Roy Blunt Booed, Called 'Devil'

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) raised eyebrows Monday evening when he was unceremoniously booed during an appearance at the Kennedy Center's D.C. CAP-ital Stars Gala.

Blunt, the author of a controversial amendment that would have allowed employers to refuse to pay for birth control coverage and other health services, was appearing at the Kennedy Center to receive an honor for his service to education. Then a member of the audience lashed out, according to a report from The Washington Examiner:

While Blunt was being introduced, an audience member shouted, "Blunt is the devil." A tense moment passed without comment before the ceremony continued. As Blunt took the stage, the heckler loudly booed.

Blunt drew headlines last week when the Senate voted 51 to 48 to kill his amendment, which would have nullified a provision in President Barack Obama's new contraception rule enabling employers to opt out of covering any health care services on "moral grounds."

Blunt, who has suggested requiring employers to cover health services they oppose constitutes an attack on religious freedom, did not acknowledge the boos.
