Sandra Fluke Cartoon Creates Controversy Of Its Own (PHOTO)

Sandra Fluke Cartoon

With advertisers fleeing and public outcry refusing to die down, Rush Limbaugh might feel like he doesn't have a friend in the world.

But conservative cartoonist Gary McCoy seems to side with Limbaugh in a new cartoon showing Sandra Fluke as an overweight hypocrite looking for a government handout.

The cartoon below shows Fluke's character holding a pro-choice sign and saying, "stay out of my uterus government." In the next panel, she says, "After paying for my birth control."

As she says this, Fluke's character writes, "for a good time call ... " on a bathroom door.

The New York Daily News notes that the cartoon repeats the inaccurate claim that Fluke wants the government to pay for her birth control. Fluke is actually calling for her university's private insurance to cover the cost of the drug.

An MSNBC commenter summed up their reaction to the cartoon thusly, "Cartoonist made 'pro choice' women appear: fat, ugly, bitchy, slutty, selfish, and obnoxious. Whatever political point Cartoonist intended to make here has been caught up in his generalized portrayal of pro choice women.”

McCoy's drawing isn't the only pro-Limbaugh cartoon. The New Civil Rights Movement found this cartoon by Mike Lester that seems to depict President Obama as Fluke's pimp.

See McCoy's questionable cartoon below:

rush, and we all know this to be true, enjoys his viagra. paid for by his insurance company. why is this true? because insurance companies do pay for viagra and rush is not one to pass up a freebee. he was also caught leaving the country for the dominican republic with boxes of viagra in his luggage. so we know he uses them.

assertive women have always frightened the gotpers. they have nightmares of women getting equal pay. women getting equal pay just eliminates one more method of divide and conquer class warfare of the rich against the working class.

For ovarian cysts, birth control is an "off-label" medication. There are pills with similar chemical compositions (or identical) that are just as effective and are labeled for that. Those treatments are covered in any insurance plan. I empathize completely with people who have ovarian cysts, but my empathy stops when people start lying about the inability to find treatment because insurance does not cover it. A simple insurance-covered sonogram at a doctor that writes a prescription is enough. Besides the fact that $15 is not much to pay, there are subsidies already in place affecting even private insurance companies.

I agree, though, that it's kind of stupid to attack the appearance of a person who, at best, is misled about an issue. Sandra Fluke doesn't appear to be a person who wants to cause harm. Attacking her doesn't change anyone's opinion. Presenting viable and valuable arguments like what I presented above is much more effective. And if it isn't, I don't cry myself to sleep. There are going to be people against my opinion, but that doesn't mean I can't have a meaningful and productive dialogue with them.

Fight facts with facts. Any attempt to attack someone's appearance is very low, uncivilized, and just childish.

That cartoon - was it done by Rush? It certainly reflects Russ' point of view and shows how faulty it is - Sandra Fluke is in all actuality a very pretty young woman who speaks completely reasonably.

Heaven forbid .... the last place on earth I want to be is in Sandra Fluke's uterus.

I'd like Ms. Fluke to show a bit of recriprocal respect and keep her hands out of my pocketbook.

I am starting to feel like a broken record, but I will attempt to explain this one final time. Please pay attention.

Ms. Fluke and her (many) supporters are NOT suggesting that anyone should be allowed to put their "hands" in your "pocketbook". They are advocating PRIVATE INSURANCE coverage of oral contraceptives. Private insurance is not, not, NOT taxpayer funded. This issue literally has NOTHING to do with you.

On the other hand, all publicly-funded (THAT means tax dollars) insurance plans -- Medicaid, Medicare (part D) and TriCare -- ALREADY cover birth control. The patient pays a small copay (TriCare, most Medicare part D plans) or NO copay at all (Medicaid).

Do you know why this is? Because paying for the birth of a baby, and for all that baby's doctor visits and shots, etc., is MUCH more expensive that a supply of birth control every month. It SAVES taxpayer dollars by PREVENTING babies from being born.

Which part of this don't you like? The "saving-money-by-preventing-pregnancies" part?
10:45 AM on 03/14/2012
Duh???? Someone has to pay for it. If Ms. Fluke doesn't pay for it someone else does. It's not without cost. Even when Obama forces insurance companies to provide it without extra cost to the individual it's not free, someone else is paying for it and the cost is reflected elsewhere ... higher tuitions, higher prices, higher premiums, higher, taxes, bigger deficits ... somewhere the cost is being absorbed.

IF Ms. Fluke and Obama insists that private insurance MUST cover the cost then the cost of the premiums whould have to be higher and Ms. Fluke and Presiednt Obama have their hands in every policy holders pocketbooks. It's 7th grade mathematics. The cost of the whole has to be equal to the cost of all the parts.

Regarding the cost of having a baby ..... this has to be the most shallow argument possible. MOST people are worth far more than what the taxpayers pay for them. Most people live productive lives that contribute much, much more than the government has to pay for them. They grow up to pay their own maintenance and their own upkeep, and pay taxs that pay for the less fortunate.

You know, I think that's the big difference between liberals and conservatives. You guys think of people as burdens on society. I see them as assets that will enrich society.

I do not like that you simply refuse to understand that if you mandate that private insurers must pay for BC that it will raise the rates for all of us, and some, based on religious conviction, have yet another objection. Do YOU understand how insurance works?
We have already acccepted the responsibility to cover these services for the less fortunate in our midst through the publically funded programs you mentioned plus Planned Parenhood. Why pray tell would I agree to pay for it for women who work ,attend college and have the means to pay for it themselves I am already paying $660 more a year for last years Obama care mandates ,new infant and 26 year old coverages. All the while my own 20 somethings have finished college and are working. Not at their dream jobs mind you,but working and paying their own insurance.
Private and public insurance already pays for medically necessary care, which means Ms Fluke was talking down to all of us by her exhibit of her lesbian friend who was unable to get coverage for her medical problems. If she had insurance ,she had coverage. Now if she did not know she needed to have a medical diagnosis ,then the question begs to be answered ,what is she doing at Georgetown?

It is a false assumption that birth control is prescribed only for sexual active women. The truth is that birth control is prescribed for many hormonal issues in women. So until it is ONLY about preventing babies or to have untold amounts of casual sex, it has to be treated as more than just that....

many RARE issues with women. Don't muddy the water with only half or little bits of fact.
11:06 AM on 03/14/2012
If it was prescribed for health issues then I imagine it would be covered like any other prescription medicine, depending whether the policy covered prescription drugs. if prescription medicines aren't covered, it would be the responsibiity of the individual, like other prescription medicines.

I think the issue is that Obama wants to FORCE health insurance policies to pay for birth control pills. Most non-liberals think that's a big intrusion by the government. When religious employers or institutions are involved, such government intrusion is seen as an attempt by the government to trump the 1st Ammendment. It's kinda like te government forcing a business to open on Saturday or Sunday when doing so is against the owner's religious beliefs. Or forcing a Hebrew school to serve ham sandwiches for lunch, regardless of the school's kosher policies.

I'm not Jewish but I respect Jewish institutions rights to determine their own dietary policies. I'm not even a good Catholic since I don't have serious objections to birth control or abortion. But I respect Catholic institutions rights to determine their own policies regarding birth control or abortion.

I agree that the government should stay away from reproductive issues, and keep their hands out of our pocketbooks, and respect our rights to live our religious beliefs.

The best solution to all of this would be if the government wants to provide insurance to everyone the provide it to everyone and not involve the employer at all.

Then there would be no issue about the religious beliefs of the employer at all, and the government can remain a religiously neutral party in the matter.
