Google on March 8 transformed its homepage logo into a brightly colored doodle celebrating International Women's Day 2012.

March is Women's History Month, and according to the website for International Women's Day, this yearly day of awareness was started in the early 1900s by working women.

The National Post reports that while the meaning behind the day has changed over time, the underlying premise remains the same: "women deserve the same rights and opportunities as men" -- an idea that may seem like common sense, but which continues to be challenged around the world.

To honor the holiday, Google created a simple, colorful doodle which transforms the "G" into a female gender symbol, the second "O" into a yellow flower and replaces the logo's regular blue with purple.

The Washington Post reports that that according to the U.N., the overarching theme of the holiday, which is being honored in over 250 official celebrations in the U.S. alone, is "Empower Rural Women -- End Hunger and Poverty."

According to the International Women's Day website, the slogan is "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures," and the European Parliament voted for "Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value." Mashable reports that traditionally men give flowers to women on this day.

Whichever slogan or celebration style you choose, it's a good day to remember that even though women have come a long way, baby -- they've only been voting in the U.S. for less than 100 years -- there is still much to be done.
