Caffeine More Likely To Disrupt Sleep In Morning People, Study Finds

Caffeine Sleep Morning People

Are you a morning person?

Then that cup of coffee during the day is more likely to mess with your sleep, according to a new study first reported by MyHealthNewsDaily.

Researchers from Stanford University examined the caffeine consumption and sleep patterns of 50 college students (they wore wrist monitors so that the researchers would know when they were experiencing a period of wakefulness during sleep), MyHealthNewsDaily reported.

The researchers found that after consuming caffeine during the day, the late sleepers were less likely to have disrupted sleep than the people who woke up early, according to MyHealthNewsDaily.

According to ABC News, a recent round-up of the research on caffeine in The Cochrane Library showed that the stimulant largely helps to improve memory and performance, and can even help people concentrate better.

However, Dr. Donna Arand, clinical director of the Kettering Sleep Disorder Center, told ABC News that there is evidence that caffeine can affect how long it takes you to fall asleep.

Recently, we reported on a new smartphone app called "Caffeine Zone," which can help people figure out when they should stop drinking their caffeine-source-of-choice in order to get a good night's rest.

"Many people don't understand how caffeine levels in their bloodstream go up and how they go down," Frank Ritter, a professor at Penn State University, said in a statement. "It's important to understand the effect that caffeine can have at these various levels."

I gave up drinking coffee with caffeine in it. I go to bed early enough that I don't get tired during the day.

I am a complete morning/day person but I stop ALL caffeine intake by noon or at the latest 1 pm... That way I KNOW that I will be able to sleep at night.

My wife can drink coffee during the day, and take a cup to bed with her while she reads a book a little before sleep. She falls asleep, and is refreshed in the morning. I'm just the opposite. If I need to go to bed at a normal time, I need to lay off the coffee around 6 PM. I have alot of friends in chatrooms here on AOL that drink coffee, then go to bed.

I give up coffee when I have a bad cold or a flu. I'm going to feel like the Dickens anyway. might as
well give up the diuretic as well. Then I sneak back and catch a caffeine habit. Yes, drink coffee after 3pm and I'll be doing math problems in my head at 2 AM. Caffeine is addictive and a gateway drug. And in America coffee is the delivery system.

It becomes an ongoing circle. You can't fall asleep until 3am so you barely wake up at 8, are late to work, and have to drink 2 cups to be productive. So you figure if you take a sleeping pill tonight you'll be asleep by 11 and be fresh in the morning. But that is never the case - you're just as sleepy at 8am and even more lethargic. So you drink 3 cups of coffee the following day...
