Two-Year-Old Throws Tantrum And Gets Kicked Off JetBlue Flight

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/ 9/2012 1:35 pm Updated: 03/12/2012 12:16 pm

If you don't comply with crew-member instructions, you're likely to get kicked off a plane. And if you're 2 years old, you're no exception to the rule.

Toddler Natalie threw a tantrum when her family boarded a JetBlue flight traveling from Turks and Caicos to Boston. According to NBC News, her parents tried to calm her down but were unsuccessful at first. Eventually, they got both Natalie and her 3-year-old sister, Cecilia, seated with their seat belts fastened -- the family was asked to leave the plane anyway.

NBC reports that the captain didn't feel safe taking off with the Vieau family still on board.

In a statement, the airline said:

"Flight 850 ... had customers that did not comply with crewmember instructions for a prolonged time period. The Captain elected to remove the customers involved for the safety of all customers and crewmembers on board."

But Dr. Colette Vieau said she and her husband did what they were told to do -- they were just struggling to keep their children calm. Vieau suggested putting her daughter on her lap, but federal regulations only allow this accommodation for children under 2 -- Natalie had just celebrated her second birthday.

The family had to spend an additional $2,000 to find a hotel and rebook their flights, since there were no other trips that night.

A similar altercation took place in 2007, when Kate Penland's son, Garron, repeated the phrase "bye-bye, plane" during the flight attendant's safety speech on a flight from Atlanta to Oklahoma City. Penland said the plane was returned to the gate and she and her son were asked to get off when she refused to give her son Benadryl.

To avoid toddler-on-plane disasters, a new on-flight babysitting service, "Nanny In The Clouds", is available to parents. The website pairs families with nannies (passengers who already have a ticket for the same destination) to help the process, from security to landing, run smoothly.

It is just about time that parents of 2 year olds learn that they should not push the normal bad behavior of young children off onto others.. Stay at home or travel in your own car. Don't expect the rest of the population to adore the loud and annoying behavior of your offspring

God bless Jet Blue, they truly are one of the best airlines for having the balls to kick those annoying kids of the plane along with their entitlement complex parents. There are times flying when I wish flight attendants would do that. The airlines has a responsibility to the 99% of their customers who don't care if a baby is bored or hungry or if it's "natural". They just want to get to their destination in relative peace not standing in the aisles covering their ears because your kids cant stop shrieking (true story).

$2,000 is pretty inconvenient. I've heard that flying coach is nothing but screaming children running carefree up & down the isles, so it comes as a surprise to me.

plain and simple: children under 4 have no business being on a plane. it's disruptive for the other passengers and prolly not too healthy for the kids either (canned air, increased radiation exposure, stress, etc.) i can't tell you how many times, after dropping over a thousand dollars for a ticket, of being trapped in a 14 hour screaming, diapered hell.

Bollocks.
I travelled from Auckland to LA (13 hours) and my heart sank as I saw a family with a baby and a toddler come on board. Lovely surprise -- they changed the kids into their jammies, there was a fold-out bassinet for the baby who immediately went to sleep, and the little on slept in the seat, I guess. They were better behaved than a lot of adults who have to spend that much time on a plane.
But also, realistically, a toddler having a meltdown is going to stop after a few minutes. They're not going to fuss for HOURS unless they are sick.

Oh no.. i hate to defend anyone here, but... I've been on several flights where the meltdowns just DID NOT STOP. Once, a toddler was screaming and acting out so badly, even hitting and kicking his mother repeatedly, that I saw several people complain to flight attendants throughout the flight. The attendants went over to the parents several times to try to appease the child to no avail. The gentleman in the seat next to me started cursing to himself under his breath and clutching his head, I was truly scared he was going to lose it. So yes, i realize these are rare cases, and yes maybe these children have some kind of mental or physical condition to consider, but I do see how they can be too disruptive.

As a military spouse, what are we supposed to do with our kids, then? Drive to HI when we get stationed here? Screw off.

