who are labeled to also known as NARROW MINDED are exactly this; NARROW MINDED meaning, no intellectual growth, no creative growth, no being fair among the wide and the narrow that is just as alive and well on their side; the RAMS when it comes to the discussion and show of SIN/Corruption in the LIGHT of God's presence...some of our Superiors, IMO, should be BURNED at the stake as they have accomplished with Joan of Arc...

Comparing and contrasting fiscal and monetary issues between the US and the Roman empire is not new . . . though it really becomes a bit creepy or forboding when noticing that faux Roman columns were erected at the Denver, CO arena when Obama presented his presidential acceptance speech . . . And, now there are prominant faux Roman columns appearing in the White House press room.

A sign of the times? The collapse of the American empire. . . . while Obama sings the blues.

If you're just starting to notice Roman columns being used, you haven't been paying any attention for how ever many decades you've been alive.

in the end all america cares about is oil not iran or israel
04:26 AM on 03/07/2012
On a practical level, you can't blame America for wanting to use other countries oil up before they use their own.

International politics is an obscure, dangerous game. Whatever the public can see or hear going on, is probably misinterpreted. This is intentional. The fact is, you don't know what's going on, and your leaders want it that way, no matter what party they're from. Since "diplomacy is warfare carried out by other means", perhaps you should read Sun Tzu's Art of War. It's all there in international politics. Deception, misdirection, disinformation, all of it. For instance, someone reported that Osama Bin Laden had diabetes. We started making some decisions based on that, searching for insulin sources, etc. It was a lie. Many things go on behind the scenes, and our leaders are doing the best they can for us, BUT it's best if we don't know what's going on. It would only make the job more difficult, and lives are at stake.

I see all of these comments about wanting to got o war with Iran.Does any one of you know that Russia, china and pakistan all said they will defend Iran? all three countries have nukes already. So you guys want nuclear war? More people killed, maybe millions, maybe right here in the states? Because Israel wants war and maybe perhaps the is a possibility that Iran might make a bomb? think about that just a moment, nuclear war with three countries under the pretense of saving israel from a maybe a future bomb.that is idiotic as it can be.
03:23 AM on 03/07/2012
nah - it's worth it. I say go for it. Balls to the wall.
02:44 PM on 03/07/2012
so, if our country and many others get turned into giant parking lots of glass and everyone you have ever known is dead this is just fine with you as long as israel wants it? I have a better idea, maybe everyone that wants war with iran should sign up in the army of israel and go for an attack without support from the usa.idk about other people but my kids and grand kids mean a heck of a lot more to me than israel ever will.
06:07 AM on 03/07/2012
This is not new news, in the Bible in Revelations it talks about how we will not be a power in the end times, but Israel, Russia and China will be and Israel wins. It even talks about a nuclear war, so it's comming. The things written are happening now and at an even faster speed because of technology. Read also Mattew 24.
02:48 PM on 03/07/2012
i believe that those things are what could be,not what will be.if we break off support to israel in this senseless push for war, they will be less likely to try anything that would potentially get millions killed. If they act on their own then let them pay the piper alone.iran has NEVER attacked another country first, look at the history of israel and see if you can say the same thing.they love war and want more power.
02:37 AM on 03/07/2012
i have a feeling israel wont wait for the us presidential elections before taking out irans nuclear capabilities. be interesting to see how our president and presidential hopefulls will respond. we will definitely need a strong and courageous leader to fend off the attacks surely coming americas way afterwards. i dont have much faith in our president or hopefulls to do what would have to be done. but we better make damn sure we have israels back in the coming conflict. megido i think its called

We have a strong courageous leader, it's too bad you can not see that. His forerign policy transcends the past few presidents and our international relationships have never been better.
06:13 AM on 03/07/2012
Yes, this is all foretold in Revelations and we will not be a power in the end times, Israel, China and Russia will. At medigo the bible say the valley of Medigo which is the size of 3 football fields, will have blood up to the horses bridels. That's how many will die. Well imagine China with 200 million soldiers it already has.
