Food Of 'The Hunger Games' (RECIPES)

First Posted: 03/08/2012 3:58 pm   Updated: 08/31/2012 10:48 am

With "The Hunger Games" movie out, what better time than now to relive the trilogy? And what better way to relive it than with our taste buds? The name alone makes it clear that food, or sometimes the absence of food, is an important theme in the books. It could be one of the reasons there's already a cookbook written in its honor, The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook.

And while the cookbook covers dishes that correlate with each and every mention of food, we at Kitchen Daily decided to highlight our favorite food-related scenes. From Katniss' favorite dish of lamb stew to Mr. Mellark's cookies to the lamb chops that Peeta and Katniss ate on their first trip to the Capital, you can cook -- and eat -- your way through the whole story.

What's your favorite Hunger Games recipe? Leave a comment below!

When they were younger, Peeta gives Katniss hearty loaves of bread with raisins and nuts, which have been slightly burned. Katniss is almost in disbelief that such good loaves would be given to her. She hurries home with them and eats a whole loaf with her mother and sister. With this hearty bread recipe, you'll want to eat the whole loaf in one sitting too.

I found a cool HG fan site that basically pulled together the best of all the HG sites on the web and has a ton of fun HG top 10 lists. they also had some fun quizes and polls and things like best HG quotes and HG names true fans give their babies, plus they are giving away 100 bucks for the best fan art, might want to take a look

Only in our society right now would the most widely read dystopian books inspire "recipes". Herbert, Dick, Orwell, Heinlein, etc, are all having a good belly laugh clinking drinks right now saying "told you so".

I love to cook and to read. Books that include food as part of the "universe" attract me even more because food is part of everyone's life. This series approaches food from an unusual angle, but I was encouraged to read the rich descriptions of foodstuffs and dishes in the story. Anything that will get readers- especially young adults, who are a primary audience for the series- more interested in food as a cultural element is worthwhile. Katniss and everyone outside Capitol have a very close relationship with the food they have: they grew it, hunted it, gathered it and savored it. The current movement to draw people closer to their food sources is supported by this book.

Too bad you missed the entire point behind the book, society falling back into the dark ages.

is it cuz of the whole cuddly lamb/out of the ordinary? or taste. it is usually the first one with most people until they try really good lamb.

Making the shortbread today because I have the ingredients on hand - good stuff. Can't wait to try the seeded multi-grain boule but that will have to wait 'til I get to the market. It sounds fantastic!
