'SOLIPSIST,' Andrew Huang's Experimental Film, Explores Mind Boggling Theory (VIDEO)

It's amazing what a little light, dust, CGI and philosophy can do. Andrew Huang uses these tricks to build a technicolor dreamworld in his experimental short "SOLIPSIST."

Solipsism is, in incredibly simplified terms, a philosophical theory that one can only be sure of their own mind's existence. The short film's plot is on point with this convoluted theory; a meta mind boggler, with intriguing and seemingly beautiful aspects.

"The isolation of this theory inspired me to imagine a counter-hypothesis – a world in which living beings are not constrained by a singular experience," Huang wrote on his Kickstarter page for the project. "Rather, the characters in this film are constantly merging into one another, forming a collective consciousness through unison of their minds and bodies."

"SOLIPIST" uses a three-story plot of feather-clad dancers, underwater puppet creatures and men disintegrating into sand to piece together this theoretical, visual and audio experience.

Huang is an experimental film maker and commercial and music video director. The Loas Angeles-based artist has garnered a lot of attention for his work, most recently winning the Special Jury Prize for Experimental Short at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival.

Just guessing, but the sand appears to represent the basic elements of our being. I guess it is not coincidental that the sand was of various colors and physicists describe subatomic properties in color terms, albeit not color in the sense we commonly know. The water puppets coming together and forming a singular entity, driven by the flashing light, actually reminded me of lightning bugs. I've seen them communicate in such a fashion. All in all, the video provides much symbolism, and is very interesting.

Although the imagery is vivd, and beautiful in a way, Huang's short is a colorful take on the movie "The Matrix". I perceived Chinese dragons and DNA strands being engulfed by an enormous jellyfish. The thought of a collective or collective thought is frightening to me. I prefer to think in terms of collective goals or ideas, where individuals freely come together with thoughts to pursue a mutual purpose, as opposed to being stuck in a quagmire because we exist.