The idea that it's fine for a 1.99 year old to sit on your lap but not a 2.0 year old is ludicrous. If it would have calmed her down, allowing her to be held by one of her parents should have been allowed. Since I started flying 20 years ago, airline personnel have gotten progressively more authoritative and uncompromising to the point of ridiculous.

ugh why could this never happen when i'm on a plane? i think this should be regular protocol. especially on like, 7 hour flights.
06:43 PM on 07/10/2012
These parents need to learn a thing or two from The Wicked StepMomsters! Honestly, if I threw a tantrum for a prolonged period of time guess what? They're kicking me off too, once again the Wicked StepMomster cocktail one part liquid Benadryl; two parts apple juice in sippy cup, shake and sleep.
10:06 PM on 09/05/2012
Yeah, but if you acted like a 2 year old child and threw a tantrum I would expect people to act entirely differently to how they would respond to an actual 2 year old acting their age

Is this woman for real, how bout compassion for the rest of the people on the plane?? 71% can't be all wrong
05:02 AM on 08/28/2012
here we go again another follower. agreeing with what everyone else says. plus are you deaf the video she says it about 3 to 4 times that the child was already under control
02:16 PM on 11/17/2012
How do you know she wasn't lying?
01:25 PM on 05/31/2012
If a child is being unruly and disruptive, what are you suppose to do? Ignore it? Whether you have children of your own or don't, this isn't about taking sides. This is about the safety of all passengers on that plane. And a pilot cannot be interrupted at all times while flying a plane, unless it's an emergency. They did the right thing kicking that little misbehaving snot off the plane.

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG WATCHING THOSE KIDS WERE ...HELLFIRES FOR SURE
I WOULD HAVE KICKED THEM OFF TOO.
11:13 AM on 05/10/2012
Haha. Do any of the people making comments below even have children? Every responsible parent does their best to teach their child how to behave in public. Sometimes they do a great job. Other times its a disaster. But you can't predict when they will freak out...cause they are...children.

I'd like to call all of your moms and see if you were a perfect child every time you left the house.
02:44 PM on 05/31/2012
My child was not perfect all the time when we left the house, but, I sure as hell do not want to sit on a plane for hours with a screaming or crying child, today's kids are getting worse because you're not supposed to disipline kids anymore.

Not every screaming or crying child on a plane is "throwing a fit". Many of them are in pain due to the fact that the pressure is too intense for their ears. This is especially true for babies. People have known since the 1960s that babies should be sucking on something during take off in order to ease the pressure. I don't think that modern moms are all aware of this.
02:20 PM on 11/17/2012
Did you watch the video? They couldn't even control those kids on the show. Those parents have no idea what they are doing and should wait 5 more years to sit on a plane with other people.
01:47 PM on 05/07/2012
Who the hell takes their toddlers on a Caribbean vacation? HELLO?? Whatever happened to grandma's house?
04:34 AM on 08/28/2012
they are doing what they are supposed to do, taking care of them is their responsibility not the grandmas. anyone who does that is a spoiled brat themselves. they dont run away from a challange., like most people do today. people today are very weak phisically and mentally.
01:44 PM on 04/05/2012
Whys shoold others have to put up with screaming unruly tantrum throwng little brats For Who and For What? I work hard to have myself a enjoyable and I get tired of parents who have bowls of stupid for breakfast who think its all kinds of carte blanche To let thier little brats run rampart

You don't think parents who now have two jobs--their profession and also taking care of their kids--deserve a vacation too? Its hard taking care of kids and you can't always control them. Most people in the world have children at some point in their life. What are they supposed to do, not travel and enjoy themselves like you get to do?
05:53 PM on 05/16/2012
The parents may deserve a vacation, but they should have left their damn unruly brats at home. You can even see from the video of them on the today show that those children do NOT know how to listen. No one else should have to put up with the results of their poor parenting
09:52 AM on 05/11/2012
"bowls of stupid for breakfast"

hahahahahahaha!

Anyone that disputes the airline decision, watch the studio interview for the Today Show video. They have no control over either of them (or only temporary control which is randomly lost again) lol.

Yeah I know they are kids, but I bet if they made the kids sit seat belted in the Studio chair for 4 hours we would have seen firsthand what mayhem they are capable of. =)
04:39 AM on 08/28/2012
no one care what you think. i bet you dont have kids. And if by some chance you do i bet you are the type that just pawns off the kids with your parents or some other responsible adult or maybe not even a responsible one just as long it is not you. So typical of people like you today.
08:37 AM on 09/17/2012
Hypocrite
09:16 AM on 04/05/2012
They can't even control their children during this interview. The lack of "parenting" exhibited here shows a lot about this couple. They obviously both work full time and the children are acting out for attention that they don't get or they are used to getting their way all the time. It's a shame they don't learn a lesson from this experience (71% of people agree with the airline) and spend some more quality time with their children, not just on a vacation.
04:40 AM on 08/28/2012
I guess your a follower always agreeing with what other people have to say. "what you dont have a mind of your own?" dont hate it because its true.
