Spiders Blanket Wagga Wagga, Australia After Flooding

The Huffington Post   Posted: 03/ 9/2012 2:29 pm

Like a scene right out of "Arachnophobia," spiders have blanketed an Australian town with silk in an attempt to get to higher ground during flood season.

Intense flooding near the city of Wagga Wagga drove some 8,000 people from their homes last week, but it also sent millions of wolf spiders and their silk up trees, bushes and grassy fields, Discovery News reported.

The fleeing arachnids left a rare sight in their wake: an entire sea of silk -- and spiders -- covering local farms.

"It's all silver. It's like snow in the trees. ... It's all silk," Wagga Wagga resident Dennis Lane told ABC Sydney. "Just down the bottom of the hill from my place, the trees are covered in them. They're just all walking out of the water down the road. ... They were heading my way."

Wolf spiders, relatively harmless and common creepy-crawlies, can cast a single thread of silk to "balloon" themselves over long distances, according to Discovery News. Since millions of them cast their threads to escape the rising waters, it almost looks like they spun a giant web over the town -- but Discovery News notes that earlier reports that called them webs are inaccurate.

Wolf Spiders in the wind are just like leaves, they have no control over where they go after the wind takes them.

These spiders are brilliant as they show how life can be sometimes. They didn't choose to be there, that's just where they ended up because of things outside their control.

In many ways that is the same with humans. Many people who are in poverty, unemployed, or just are not happy with their job but it’s the only one they could get. These people didn't choice to be there, it's just where the wind took them.

Nature can teach us a lot about ourselves if we let it.

Great post, Zirnitra. "These spiders are brillant..." I was just thinking that myself this
morning. They seem to be great problem solvers. They escaped the floods by building
webs. Great little architects if you ask me. They're very resourceful and totally harmless to
humans.

So during the biblical great flood, spiders created a world wide web?

Spiders are also very beneficial. They eat all of those tiny bugs that bit us. I love all the spiders, even the Black Widow.

Spiders definitely are beneficial and do eat many of the harmful insects. I don't know
if I could say I love spiders, but there is definitely a place for spiders in this world.
Spiders are fascinating to watch, especially when they are building a web. If there were
no more spiders, I think the world would be overrun with insects. Spiders definitely help
to keep the insect population down.

In most areas, a 10 mile radious has more insects then people world wide...
That's why we call it Pest control, Pest management, not Pest elimination...
If your home is built on a slab your will have an annual insect infestation.
The home was build on all the criiters underground...
