Joe The Plumber Wins: Samuel Wurzelbacher Defeats Steve Kraus In Ohio Congressional Race

By JULIE CARR SMYTH   03/06/12 11:46 PM ET  AP

Samuel Wurzelbacher gained the nickname "Joe the Plumber" for expressing working-class concerns about taxes to then-candidate Barack Obama during a stop to the region.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio plumber thrust into national politics during the 2008 presidential campaign has won the Republican nomination in his home state as he makes a bid for Congress.

Samuel Wurzelbacher gained the nickname "Joe the Plumber" for expressing working-class concerns about taxes to then-candidate Barack Obama during a stop to the region.

The Toledo-area plumber defeated Steve Kraus, a Sandusky real estate agent, early Wednesday to grab the GOP nomination in Ohio's 9th Congressional District.

He faces an uphill climb in the fall against veteran U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who won the Democratic primary. The newly drawn district snaking along the Lake Erie shoreline from Toledo to Cleveland tilts toward Democrats.

this is depressing. all this corporate money buying all these ads for these corporate conservative puppets. Obama had better shine a light on the house of representatives over the next 2 years so we can get these wackjobs out of government. it saddens me dearly to know how dumb the average American has become. I hate saying that, but it's true.

This is so sad. This guy offers nothing, except bad attitude. That is not who we need in government, regardless of party. It is sad that the Republican Party leadership continues to marginalize itself by encouraging extremists such as this, who lack in even basic knowledge in governance, and have nothing but scorn for the supporting structure of the country they supposedly love. This guy's message is about tearing down - not making things better.

One day Fox News, Karl Rove, the Koch Bros, etc., may wake up and regret the America they are making by encouraging this destructive nonsense. Unless, of course, they only care about sucking the money out of this country, and then moving on to greener pastures.

I feel like I'm living in the future world of "Harrison Bergeron" where everyone is intellectually handicapped. Are we just being punked or what?

This guy's extemporaneous speaking skills are as bad as Rick Perry's. Lawrence O'Donnell attempted to interview him last night and the guy gave answers about as clear and concise as his idol, Sarah (which is to say, he danced around any facts). He likes Herman Cain's "9-9-9" plan because -- well, that's inexplicable even by "Joe."

Republicans are our more simple friends: less taxes, more Jesus, and all the rest will solve itself.
