Hawaii Weather: Governor Declares Disaster For Kauai And Oahu After Flooding

Posted: 03/ 6/2012 11:37 pm

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii's governor declared a disaster for two islands on Tuesday after three days of relentless rains caused flooding and a sewage spill on Kauai, where officials were dealing with tree-blocked roads, closed schools and dangerous surf.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie's declaration includes Oahu, where Honolulu is located. A brown water advisory was issued on the island after two manholes overflowed and wastewater flowed into the ocean. There were also warnings of possible hail, lightning, rockslides and water-clogged roads.

Kauai schoolchildren were kept home Tuesday. A middle school was functioning as an emergency shelter, where 33 people spent the night Monday. The Hawaii chapter of the Red Cross said more than 50 others spent the night at three other shelters.

State workers in Honolulu on Tuesday continued to remove floating trash from the debris trap at the entrance to the Ala Wai small boat harbor. Cleanup began Monday after the weekend rains washed large amounts of trash into the Ala Wai canal.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Kauai, Niihau and Oahu, as well as the islands of Lanai, Maui and Molokai.

A high surf warning was also in effect for the east shores of most islands in the archipelago. Forecasters said showers were likely for Wednesday with wind gusts as high as 24 mph.

Honolulu plans to temporarily close Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve on Wednesday because of the heavy rains and surface runoff.

Abercrombie's declaration allows for the activation of civil defense and other emergency functions, if necessary. It comes after Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. signed a disaster declaration on Monday.

Last time I was in Hawaii I was on Kauai and LOVED it. But, climate change means everybody.

Sunny but windy now after 3 days of rain. The lightening was so close that the last two nights I had to unplug the computer to protect it.

Thunderstorms are pretty scary there -- scarier than anything I ever saw in the Midwest growing up. Previous thunder storm in Honolulu, I was sleeping in my daughter's living room, 23rd floor, floor to ceiling windows. (I split my time between there and Calif). In the middle of the night I scrambled to her room and crawled in bed with her. She said this week's storm was even worse! Hard to imagine. Glad I missed this one.

It is scary, especially when you are up in the air. Today it was sunny and windy.

My heart goes out to my friends in Hawaii. I was on Kauai a few months ago, up on the north side, where I'd guess the fallen trees are...so beautiful there. Very sad. Aloha.

No worries. Kauai people are tough. It was bad but it wasn't that bad. There was a lot of water but being the rainiest island on earth things like this happen. We have flash floods every year. The wind, yep there was wind but 50 miles an hour is not that ferocious. Kauai does sometimes get hit by hurricanes.140 mph winds that is bad Kauai people are tough. We are survivors. It was far from a knock out punch.

It is cold however. A freezing 60 degrees. I had to put on shoes today.

I always wonder when we're in Hanalei Surf Shop when anyone ever needs sweatshirts and actual long pants! Glad you're ok!
