Woman Commits Suicide By Jumping Off George Washington Bridge

An unidentified woman committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge around 2PM on Wednesday, The New York Daily News reports.

Port Authority officials say police and firefighters found the woman more than a mile downstream from the bridge. Authorities added that the woman jumped from the New Jersey side of the bridge.

Earlier this year, police launched an investigation of a possible jumper from the George Washington Bridge, after a bicyclist discovered an abandoned set of keys, iPad, and a pair of shoes on the upper level walkway.

The bridge, which connects Manhattan to Northern New Jersey, was the site of the tragic death of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who in 2010, jumped from the bridge after his roommate allegedly bullied and spied on Clementi having a sexual encounter with another male in his dorm room.

Roommate Dharun Ravi is currently on trial for 15 criminal counts including invasion of privacy and bias intimidation, which is a hate crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Since Clementi's death, Port Authority officials have investigated new techniques to prevent suicidal individuals from jumping off the bridge.
